- These days, you might not want too many Windows 10 updates given all the problems they tend to cause. But the fact remains that if you can't update Windows due to some cryptic error message, you're still in trouble. You're missing out on security and reliability updates that you obviously need! What to do when Windows Update keeps giving you the dreaded 'Retry' button along with an obscure error message that it can't update??

Just so that everyone that comes to this video in the future; this does work, but in my case when I followed the steps to the tee, I didn't have to reboot. I went to windows update and it said "You're all up to date" How that happened is anyone's guess, but it automatically let the updates through when all that other data was cleared. But it's great advice.
Did all this and all was well up until the configuration stage. It gets to 99% and then I’m slapped in the face with the ‘We couldn’t complete the changes

Scottie it didn’t work, what do I do? It doesn’t say retry though, it just says you’re missing important security updates and fixes, and doesn’t give me an option to update.

It seemed as though it was going to work except two of the files within the software distribution folder wouldn’t delete as it stated I had it opened elsewhere. Any suggestions?

This didn’t work for me. I’ve been trying to get it to update for a year! I try different suggestions and then just end up putting it on pause. It goes so far and says “we couldn’t complete the updates undoing changes”

@@MrCrustyJusty Did you ever get it working? im in the same situation, Every time i update anything at all when it restarts it gets to 7% then says restarting then when it boots back up it says Undoing changes and restarts again and cleans up and boots to login. been stuck like this for months now
@@PointingToNull no I didn’t. I tried everything in the video and the linked page. Still nothing worked. I started to see that less and less programs would actually install without an error.
I also discovered that somehow my safe boot was also removed. I’m not sure if all of this happened after upgrading my Intel Bios. I tried to reinstall safe boot that but also had no luck.
So this week I just created a new Windows installation media. It reinstalled fine and was able to keep all my files in a Windows old file.
I had no viruses so not sure what happened. But it all works fine after the latest Windows creation media
I tried this, looked like it worked, then required a restart, got the same message again, says unable to complete update and will uninstall the downloaded contents.... I gotta keep lookin...

@@leecollins5479 foudn a video, cant remember which one, but basically you gotta go to windows site and reinstall it, worked for me. but i suggest you look at a video under this issue, a guy shows what to do if the first part doesnt work. Dont want to be responsible for something worse happening, he'll provide a link too
I tried the assistant tool.. it downloaded, rebooted, and kept rebooting, finally said putting computer back to old settings or something.. I tried this method as well.. stopped both services, deleted files in the folder, rebooted, went to run windows update.. nothing happened. just click check for updates and it goes away. I'm stuck on version 1909 and have been forEVER now. I have windows 10 pro

Mine just says "your device is missing important security and quality fixes" I've tried doing this and other things in the command prompt as well as using windows 10update assistant, but mine is just saying "undoing changes made to your computer" each time I try to download the update, can anyone help????

Hi everyone, none of this worked for me and I spent hours trying to fix the problem. I finally fixed it when I read someone's comment saying they updated their BIOS. Mine were last updated in 2017. Once I updated the BIOS I ran the ISO file and installed Windows 10 keeping my files and apps and it was finally fixed.
Thanks for the information Scottie but UNFORTUNATELY it didn't work. I also tried and followed every step in your other online guide and disabled all anti-virus and firewalls as well as removing disks and other peripherals but still no joy. It gets ( as always ) to 98% and stops and gives me the, now VERY FAMILIAR message and undoes the updates.
Unless you have another idea I'll have to either live with it as it is and no future updates or I'll have to format and hope that that fixes it..any fresh ideas you have would be most welcome but unfortunately I'm not a techie and what you've outlined thus fart is about as techie as I can do.

Hello, i went into my services, and i don't have that windows update file. I see "windows time" and then after it says "windows update medic service". After that it says WinHTTP Web proxy Auto- . What should i do? My windows 10 won't update. Please help if you can. Thank you!
mines the 0.01 percent that wont update.trying to update 20h2 on my gpd win max.installs and need a restart the stops installing at 7 percent then uninstalls the update,it wont install the feature update to 21h1 either

Should be safe. I've done it a gajillion times on different machines, and all it ever did was fix Windows Update.

I also noticed I had 1 more file than you did called SiH but I deleted it along with the others so idk if that was supposed to be deleted or not
Hey. I can’t delete the folders in the software distribution folder. It says they are open in another program. 🤷♂️😅
You may have to kill the services a second time... Sometimes they restart right away, which then locks the files in the software distribution folder. If that doesn't work, then... that's weird!!

I cant even open the services app:
MMC cannot open the file C:\\Windoes\system32\services.msc
This may be because the file does not exist, is not an MMC console, or was created by a later version of MMC. This may also be because you do not have sufficient access rights to the file.

My issue is as follows, I would appreciate a reply for help sir. My PC says “update and restart” or “update and shutdown” however whenever I choose these to turn off my PC nothing happens, it just turns off as normal and never even attempts to update. Also, whenever I click windows update in settings it just sits there and loads forever, nothing pops up. When I run the troubleshooter for windows update it doesn’t detect a problem. What should I do?
If the fix in this vid doesn't work, then I'd try this:
1. Click start, type 'command'
2. Right-click Command Prompt and Run as administrator
3. Type commands one at a time:
a) sfc /scannow
b) dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
That should fix just about everything. Fingers crossed!
@@ScottiesTech thank you so much for your reply and help! :)I ran the scan on its own and it said it repaired the files that were corrupted. Reboot, same problem. So then I ran the scan again and Repaired corrupted files again, but this time I did what you said in the video alone with the system scan repair and still the same issue. However now when I reboot it says “getting windows ready” before shutting off and when the bios screen shows it says “updating system 100%” But still the windows update screen doesn’t load and it never says “updating” or anything. Do you have any other ideas? Looking forward to hearing from you :) thank you!

I’ll save this information and use it if it does not install after doing other things seen across the entire internet. I did a disk cleanup, turned of Windows virus protection and will save this if it does not install after all of that. Thank you Scottie as this is new step that I had not seen until now.
Sadly, this didn't work for me either. I performed a full reset and did this again. Nope. I think my laptop is busted. 😐

@@Anonymous_IGN good day to you. HAPPY Day after Christmas. Sadly I did not get laptop issue resolved. The internal battery died and it's soddered (sp??) on and off the that ended that. Fix was a refurbished (new to me) I laptop. Thanks for asking and good luck with yours.

Hey So i tried deleteing the software distribution folder but in the download folder, data store folder, and the reporting events text document wont delete cuz it keeps saying "the action cant be completed because the folder or a file in it is open in another program" i made sure to close out of all tabs but it still keeps saying that.
If that happens, usually I just reboot and then try again, and the folders are then unlocked. Usually...

I am smart enough to follow these tutorials but unfortunately there is no way I would ever find these solutions on my own..
