  • The Raphael Cartoons are considered one of the greatest treasures of the Renaissance in the UK. These huge, full-scale designs for tapestries were created by Raphael - one of the most important masters of the Renaissance period. Commissioned by Pope Leo X (shortly after his election in 1513), for the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican Palace, the Cartoons depict key episodes of the lives of Saint Peter and Saint Paul.
This film reveals the complex process in designing the Cartoons and their translation into tapestries.

I saw the cartoons at V&I in 2019. Not only are they impressive to look at, the setting for them was magnificent.

I have always loved the Raphael cartoons, I would spend hours admiring them when I was young.

I've now learned two new things from this channel today. The definition of cartoon is much broader than I thought

Just saw the Dresden Tapestries at the Columbus Museum of Art and they are spectacular. I wondered about the technique and this video is a wonderful explanation by showing not only how it was done then, but how the practice is being continued today by contemporary weavers. Thanks to Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister (Old Masters Picture Gallery of Dresden), Germany for lending them to us in the US!

Such beautiful and precious works. Thank you to the V & A for this video. I miss my time as volunteer for the museum , a magnificent museum which offers so much education for all. I always believed that schools should organise frequent visits for pupils to learn and develop a properly formed interest in history and the context of that history - with gratitude and appreciation and without insolent criticism ? It is amazing that the weavers weave the back using a mirror and design for reference.I always thought they were able to work the design facing them.

It depends on the method used by a particular workshop. The Australian Tapestry Workshop weave with the front facing the Weavers. It’s well worth having a look at their videos. The loom is upright so a much more ergonomic set up.

I had the opportunity to see one of his cartoons in a very unexpected place: New Norcia, Western Australia. It is a very tiny benedictine/monastic town, with a fascinating story, and the museum holds many Renaissance and Baroque paintings in its collection, including Raphael's cartoon “Head of an Apostle” from "The descent of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost". I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw it, definitely a very beautiful surprise.
