About eight years back I was working in this up-scale Indian restaurant as a waiter in Winnipeg, where Robin WIlliams happened to be filming a movie one summer. One afternoon Robin Williams came in, no fan fare, no handlers, just him looking for a decent spicy lunch. He was seated in my section, so I had the fortune of serving him that day. He was very softspoken, he cracked jokes but it wasn't the flamboyant character you see in television interviews. When he finished he left me an awesome tip (I forget the exact amount but it had to be ~100 dollars, and I barely did anything). He'd come in a few more times over the summer and every time from what I saw, he was just a generous man, with his time and attention, he never rushed people, always signed autographs, posed for pictures with people and the staff. Just a real humble, nice guy. Anyway, that's my boring anecdote.
hey you know what, your story is awesome, and the tip? I would have been just as happy to have served Robin Williams (because let's face it Winnipeg in the 2000s we didn't have alot going for us, all we had was an occasional mention on tv shows like the Simpsons and Desperate Housewives and celebrities coming here to shoot films, I still remember when J.Lo filmed a movie here)
When I heard the news i was beginning to teach my class of students and my wife called me and told me what happened. I stopped and went to my desk sat their for a few minutes told my students what happened and put Aladdin into my classroom VCR and we watched that for the rest of class.
You sir have the correct priorities. When I heard about his passing I started to binge the movies he was in with my family starting with Ms Doubtfire and then Aladdin, to jumanji, and Patch Adams
R.I.P. Robin Williams We'll never have a friend like you..... :( I really wish Disney would release those 16 hours of Robin Williams ad libbing during Aladdin.
I actually started crying when the news sank in. It shows how much of an impact a person has had on you when you didn't know them personally and yet you feel like you've lost a friend. He was such a bright spark of energy and laughter and he will be deeply missed. My thoughts are with his family.
I also cried for a whole hour straight when i heard he died.... He was a comedic icon and a role model to me in a way. I hope wherever the afterlife takes him hes resting in peace. OH CAPTAIN MY CAPTAIN! rest in peace old friend!
Me too, for like two days. .w. Robin Williams is the first actor I've ever known of by name. I saw him in Flubber at the theater when I was 8, and since that day, I was obsessed with that movie. Looking back on it now, Flubber isn't the greatest movie I'ver ever seen, but Robin really took the character of Professor Brainard and embellished it, to the point where he really WAS the professor. He knew how to really engulf himself in a role and make his characters believable and great in each movie, and that's what I think I really liked about him the most.
Of COURSE it's tragic that people in Palestine, Africa and Ukraine are dying. But the difference between them and Robin Williams is that they didn't impact my childhood in a significant way, and Robin did. I thought that difference was already readily visible, but maybe not...
People saying he bashed him as nc, well he says there are bad movies that he's in and oh god yes there are. But his stand up is extraordinarily good and Doug always said that.
hes been in good and bad movies, but his standup is really fun to watch. that and he just seems to be a really likeable guy. its kinda hard to imagine he would off himself. i guess depression happens to anyone, even those who seem like the happiest man alive.
It's simply that even great actors can do bad movies. Robin has done amazing films and proven that he is a fantasic actor and comedian. So odds are the terrible films he's been in mostly come down to bad directing rather than bad acting. In fact in all of these terrible movies Robin WIlliams is in, you can tell he's always trying to give a good performance.
Doug, this is a fantastic tribute to a truly funny and talented person. It's a shame that somebody had to die in order for us to finally discuss the issues of depression and suicide. As somebody who has experienced both, having manic depression and suicidal thoughts now and then, I remember peers never taking it truly seriously. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad people are discussing it, but why after a man died? It's a real shame, because I look back on Robin Williams films and see how goddamn happy he was, and yet, you can't help but think he was faking it most of the time. But, let's remember Robin Williams as that amazing, funny and touching person who entertained millions.
I still find it hard to believe Robin Williams was depressed. The man oozed life everywhere he went. He was smiling, joking, being Robin Williams. It really just shows you that you really don't know what a person is going through. RIP Robin Williams
I think a lot of depressed people are like that though. They put on a happy face and make others feel better because it brings them joy through their illness. Some comedians tend to have depression, and it's even said that the funniest people are usually depressed. It's just so unfortunate that the world lost such a wonderful guy to this illness.
Many is an unspecified number. I didn't not say a majority or all, I said a lot which there are. Wayne Brady, Marc Maron, Jim Norton, John Belushi, Chris Farley, Greg Giraldo, Woody Allen, George Carlin, Richard Prior, Conan O’Brien, Ellen DeGeneres, Louis CK, Sarah Silverman, Jim Carrey, Patton Oswalt, Owen Wilson and David Letterman are all comedians/ comedic actors who have openly talked about depression, who have ADMITTED to having depression, or have been found to have the mental illness from professionals after their death. The person who commented after me mention Rodney Dangerfield as well. And those are just the names I found after only 10 minutes of looking up the subject. My comment was to the original commenter who stated that they, "never knew that Williams suffered from depression because of his personality/persona he showed the world." Just because someone doesn't seem like they are depressed, doesn't mean they are not. Depression and mental illness is still seen to this day as a taboo subject and isn't talked about enough in our society. It wasn't too long ago that people would be hospitalized for an indeterminate amount of time in insane asylums because their mental disorders were seen as a burden to society and their families. Even for mental illnesses that were not threatening/violent to the people around them. As for comedians, they have even more pressure because of how publicly they talk about their life experiences. If you have ever seen Christopher Titus, you know he talks about every single embarrassing and humiliating part of his life. For some, admitting that they have depression is something that is too personal to share. This issue of depression with comedians is common enough knowledge that the LA laugh factory offers therapy sessions twice a week for comics. Lastly, psychologists all over the world have taken note that comedy is a defense mechanism against depression. Even people who are not professional comedians, tend to do this to mask their depression. As someone who has suffered from depression and mental disorder for 14 years, I can tell you this is true with some people, including me. I’ve had friends tell me that they didn’t like me when I was depressed, so I learned to hide it. “People don’t like you when you’re sad. Sad people aren’t fun” is something that commonly said to people with mental disorder from the people in their lives. You can’t assume that these feeling of “ there’s something wrong with you, you need to hide it” aren’t felt by the comedians, like William's, who suffer from depression as well. The way the media rips people apart when they are not seen as “perfect” is proof of that alone. I don’t know you. I can’t assume that you don’t have depression or exhibit the behaviors and feelings I have stated. Because regardless of what I said, depression is different for everyone. What I do know is you are clearly not a doctor, and you don’t know much about the subject. I won’t pander to your ignorance any further or indulge you by responding again.
He's probably the only comedian that I could sit down and watch his things for several hours without getting tired of the routine. He will be sorely missed.
“Heard a joke once: Man goes to doctor. Says he's depressed. Says life seems harsh and cruel. Says he feels all alone in a threatening world where what lies ahead is vague and uncertain. Doctor says, "Treatment is simple. Great clown Pagliacci is in town tonight. Go and see him. That should pick you up." Man bursts into tears. Says, "But doctor...I am Pagliacci.”"
Robin Williams was just a man. He was an ordinary man with extraordinary talent. He was a legend and will always be a legendary comic. His gift of making people laugh using only his wits and ingenuity is comic genius. He will be missed. Long live Robin Williams.
My favorite Robin Williams moment is actually the commercial that had him and his daughter Zelda for Ocarina of Time 3D. To see how much he adored and loved his children...oh God. This just breaks my heart that such a wonderful and funny man has passed away...it's heartbreaking. :'( My heart goes out to his family friends and all my fellow fans grieving. May he find peace and love in God's arms now. :'(
So this is more of a personal story about him, and it's still my favorite. My dad used to travel a lot for work, and so he stayed in a lot of hotels. One time he was in the same hotel as Robin Williams. My dad always gets up early to go on the treadmill as a daily routine since he doesn't have much time to exercise otherwise. So, he is on the treadmill, doing his daily run, and Robin Williams walks into the room (there were a few other guys who were there doing weights or stretching or something) and Robin walks over to the treadmills. My dad nods at him, trying to be nice without bothering Mr. Williams, and Robin takes one look at my dad, and says: "Wow, you need this more than I do!" and he walks back out of the room. My dad's always been a good sport about it because seriously, it's Robin Williams. He made a joke about him. My dad felt more honored than offended and it was one of my favorite bedtime stories when I was little. "Dad, please tell us about that one time Robin Williams called you fat!" He just always seemed to want to make people smile, always making a joke wherever he went.
Doug never made fun of robin william, he did with his movies, let's face it, even the best actor in the world can't save a movie which is bad, and even the best writer can't have all the scrips right, he was awesome, and doug knows it, and himself said he was good, hook is one of his favorite movies, so, don't call him a dick, is just a person who critic movies in a funny way, there's a person inside the character. Nostalgia critic is only a character in the end, he's a different person than doug is.
Still can't believe he was so depressed to the point of committing suicide. I mean, THIS GUY. He laughs and jokes ALL THE TIME. Anyway, my personal fav role he ever did was the teacher in Dead Poet Society. And yeah, we won't have another actor/Comedian as close as Robin Williams style.
I can't believe it either, and even if I haven't seen most of his work and didn't grew up with him, it's still sad and unexpected to see such a funny person go because of depression. I guess the people who make you laugh the most do tend to feel the most depressed. :(
I think one of my favourite comments I've read in regards to meeting Robin Williams seeing a mourning family in a restaurant and he performed a small routine for them. Robin Williams was a wonderful spark of madness that I miss.
Robin Williams is one of the few actors I'm split on, when it come to my favorite thing from him. My favorite movies he was in is Hook. But My favorite Role he was cast as is Teddy Roosevelt in Night at the Museum. I may be a bit bias on that one though, considering that was the first movie I saw him in. But I Really did enjoy the enjoy the energy he brought to it.
The new 'Night at the Museum' film will break the box office when it comes out, since I think that's the last film he did before he died. I hope the movie is amazing so his last film is a great one.
I'm completely thrown back, I'm one of those kids that grew up in the 90's and looked to Robin Williams as another role model, to the point where I've learned more from him than anyone else, I'm more disappointed than anything else. I feel like there is one thing i can never accomplish now, I can never meet him in person. I can never tell him how much he meant to me, I'm still blown away. I don't know how to come back from this one.
Robin Williams has always been a huge influence for me. I also suffer from social anxiety, depression, and some other health issues. Like Robin Williams, I use humor and jokes to keep myself happy and also the people around me feeling happy. Humor can be a great tool for distracting yourself from certain illnesses but it doesn't get rid of the problems attached to the illnesses. Anyone who has 'unseen' conditions is a hero, especially people who have persevered and made it despite having those conditions. I will always respect Robin Williams for his humor, how he gave back to the people in his life, and his views on family values. He and now Leonard Nimoy will be greatly missed.
After seeing Doug rip apart Patch Adams, it's refreshing to see Doug praise Williams's comedy. RIP Robin. You brought so much emotion to Good Will Hunting, one of my favorite films.
Me and my sis were just watching Aladdin on Disney XD and in the end, they actually showed Genie looking over the world as stars. It also says in memory of Robin Williams who made us laugh. It makes me want to cry.
I didn't believe it at first... I thought it was another celebrity death hoax (cause they happen a lot of twitter and what not) but when I actually found out, I was speechless. There was a night where I couldn't stop crying because I couldn't believe he was gone :( I never knew him but he had such an impact and was such a part of our lives that hats how we feel. He was truely amazing rip
I think my favorite Robin Williams moment would have to be the end of Mrs. Doubtfire. As a boy whose mother and father divorced at an early age, it was tough for me to cope because now my life was gonna change and I blamed myself for it. But when I saw the movie and it got to the end where Mrs. Doubtfire on her show was reading the fan letter about the fan's parents divorcing and explaining different kinds of families and reassuring her that everything was going to be OK, that kind of helped me get through my parent's divorce during the process. Robin was a great comedian, but when it came time to be serious, his brilliance really shined through. Me and many others are going to miss him so much and as Doug said, there might never be another guy like him. RIP
I still remember the day I got this news. A friend of mine called me up and told me to turn on CNN. He wouldn't tell me what it was, all he said was that it was bad. I turn it on and there was a huge headline: ROBIN WILLIAMS DEAD AT 63. It was a big shock to me as Robin Williams was my favourite actor growing up. Everythime I saw a trailer to one of his movies I said to myself, "This must be good, Robin Williams is in it." Even to this day, I am still sad that he is gone. He was a wonderful man and will be missed. RIP Robin Williams, you always knew how to make us laugh.
in this age of mass media robin williams will live forever. he gave us his all , we are lucky we got to see him and he owes nothing to anyone any more. thanks to you critic for this touching tribute.
ive had depression since I was 6 years old, and it's not anything that most people who haven't had it can really understand. True a lot of comedy and entertainment is brought out of the individual, *i myself use comedy to detract this condition.* but,.....it's terrible when we lose anyone, especially to such a mysterious and or stigmatized condition. Mental Health is just generalized and not understood overall..I am sad to say that I understand and can see through it, as one who does many of the same type of personality traits one with depression usually can pull off convincingly., R,I.P Robin. You will be missed and remembered for all the laughs you gave us. And this is a beautiful tribute you have done Doug. Very well done. I like that you said you don't know enough about it to make any stand or understand depression, you kept it on Williams and that's great. Kudos
I remember that night. A whole 12+ hours not knowing that Robin killed himself. When I finally found out, they showed a gifset of him as the Genie in Aladdin with RIP Robin as the caption and I did a double take. We were in enough problems after my sister's truck got some damage in it. When my mom got done talking with one of my aunts, I told her and she screamed "NO! NOOOOOO". That was the same way she reacted when Harold Ramis died too. Then before midnight, I pulled out the Flubber cassette and I still haven't watched it again yet. Flubber was the first movie I EVER saw with Robin in it.
Robin williams movies always made me happy as a child I am only 23 but I have depression I've had it since my childhood and any time I was depressed I would watch a Robin Williams movie. I sort of saw him as a father figure. I still cry to this day that he is gone!
My childhood was destroyed when I heard about his passing. I will never forget about Robin Williams. When I always felt down in the dump I always put on a movie with him in it to cheer me up and others who felt the same way. Thank you Robin Williams for giving us laughter and smiles on our faces.
That military thing was inspiring. Few people understand how hard it really is to get the shaft for something, even when it is out of respect to something else, and Robin used it to his advantage. He up front tells everyone "I was worried that no one wanted to listen to me" in such a way, that it was hilarious. It's sad that it took the death of a great actor for a lot of people to see just how good he really was, myself included, but you know what? He lived a long full life, and it's clear that a lot of people appreciated him, and it's great to learn all of this about him now. It's just nice and inspiring. I want to go jog outside right now.
Cerith Burrows I never said he "coined" it, I said he "immortalised" it. Meaning he helped made it memorable. I know that it's a Latin term that obviously existed before, but many people are gonna think of Dead Poets Society when they hear or use it. Hell, the first time I heard the phrase was in high school in my film class when we watched a video of AFI's most memorable film quotes.
I know I'm going to sound weak but whatever. I cried myself to sleep on the night I heard he died. He was such an inspiration, and now he's gone. I still haven't gotten over it.
Robin Williams always made me smile when I thought I couldn't. I have depression and I have had serious thoughts of suicide. I remember watching youtube videos and there was one of just him sitting in a chair saying Suicide is never the answer. you matter. I held that with me for years. I was heartbroken when he took his own life. I wish I'd met him so I could have told him how much he helped me.
When I heard he died, all I said was, "Tears of a clown." Then, anger and the selfishness of how could he do that; he should've got help. Over time, I came to accept his decision to end his own life. It wasn't mine and how could I think of what he did was selfish. I'm glad that he even graced my life at all as an entertainer. He'll live in my memories AND in movies.
This man's passing really knocked me for a loop. It's crazy how much you can miss a person you never actually knew. He just touched so many lives in the time we had with him.
This made me tear up. I remember everyone I knew wanted to cry when he past away. He was a big part of so many people's lives just through television and movies. He brought so much joy and wisdom to the world. God rest Robin Williams. :'(
When I went to see a live stage show of the Robin Williams film called Mrs Doubtfire back in August of last year. The person who played Mrs Doubtfire sounded just like Robin Williams Mrs Doubtfire and when that person wasn’t Mrs Doubtfire. That person just reminded me of Jim Carrey especially Jim Carrey in the “90s” and early 2000s ❤️
We lost a great talent and a wonderful man. But I like to think about all the laughter he gave to us and all the great characters he portrayed, because I think he would want everyone to still laugh despite this tragedy. RIP Robin Williams, and thanks for all the laughs. This was a great video, Doug, very nice to hear your thoughts and memories.
When I saw the news that Monday night, it was so stormy and rainy where I live, and even though that's the kind of weather I personally adore, that was a moment where I really did associate it with sadness. Aladin, Flubber, and especially Hook were important childhood movies for me and my siblings. When I saw Dead Poets Society near the end of my senior year in high school, I fell in love with it. Robin is such an important figure in my childhood and I'll never be able to tell him that now. But thankfully, he left behind so much great work that can never be forgotten, and because of that, he will be able to keep entertaining people for ever. Rest in peace Mr. Williams, and good luck on your journey to the second star on the right.
That old man "spark of madness" bit is probably my most beloved thank you, Doug! from a fellow Robin Williams fan in Baku, Azerbaijan. You'll likely need to Google it. :) P.S. reading Dave Itzkoff's book that a friend in Vegas bought on Amazon and had it delivered to me. So stoked!!!
After i heard the news, i was in tears, not crying, just going through FB posts and a tear fall down, this never happen to me over a celebrity, i guess it's because of how much he means to me, i had this friend was sitting next to me and said, you didn't cry when your uncle died, if you wanted to cry over someone, you should do that over the people that are dying in Gaza, why do you care about one person, i said i never really knew my uncle, and it's tragic what is happening in Gaza, but i didn't feel this sad for them, maybe i'm a bad person, i don't know, but the truth is this guy, Robin Williams, was part of my life, i never met him, but i know him ever sense i was a kid, and i'm 25 years old now, i REALLY miss him, and that's coming from someone who didn't know him personally, I am really sorry for his family, and the people that DO know him. R.I.P Robin Williams.
Hey, man. You're not a bad person. Feeling bad for someone, and feeling sad over someone are two different things. Just because you don't cry over a tragedy that you had little to no personal connection to doesn't mean you don't feel bad for the victims. You're not a bad person.
You're not a bad person. If we mourned the death of every single person we would never get anything done. It's true what's going on in certain corners of the earth is tragic and shocking but ultimately there's little reason to cry over something or someone you don't have a personal connection to. Also that kind of argument is a fallacy itself unless your friend mourns all of their deaths which is highly unlikely.
I was the same exact way. This man meant so much more to me than just being a great actor and comedian. It felt like I lost a family member. I wasn't crying, I was sobbing.... for hours straight. I could not pull it together. I'm still completely heartbroken.
@Bruno Mendes There has always been preventable scenarios, circumstances and losses which could have been avoided and saved numerous amounts of resources,"life" (human or non-human),dreams,possessions,relationships(all kinds),etc....... and we should care very deeply about them as well as treat them accordingly(and properly) but you don't have to be so rude and crude about these subjects and topics! Be very wary of how you approach these matters because you might receive backlash from this measly little comment.
Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts and your moments about Robin Williams Doug. My hat is off to you and those were very kind words in your video, many thanks!
You guys aren't understanding that Doug doesn't hate Robin Williams. If you actually watch his reviews he says that Robin is a great actor but he just has plenty of bad movies. Doug's a critic, it's his job to bash and poke fun at cinema. It doesn't mean he hates the actors involved.
About two week before the news hit, me and a handful of friends were in my parents vacation house, enjoying the last bit of our break before it was back to school. Me and one of my friends were starting a new education, so we were both nervous and excited. On one of the last days there, while it was really grey and rainy, we decided to watch movies that some in the group hadn’t seen before. As an example, I had never seen ‘My Neighbor Totoro’ so we watched that. Another movie we watched was Hooked and Jumanji. We all gushed over Robin and how much impact he had on our childhood, our slowly approaching adulthood, our humor, everything. We just all loved him. Once the vacation was over, I stayed with the friend that was starting the same education. First week passes, we catch a cold at the same time, and call in sick. I got up early that morning, went to the living room with my blanket wrapped around me, and sat by my laptop to just make the time pass until my friend got up. And there is was. News I didn’t know I had dreaded. I sat for maybe 15 minutes just finding more and more articles, as I desperately tried to find proof that it was just a hoax. But it wasn’t. I was stunned. My friend joins, sleepily saying good morning as he opens the door to the garden to let the dog out, clearly not seeing the tears in my eyes. I quietly say “Robin Williams is dead” My friend pauses and looks at me, confused and a little worried, like he hoped I was joking. I just give him a sad smile “He’s dead” We spend an hour in almost complete silence, just sitting there, letting the news hit us. It was like losing an uncle, a favourite teacher, a family friend. For two weeks we would talk about this, about him. That’s how much he meant to people. That’s the kinda impact this man had on thousands of people world wide. And I don’t think he knew that, but I hope he did, because he deserves to know. And I hope that spark of madness went with him once he left, because out of all of us, it sure would be a shame if he lost it, because it made so many people appreciate their own, little spark.
First off all thank you for putting adverts on the video like some other people have done for thier Robbin Williams' tribute videos. Secondly thank you Doug for this touching tribute to a truly gifted person, And I think I speak for a lot of people when I say if we had half of the talent that Robin Williams had we'd all be extremely happy
Robin Williams was a large part of my childhood and always made me laugh. You're really spot on about his unique comedy. Was just watching Mork & Mindy. BRILLIANT. Also, I love your critiques on movies and shows, and can see that you and those you work with have great passion for what you do. Clever and entertaining. Thank you!
Mrs. Doubtfire helped me get through a tough childhood with my parents marriage falling apart, not just that but Aladdin, Jumunji and all those movies were the greatest escapes ever. Thank you Robin, you came into my life and stayed apart of me forever, i could never repay you for the joy you brought to me and my brothers. RIP Robin Williams. They'll never be another one like you.
Robin was my hero. My inspiration and the funniest person I ever saw perform. May joy and innocence prevail. And may his work live on forever. I miss him so damn much. We love you Robin. The world will never be the same.
Rest in Peace Robin Willliams You will be sorely missed. You gave me and doubtless many others some of the best humour and funny moments of our childhoods and up to the present. You'll never be forgotten. May you be happy and at peace.
His role in Dead Poet's Society absolutely changed my life. I want to be the teacher and inspiration he was to those kids in the future. It's terrible that he had to leave the world like this.
The man’s mind was lightening quick. He was a fantastic actor but he was an entertainer first - and a really special one. No one was as fast, as consistent and as genuine. A genius, who’s mind moved quicker than his mouth.
Whenever I am afraid of death I am thinking of people like Robin Williams or Alan Rickman. I just think wherever those two are now it cannot be that bad. I still feel those two were such brutal losses to our culture. Williams to me was always about pure joy, unapologetic honesty, compassion and nostalgia. He also has a warmth to him that is not overly sentimental but so genuine. I don't know what else to say. I Wish he was still alive.
Robin Williams is my favorite actor, and I never knew why I mean there were so many great things that he did. And then I think Doug made me just now realize why he was so great. Thanks Doug.
I was legit surprised at how deeply his passing shocked me. I didn't know it was possible to be this sad about the death of someone I never knew personally. He was one of a kind, and the world will never be the same without him. R.I.P.
We lost a great man....actor, comedian and icon....I really love Robin since I was a child.... It's just so sad to think that he is gone....From Good Will Hunting to Aladdin many of you knew him one way or another... R.I.P Genie. You've earned it.
I was going to go as a Minecraft character for Halloween this year, but seeing as I can do a pretty spot on impersonation of Mrs. Doubtfire, I'm definitely choosing her in honor of Robin. "When I die and I somehow end up in Heaven, I would hope that there would be laughter there." With you up there Mr. Williams, there will be. Rest in peace.
I was so shocked when I heard of his death. This was the first time a celebrity's passing affected me so much. For months I was saddened over it. I loved his movies as a kid. All I heard were great stories of how kind and giving he was. He would do anything to make others laugh and help people to feel better. It's sad to know that inside he was really struggling. It made me think there was something I should have done if I had known. It probably would have made no difference but I would have at least liked to show my support and understanding and encouraged more fans to do the same. I think another reason his death hit me so hard was because he looked a lot like my grandpa, who I love so much. Same blue eyes, large nose, thin lips. Also well my grandpa is quite the comedian himself. Thanks Doug for talking about what a great man Robin Williams was. He will be greatly missed.
Loved his kid movies as a child, now I love his more serious roles as well and of course his stand up routines. The spark of madness speech is very touching, and this video is very nice, good video Doug.
I was waiting to hear Doug's opinion on this. I don't know why, but probably because he's covered so many of Robin's films in his reviews I was curious to hear his reaction. It was very well done. And I'm going to check out that piece of stand-up. That "spark of madness" quote was great.
Robin is one of the only celebrities that I was genuinely sad to hear he'd passed, I grew up watching his movies and his comedy and he is sorely missed.
I remember when I heard the news. I had just been at camp with no electronics so I had no idea about news outside if camp for a week. My mum came to pick me up and I asked her what had been going on. She told me that Robin Williams had died and my heart became stone. The news hit me really hard and I was crying in front of all my campers and such. I'm happy about it now. He had been through so much that I think he'll be happier wherever he is now. I like to think that he and George Carlin are laughing it up together up there. We'll miss you Robin. :)
No one has ever made me laugh as much as Robin Williams, that;s how much i loved him I never felt bad even finding out he died didn't make me feel bad bad but instead I watched his stand up all night laughing constantly knowing even if he's dead someone that funny and caring would never want to see anyone sad, but critic you might not be the next robin williams but you are the next best thing honest to god you have made me laugh almost as much.
I've met Robin Williams once, we were able to hit it off really well. I've enjoyed a lot of his work, even the movies that were bashed on by NC. May he rest in peace.
And meeting someone like Robin Williams is a boring, mundane story because...?
hey you know what, your story is awesome, and the tip? I would have been just as happy to have served Robin Williams (because let's face it Winnipeg in the 2000s we didn't have alot going for us, all we had was an occasional mention on tv shows like the Simpsons and Desperate Housewives and celebrities coming here to shoot films, I still remember when J.Lo filmed a movie here)
When I heard the news i was beginning to teach my class of students and my wife called me and told me what happened. I stopped and went to my desk sat their for a few minutes told my students what happened and put Aladdin into my classroom VCR and we watched that for the rest of class.
+MrMeathead812 I don't believe you
+MrMeathead812 I don't believe you
Sam Kelly Good for you?
You sir have the correct priorities. When I heard about his passing I started to binge the movies he was in with my family starting with Ms Doubtfire and then Aladdin, to jumanji, and Patch Adams
R.I.P. Robin Williams
We'll never have a friend like you..... :(
I really wish Disney would release those 16 hours of Robin Williams ad libbing during Aladdin.
Ditto!
There's 16 hours of Robin Williams audio from Aladdin that Disney has locked away?
No fair.
I would pay good money to see that. Have every bit of cash go to a suicide and depression charity.

Only 16 hours?
I actually started crying when the news sank in. It shows how much of an impact a person has had on you when you didn't know them personally and yet you feel like you've lost a friend. He was such a bright spark of energy and laughter and he will be deeply missed. My thoughts are with his family.
So did I. :'(
I also cried for a whole hour straight when i heard he died....
Matrix803 but nobody is criyng for people diyng right now in palestin, africa, ukraine right?
Agreed, weapons of self destruction is my favourite stand up show of his.
Michael Welsh
And his bad movies are all at least watchable. Any bad movie can be watchable given the right scenario.
I enjoyed some of his "bad" movies. Hell, "Death to Smoochy" is possibly his funniest crude performance!
Savannah Ash you think wrong...
Conic025 Excuse me? Many people are how as I say, but I didn't say all depressed people. How would you know? Do you know Robin Williams personally?
Savannah Ash you said many, but thats wrong...
We will always remember this great guy.
To Robin Williams: Make those angels laugh, buddy.
That should pick you up."
Man bursts into tears.
Says, "But doctor...I am Pagliacci.”"
Good joke. Everybody laugh
Roll on snare drum. Curtains.
The only way I can think of it is that he was the Mozart of comedy..
love watchmen
Robin Williams was just a man. He was an ordinary man with extraordinary talent. He was a legend and will always be a legendary comic. His gift of making people laugh using only his wits and ingenuity is comic genius. He will be missed.
Long live Robin Williams.
indeed
My favorite Robin Williams moment is actually the commercial that had him and his daughter Zelda for Ocarina of Time 3D. To see how much he adored and loved his children...oh God. This just breaks my heart that such a wonderful and funny man has passed away...it's heartbreaking. :'( My heart goes out to his family friends and all my fellow fans grieving. May he find peace and love in God's arms now. :'(
I'm still gathering my thoughts. Such a great influence on my childhood.
*looks at comments* Wow.. Doug's awesome, but his fanbase is revolting. I'm kind of glad this one just went over their heads..
Go to the main website…you don't see the scum that is the youtube comments
I think I will from now on. Thanks Lobo.
***** Well I do enjoy his work. I find him very funny. So yeah. I'm a fan.
Here on RUclips, if you can't say something rude, don't say anything at all
lol. That is so true.
Oh Captain, my Captain. Rest In Peace. We love you.
"Dad, please tell us about that one time Robin Williams called you fat!"
He just always seemed to want to make people smile, always making a joke wherever he went.
After I heard about him dying, I watched What Dreams May Come and when the end came I cried so hard I almost couldn't breathe
Some people laugh the loudest, to hide their inner pain.
I can't imagine how Zelda is going through
I heard someone once say that the saddest people in the world are comedians.
You know the Rorschach Joke from Watchmen?
***** No, his last movie will be an animated film.
***** en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Absolutely_Anything
The new 'Night at the Museum' film will break the box office when it comes out, since I think that's the last film he did before he died. I hope the movie is amazing so his last film is a great one.
ooh! I loved him in Jumanji, Mrs Doubtfire and in Hook! :D Great man, he will be missed so much :(
Midnight Navigator I have a name for something like that the crow effect
I'm completely thrown back, I'm one of those kids that grew up in the 90's and looked to Robin Williams as another role model, to the point where I've learned more from him than anyone else,
I'm more disappointed than anything else.
+kchandaman
Remember it is not Robin Williams that was the director or wrote the screenplay. NC's character is just as he is.
Doug! I managed to hold it together till the very end! Dammit!
Who peeled all the onions??
That’s a good one 😂 But really I still miss him to😭
Me and my sis were just watching Aladdin on Disney XD and in the end, they actually showed Genie looking over the world as stars. It also says in memory of Robin Williams who made us laugh. It makes me want to cry.
Thanks for the words, Doug. Hearing someone else, especially you, acknowledge the impact he had helps dull the pain.
5 years already. Still missing Robin. 1951 - 2014.
This one _still_ hurts.
The fact that you looked to both Robin Williams and Jim Carrey as a kid, just like I did, made me smile!
Great video in memory of Robin!
I still cry every time I see or hear about Robin Williams. I can't watch Aladdin the same way either...
He was a legend. R.I.P Robin Williams
Excellent tribute. Robin Williams will be missed by the whole world for a long time.
RIP
Spike Shooter "All my love to you puppet. You're going to be alright."
When I found out about his death, I turned on the T.V and the headline on ITV Robin Williams is dead. I had tears running down my face.
in this age of mass media robin williams will live forever.
he gave us his all , we are lucky we got to see him and
he owes nothing to anyone any more.
thanks to you critic for this touching tribute.
ive had depression since I was 6 years old, and it's not anything that most people who haven't had it can really understand.
Aladdin, Hook, Mrs.Doughtfire...man I really hadn't noticed how many of my favorite movies were becuase of robin williams.
Robin Williams, I hope you are doing comedy for the Goddeses of Hyrule now.
Lol. A comedic slave XD
Miles Targosz:As do I,my friend.Robin Williams was the only person I know to name his daughter after a video game character.
Robin Williams was a part of my childhood as I'm sure he was for a lot of 90's kids. RIP
My childhood was destroyed when I heard about his passing. I will never forget about Robin Williams. When I always felt down in the dump I always put on a movie with him in it to cheer me up and others who felt the same way. Thank you Robin Williams for giving us laughter and smiles on our faces.
Thank you for sharing this. the world has just lost one of the few people it actually needed. All my sympathy to his family and friends.
This is the only celebrity death I've EVER cried of the news. And I only made myself even MORE sad by watching Aladdin with my girlfriend and family.
Man i really miss robin Williams he was my childhood but he will always be remembered r.i.p. Robin Williams
He will be missed.
Carpe Diem.
Hopefully "carpe diem" can replace that YOLO crap that keeps being thrown around. Expression with actual meaning, been immortalised by a great actor.
Or "You'll never have a friend like me"?
Maybe what he meant to say that it was resurrected, not coined.
Cerith Burrows
I never said he "coined" it, I said he "immortalised" it. Meaning he helped made it memorable. I know that it's a Latin term that obviously existed before, but many people are gonna think of Dead Poets Society when they hear or use it. Hell, the first time I heard the phrase was in high school in my film class when we watched a video of AFI's most memorable film quotes.
BadgerCheese94 They mean the same thing.
Man, I almost cried watching this and remembering all the great things Robin Williams has given us in his charisma, love and humor.
Hugs
This man's passing really knocked me for a loop. It's crazy how much you can miss a person you never actually knew. He just touched so many lives in the time we had with him.
How long ago... I'm still not over it. This was lovely
Carpe Diem. Seize the day. Something Robin did everyday. This loss has affected me in ways I can't comprehend. Goodbye, Genie... you are now free.
That old man "spark of madness" bit is probably my most beloved
thank you, Doug! from a fellow Robin Williams fan in Baku, Azerbaijan. You'll likely need to Google it. :)
P.S. reading Dave Itzkoff's book that a friend in Vegas bought on Amazon and had it delivered to me. So stoked!!!
Rip Robin Williams, may you live on in the hearts and minds of many.
No one can consciously control their emotions, no need to feel bad.
Be very wary of how you approach these matters because you might receive backlash from this measly little comment.
i wished you talked about his dramatic movies, but still thank you so much for this
Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts and your moments about Robin Williams Doug.
I quietly say “Robin Williams is dead”
My friend pauses and looks at me, confused and a little worried, like he hoped I was joking. I just give him a sad smile “He’s dead”
We spend an hour in almost complete silence, just sitting there, letting the news hit us.
Thank you!
Robin Williams was a great actor and I don't think anyone would replace him, we will miss you Robin.
Rest in Peace Robin Willliams
You will be sorely missed.
I can't believe he's gone.
Thank you Doug it really means a lot you did this review.
RIP Robin Williams. Goodbye Genie.
Ten years layer, it still hurts
That was very well descripted, Doug, and I agree
Robin Williams is my favorite actor, and I never knew why I mean there were so many great things that he did. And then I think Doug made me just now realize why he was so great. Thanks Doug.
R.I.P Robin Williams you will be missed, thank you for all the fun and laughs you gave us. 😭
He will be missed very much... *sighs* God rest his soul.
Thanks FOR very special And Amazing words FOR One of The greatest actors
"When I die and I somehow end up in Heaven, I would hope that there would be laughter there."
With you up there Mr. Williams, there will be. Rest in peace.
Robin Williams was and is the king of comedy
Now he's crackin up Angels in that Big Ol Stage in the Sky....
R.I.P you Comedic God
It's amazing what you could hide behind a smile..I should know.
RIP Robin Williams, you will be missed dearly.
I remember when I first saw Robin Williams in one of my most favorite childhood movies 'Hook'. Rest in peace Robin Williams.
Love how you mentioned the spark of madness. That's actually my favourite quote, too.
I've met Robin Williams once, we were able to hit it off really well. I've enjoyed a lot of his work, even the movies that were bashed on by NC. May he rest in peace.
Thank you D. Walker. We will keep the spark of madness igniting regardless of its size.
