    About eight years back I was working in this up-scale Indian restaurant as a waiter in Winnipeg, where Robin WIlliams happened to be filming a movie one summer.
    One afternoon Robin Williams came in, no fan fare, no handlers, just him looking for a decent spicy lunch. He was seated in my section, so I had the fortune of serving him that day. He was very softspoken, he cracked jokes but it wasn't the flamboyant character you see in television interviews. When he finished he left me an awesome tip (I forget the exact amount but it had to be ~100 dollars, and I barely did anything). He'd come in a few more times over the summer and every time from what I saw, he was just a generous man, with his time and attention, he never rushed people, always signed autographs, posed for pictures with people and the staff. Just a real humble, nice guy.
    Anyway, that's my boring anecdote.

      hey you know what, your story is awesome, and the tip? I would have been just as happy to have served Robin Williams (because let's face it Winnipeg in the 2000s we didn't have alot going for us, all we had was an occasional mention on tv shows like the Simpsons and Desperate Housewives and celebrities coming here to shoot films, I still remember when J.Lo filmed a movie here)

      It's simply that even great actors can do bad movies. Robin has done amazing films and proven that he is a fantasic actor and comedian. So odds are the terrible films he's been in mostly come down to bad directing rather than bad acting. In fact in all of these terrible movies Robin WIlliams is in, you can tell he's always trying to give a good performance.

    • @Ash-op2ql
      @Ash-op2ql 9 лет назад +14

      I think a lot of depressed people are like that though. They put on a happy face and make others feel better because it brings them joy through their illness. Some comedians tend to have depression, and it's even said that the funniest people are usually depressed. It's just so unfortunate that the world lost such a wonderful guy to this illness.

      Savannah Ash you said many, but thats wrong...

    • @Ash-op2ql
      @Ash-op2ql 9 лет назад +6

      Many is an unspecified number. I didn't not say a majority or all, I said a lot which there are. Wayne Brady, Marc Maron, Jim Norton, John Belushi, Chris Farley, Greg Giraldo, Woody Allen, George Carlin, Richard Prior, Conan O’Brien, Ellen DeGeneres, Louis CK, Sarah Silverman, Jim Carrey, Patton Oswalt, Owen Wilson and David Letterman are all comedians/ comedic actors who have openly talked about depression, who have ADMITTED to having depression, or have been found to have the mental illness from professionals after their death. The person who commented after me mention Rodney Dangerfield as well. And those are just the names I found after only 10 minutes of looking up the subject.
      My comment was to the original commenter who stated that they, "never knew that Williams suffered from depression because of his personality/persona he showed the world." Just because someone doesn't seem like they are depressed, doesn't mean they are not.
      Depression and mental illness is still seen to this day as a taboo subject and isn't talked about enough in our society. It wasn't too long ago that people would be hospitalized for an indeterminate amount of time in insane asylums because their mental disorders were seen as a burden to society and their families. Even for mental illnesses that were not threatening/violent to the people around them.
      As for comedians, they have even more pressure because of how publicly they talk about their life experiences. If you have ever seen Christopher Titus, you know he talks about every single embarrassing and humiliating part of his life. For some, admitting that they have depression is something that is too personal to share. This issue of depression with comedians is common enough knowledge that the LA laugh factory offers therapy sessions twice a week for comics.
      Lastly, psychologists all over the world have taken note that comedy is a defense mechanism against depression. Even people who are not professional comedians, tend to do this to mask their depression. As someone who has suffered from depression and mental disorder for 14 years, I can tell you this is true with some people, including me. I’ve had friends tell me that they didn’t like me when I was depressed, so I learned to hide it. “People don’t like you when you’re sad. Sad people aren’t fun” is something that commonly said to people with mental disorder from the people in their lives. You can’t assume that these feeling of “ there’s something wrong with you, you need to hide it” aren’t felt by the comedians, like William's, who suffer from depression as well. The way the media rips people apart when they are not seen as “perfect” is proof of that alone.
      I don’t know you. I can’t assume that you don’t have depression or exhibit the behaviors and feelings I have stated. Because regardless of what I said, depression is different for everyone. What I do know is you are clearly not a doctor, and you don’t know much about the subject. I won’t pander to your ignorance any further or indulge you by responding again.

      Me too, for like two days. .w.
      Robin Williams is the first actor I've ever known of by name. I saw him in Flubber at the theater when I was 8, and since that day, I was obsessed with that movie. Looking back on it now, Flubber isn't the greatest movie I'ver ever seen, but Robin really took the character of Professor Brainard and embellished it, to the point where he really WAS the professor. He knew how to really engulf himself in a role and make his characters believable and great in each movie, and that's what I think I really liked about him the most.

    Doug, this is a fantastic tribute to a truly funny and talented person. It's a shame that somebody had to die in order for us to finally discuss the issues of depression and suicide. As somebody who has experienced both, having manic depression and suicidal thoughts now and then, I remember peers never taking it truly seriously. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad people are discussing it, but why after a man died? It's a real shame, because I look back on Robin Williams films and see how goddamn happy he was, and yet, you can't help but think he was faking it most of the time.
    But, let's remember Robin Williams as that amazing, funny and touching person who entertained millions.

    So this is more of a personal story about him, and it's still my favorite.
    My dad used to travel a lot for work, and so he stayed in a lot of hotels. One time he was in the same hotel as Robin Williams. My dad always gets up early to go on the treadmill as a daily routine since he doesn't have much time to exercise otherwise. So, he is on the treadmill, doing his daily run, and Robin Williams walks into the room (there were a few other guys who were there doing weights or stretching or something) and Robin walks over to the treadmills. My dad nods at him, trying to be nice without bothering Mr. Williams, and Robin takes one look at my dad, and says: "Wow, you need this more than I do!" and he walks back out of the room. My dad's always been a good sport about it because seriously, it's Robin Williams. He made a joke about him. My dad felt more honored than offended and it was one of my favorite bedtime stories when I was little. "Dad, please tell us about that one time Robin Williams called you fat!"
    He just always seemed to want to make people smile, always making a joke wherever he went.

    Robin Williams has always been a huge influence for me. I also suffer from social anxiety, depression, and some other health issues. Like Robin Williams, I use humor and jokes to keep myself happy and also the people around me feeling happy. Humor can be a great tool for distracting yourself from certain illnesses but it doesn't get rid of the problems attached to the illnesses. Anyone who has 'unseen' conditions is a hero, especially people who have persevered and made it despite having those conditions. I will always respect Robin Williams for his humor, how he gave back to the people in his life, and his views on family values. He and now Leonard Nimoy will be greatly missed.

    I think my favorite Robin Williams moment would have to be the end of Mrs. Doubtfire. As a boy whose mother and father divorced at an early age, it was tough for me to cope because now my life was gonna change and I blamed myself for it. But when I saw the movie and it got to the end where Mrs. Doubtfire on her show was reading the fan letter about the fan's parents divorcing and explaining different kinds of families and reassuring her that everything was going to be OK, that kind of helped me get through my parent's divorce during the process. Robin was a great comedian, but when it came time to be serious, his brilliance really shined through. Me and many others are going to miss him so much and as Doug said, there might never be another guy like him. RIP

    When I heard he died, all I said was, "Tears of a clown." Then, anger and the selfishness of how could he do that; he should've got help. Over time, I came to accept his decision to end his own life. It wasn't mine and how could I think of what he did was selfish. I'm glad that he even graced my life at all as an entertainer. He'll live in my memories AND in movies.

    That military thing was inspiring. Few people understand how hard it really is to get the shaft for something, even when it is out of respect to something else, and Robin used it to his advantage. He up front tells everyone "I was worried that no one wanted to listen to me" in such a way, that it was hilarious. It's sad that it took the death of a great actor for a lot of people to see just how good he really was, myself included, but you know what? He lived a long full life, and it's clear that a lot of people appreciated him, and it's great to learn all of this about him now. It's just nice and inspiring. I want to go jog outside right now.

    I still remember the day I got this news. A friend of mine called me up and told me to turn on CNN. He wouldn't tell me what it was, all he said was that it was bad. I turn it on and there was a huge headline: ROBIN WILLIAMS DEAD AT 63. It was a big shock to me as Robin Williams was my favourite actor growing up. Everythime I saw a trailer to one of his movies I said to myself, "This must be good, Robin Williams is in it." Even to this day, I am still sad that he is gone. He was a wonderful man and will be missed. RIP Robin Williams, you always knew how to make us laugh.

    After i heard the news, i was in tears, not crying, just going through FB posts and a tear fall down, this never happen to me over a celebrity, i guess it's because of how much he means to me, i had this friend was sitting next to me and said, you didn't cry when your uncle died, if you wanted to cry over someone, you should do that over the people that are dying in Gaza, why do you care about one person, i said i never really knew my uncle, and it's tragic what is happening in Gaza, but i didn't feel this sad for them, maybe i'm a bad person, i don't know, but the truth is this guy, Robin Williams, was part of my life, i never met him, but i know him ever sense i was a kid, and i'm 25 years old now, i REALLY miss him, and that's coming from someone who didn't know him personally, I am really sorry for his family, and the people that DO know him. Hey, man. You're not a bad person. Feeling bad for someone, and feeling sad over someone are two different things. Just because you don't cry over a tragedy that you had little to no personal connection to doesn't mean you don't feel bad for the victims. You're not a bad person.

    • @sporeguy99
      @sporeguy99 10 лет назад +6

      You're not a bad person. If we mourned the death of every single person we would never get anything done. It's true what's going on in certain corners of the earth is tragic and shocking but ultimately there's little reason to cry over something or someone you don't have a personal connection to. Also that kind of argument is a fallacy itself unless your friend mourns all of their deaths which is highly unlikely.

      Last year was waiting Jumanji and Hook, those films I watched and hit me in a diffrent way. Maybe it was the qourter life crisis. But it hit on the importance and what his film gave too us. I was playing kingdom hearts ps2 game and that was a hit, hook was a hit near Christmas time for me. it's how fragile and easily questioned the things can be when you want to be an adult but being an adult you want to be a kid again, to show your expression and self. That childhood that hook showed with robin Williams gave us stuck around us since his passing. It hit on that level like kingdom hearts did where not just the dialogue but themes of it behind it you could recognise. Jumanji is a good film and I calm it the best one, new one us alright but its something that it misses. Robin Williams gave us so much. I dont think it was just internal how one RUclips biography put it with demons in his head. No that avoids the bigger issues. Its also external too. And I think that with anybody's mental health that what external pressure or media or what has bern exposed too Robin whatever it was played with him. The last part where his wife saw him on his pad and he looked alright walking in the bathroom and out. The thing is like anyone our mind wonders alot on things what we see and think. Not just internal but external. How do you deal with mental health with a polical, plural saturated social media society that is conflicted in itself? That might be a stretch but for long time now and I think its recovering slowly of comedians, people and its mental health awareness that we live now in the internet age needs to be taken care of. Everything is now content, mushed together, with context to be as though everything or anything can be truth. And that's the thing, I cant speak for Robin myself, but I can see something that may of occurd perhaps why even perhaps around him. We are social creatures needing closure and understand.

    ive had depression since I was 6 years old, and it's not anything that most people who haven't had it can really understand. True a lot of comedy and entertainment is brought out of the individual, *i myself use comedy to detract this condition.* but,.....it's terrible when we lose anyone, especially to such a mysterious and or stigmatized condition. Mental Health is just generalized and not understood overall..I am sad to say that I understand and can see through it, as one who does many of the same type of personality traits one with depression usually can pull off convincingly., R,I.P Robin. You will be missed and remembered for all the laughs you gave us. And this is a beautiful tribute you have done Doug. Very well done. When I saw the news that Monday night, it was so stormy and rainy where I live, and even though that's the kind of weather I personally adore, that was a moment where I really did associate it with sadness. Aladin, Flubber, and especially Hook were important childhood movies for me and my siblings. When I saw Dead Poets Society near the end of my senior year in high school, I fell in love with it. Robin is such an important figure in my childhood and I'll never be able to tell him that now. But thankfully, he left behind so much great work that can never be forgotten, and because of that, he will be able to keep entertaining people for ever.

    Man... I remember going to his comedy performance back in 2002 and I had just bought my first car. My dad was proud of me for keeping my grades up while working my first job he said he'd buy tickets to his show and we'll take my new car. We went and I ended up pitching in for the tickets cause I wanted front row seats. It was such a great show, he'd make you laugh so much you're stomach would be twitching from all the laughter. You'd be having aftershock from all the laughing the next day. If you were ever there in the front row I don't have to tell you, that front row was like the splash zone at Sea World. When he would do his viagra joke prepare for water. Or his marking the territory joke... lol he was going around spilling water on things says "that's mine, I own that, I'll take that" then he saw a woman in the front row with a low cut shirt and said "ooo those are nice (splash) they're mine now" it was hilarious.
    My favorite part was after the show, this was a massive show with tons of people seeing Robin after his most famous movies yet he treated it like a house party. After the show you could go up to him as he was meeting fans and signing stuff but not like a typical signing. He'd put on an encore there, joking and laughing with the audience. He'd stand there and talk to one person for 30 minutes as if he was just hanging out with friends, not like a celebrity at a public outing. I went up and he looked at me then looked at my dad and said "Those are some hairy arms he has, what do you buy him for soap... rogaine?" We laughed and he looked at me and said "Let me guess you're Irish or Scottish right? Thought so, listen dad cover your ears for a second I need to give him some advice. Okay look in a couple years.... or maybe tomorrow considering your arms are as hairy as mine are, you'll be growing some hair in weird places. Make sure you take care of that or else the girls at your high school will be saying 'Him? Don't have hook up with him I heard he's hung like a werewolf' trust me I learned that from experience" It was much funnier when he said it but everyone laughed. He signed some lobbycard my dad picked up, I didn't care for the signature I just wanted to meet him. Now I'm glad I got it signed.
    I always included my odd sense of humor in my articles and reviews, because Robin showed us that's what makes our work stand out. When you put yourself into something it becomes unique. And no one is more unique than Robin. Inspiration, great actor, hilarious comedian, charitable, kind, caring... there aren't enough words to describe his incredible personality. You always felt welcomed when he was there or on screen. Like Mr. Rogers telling you to come on in. He was a constant sources of faith in humanity. Even battled a terrible depression he still gave everything he had to make people happy. He was a bright light on such a shady planet, and even though he's gone that light will never be extinguished... it shined to brightly to simply fade away.
    Sorry this is so long. This doesn't feel like a celebrity death. Feels like a friend died.... and I'm going to miss him.

    About two week before the news hit, me and a handful of friends were in my parents vacation house, enjoying the last bit of our break before it was back to school. Me and one of my friends were starting a new education, so we were both nervous and excited. On one of the last days there, while it was really grey and rainy, we decided to watch movies that some in the group hadn’t seen before. As an example, I had never seen ‘My Neighbor Totoro’ so we watched that. Another movie we watched was Hooked and Jumanji.
    We all gushed over Robin and how much impact he had on our childhood, our slowly approaching adulthood, our humor, everything. We just all loved him. Once the vacation was over, I stayed with the friend that was starting the same education. First week passes, we catch a cold at the same time, and call in sick.
    I got up early that morning, went to the living room with my blanket wrapped around me, and sat by my laptop to just make the time pass until my friend got up. And there is was. News I didn’t know I had dreaded. I sat for maybe 15 minutes just finding more and more articles, as I desperately tried to find proof that it was just a hoax. But it wasn’t. I was stunned. My friend joins, sleepily saying good morning as he opens the door to the garden to let the dog out, clearly not seeing the tears in my eyes. I quietly say “Robin Williams is dead”
    My friend pauses and looks at me, confused and a little worried, like he hoped I was joking. I just give him a sad smile “He’s dead”
    We spend an hour in almost complete silence, just sitting there, letting the news hit us. It was like losing an uncle, a favourite teacher, a family friend. For two weeks we would talk about this, about him. That’s how much he meant to people. That’s the kinda impact this man had on thousands of people world wide. And I don’t think he knew that, but I hope he did, because he deserves to know. And I hope that spark of madness went with him once he left, because out of all of us, it sure would be a shame if he lost it, because it made so many people appreciate their own, little spark.

    Whenever I am afraid of death I am thinking of people like Robin Williams or Alan Rickman. I just think wherever those two are now it cannot be that bad. I still feel those two were such brutal losses to our culture. Williams to me was always about pure joy, unapologetic honesty, compassion and nostalgia. He also has a warmth to him that is not overly sentimental but so genuine. I don't know what else to say. I Wish he was still alive.

    I remember that night. A whole 12+ hours not knowing that Robin killed himself. When I finally found out, they showed a gifset of him as the Genie in Aladdin with RIP Robin as the caption and I did a double take. We were in enough problems after my sister's truck got some damage in it. When my mom got done talking with one of my aunts, I told her and she screamed "NO! NOOOOOO". That was the same way she reacted when Harold Ramis died too. Then before midnight, I pulled out the Flubber cassette and I still haven't watched it again yet. Flubber was the first movie I EVER saw with Robin in it.
