Lol Heidi, you have handy husband and sons. Why not have them build a beautiful square gazebo/pergola on the concrete slab?? Perhaps incorporate a small grill or outdoor kitchen within it.
I really, really appreciate you going through the gardens in the early spring when things are just emerging-it's hard to know what to look for with plants I haven't grown before. You are great at informing, explaining. So,thank you!
hello heidi! for the lavender.. it’s best to trim it to the spring… they get super woody if you don’t.. then eventually you can’t trim it..other you’ll kills the plant and it will only have growth from the top.. trimming it early spring keeps it from going woody 👍🏻
This is great. I enjoy seeing your garden progress from early wakeup, annual selection and installation, to early and mid summer and finally putting your garden to sleep.
I really enjoyed the tour! I’m in Nova Scotia 🇨🇦 and my garden is just starting to wake up so I don’t feel too far behind you. Our zone has just changed too so think I’m in the same zone as you. It’s nice to have found you as most channels I follow are way ahead of us. I will definitely be adding some hellebores for early colour! Yours are all so beautiful 💕
No solid fence. It doesn’t just say stay away, it limits the scope of the eye, and the backdrop for your own plantings. Sort of like a painting with no background color. There is a cozy sort of rhythm to your design, with the gentle curves. All this adds greatly to the plants in the beds.
Can’t keep hosta because of deer and rabbits. Dug out 18 year old hosta and planted hellebores and never looked back. The hellebores are gorgeous, don’t have to be sprayed and have bloomed forever. I love that they have a presence during the winter. The colors are lovely.
@@gardencrossings I am really surprised as I have heard that they are poisonous, and to even be sure to wear gloves when dealing with them. Also heard that if you have cats or dogs who eat plants, don’t get them. That would be devastating if they were eaten. But, northern climes are so much more demanding on animals. I will keep hoping they keep their distance. Will let you know. Hope business is great.
Heidi, you could cut the top portion off the birdhouse. Then either mount on another surface somewhere in your garden. Or attach it on top of a 4x4 post just so it doesn't go to waste. Will also allow you to put the other item in it's current location.
DUH!!!! That is a great idea. Why did I not think of that!!! I will have my son take a look and see if that will work. Thanks for the idea. I really need to think smarter, not harder.
Hey Heidi I'm so glad tour time has begun. You know how you like to advise us how the hibiscus is one of the last to show itself. We'll in zone 7a Richmond my Midnight Marvel said Hold my beer cause it is up and growing right now. We did get close to 90 degrees on Tuesday.
Heidi, years ago we had to cut down a large blue spruce. My son drilled holes into the stump so I could stick rebar in and place blue wine bottles on it for garden art. This year I noted a couple wete on the ground. My stump is rotting so it's time for new art or pot or ...
I found this very helpful. I was looking at my own garden and panicking, why haven’t my such-and-such plants come up? Are they dead?!! It’s good to see that yours haven’t either, and that it’s normal. I also discovered what I needed in that empty spot in my partial shade garden- Hellebores! Going take a look at your website now.. Loved the walk through your garden!
Hi Heidi. The video was very interesting and nice. I always learn something from you. I just got my plants from you today and I am anxious to start planting. It’s still a little cold here in New York. The plants look very healthy, can’t wait to get going. Thank you Heidi
I cut back my butterfly bushes hard each year (they are in pots), but in Atlanta winter of 2022-23 we had a week of 13 degrees and most everyone lost butterfly bushes. Don't you have deer that eat all the hostas and daylilies? God bless ya'll.
Interesting to see how the arborvitae have lasted where you water regularly. I assumed they didn't need regular watering after being established. Very good to know because I might plant them in my yard for privacy in the next few years. Do you think they'd do okay in an area where water stands after heavy rainfall?
These have had standing water around them when we get a heavy rain. Our backyard is actually a drainage basin. But rarely does the rain set for more than a few hours.
I'm sorry Heidi I'm with your hubby here wirh a solid fence. It's just my preference but I don't want to know anyone exists neogbour wise except what's happening in my yard. But that's why I moved from a city to 10 acre property with no neighbors.
Hi Heidi..I live very close to Zeeland. I have a butterfly bush I have had for almost 10 years. This year I have exactly only 3 to 4 leaves closer to the bottom of the plant and nothing more. Nor do I see any growth or buds anywhere on the branches looking to emerge. When I trimmed it up this spring I am not seeing green in the stems. Do you think it might have not made it this past winter? Or do I give it more time to see if there will be more leaves. I am used to it with much more leaves this time of year.
@@gardencrossings Thank you Heidi. Glad to know I have hope. Would have hated if I lost it. Such a huge staple for my back yard and this actually has a beautiful fragrance to it that is simply lovely.

That would look nice, but we don't hang out in the back yard so much anymore.
I really enjoyed your home garden tour. Thank you.
Thank you for walking through the garden with me

Yes mine could use a trim

Thanks for following along
Love listening to your chimes, so soothing. Thanks for the tour especially the Hellebore, so pretty.
You are so welcome!
I enjoyed the tour of your garden. Your hellebores are beautiful. I just planted 13 of them in my woodland garden bed.
They are going to look so nice! A great start to flowering season

I have a 6’ trellis fence and an arbor. I’ll have to show you next time I’m in the garden center.
I would love to see it

They are a nice option that usually are deer resistant. ( Except for mine in the Northern Michigan garden, the deer eat them)

I am never cutting back my butterfly bushes again.I have lost a couple and it's a tough loss, like losing a pet!!
It can be. It really depends on where you live though.
I feel you really don’t need any fence on your back garden. 👍🏻🇨🇦
I agree, more for looks than function

You could tie the arborvitae together. That's what @AaronLeboutillier did when their arbs split from snowfall.
Yeah, i would rather they just go away and get replaced.

Thank you so much for letting us be a part of your garden.❤🌼❤
The fence problem. I would have a half size real wood fence in. The same look has u have now but in wood fence.
If you plant enough, know one will ever see the imperfection. Money is better spent on flowers, right?😁
Love the tour !! Will you be doing a video about fertilizing since there are many out there ?
Hum, I will have to talk to Rod about that. He is the fertilizer guy😁
It's great to see your beautiful garden. Your hellebores are beautiful. What's the name of the yellow variety? Also, when is a good time to move them?
The yellow one is an older variety, but it would be close to Spanish Flare, Tropical Sunset or California dreamin
Beautiful garden Heidi. May I ask if that was only 1 yellow hellebore plant originally? I know that they do like to naturalize. Thank you.
Yes, it was 1 plant to start
My hellebore did not come back from our winter
That is sad. Don't give up on them

Yes in zone 8 a good trim is beneficial. We have an occasional deer walk along the creek. Not much damage, fingers crossed

That would be true if you had 'bad' neighbors, but we have nice ones.

Give it time. It sounds like it is going to come back from the base this year. Butterfly bushes can act as annuals some years here.

that concrete pad needs seating pergola fire pit outdoor kitchen and containers Not Grass
That would be nice but we dont hang out in the back yard.
Why don’t you just tie the branches up instead of trimming them out causing bald spots ?
I hope that these trees can be replaced.
