If grew up in a Mopar family. We had DeSotos, Dodges, and Plymouths. I had mostly the late 60 muscle cars, GTX, Road Runner, and 340 Duster etc. Of course we loved the power, and torque. As a kid I loved that, as my own cars rusted out, they became even faster. The best part about the late 50s and early 60s Mopars, is they all looked like they were designed for intergalactic space travel. Love the Custom Royal Lancer Super D convertible. It's sweeeet !

My favorite 50’s car. The D500 convertible, with record player is so rare, I can see why this miraculous restoration was done. I saw a two door hardtop in Cuba, in this magnificent color combo. The gentleman used painted coke bottles to repair the tail lights (as parts are hard to get there).👏👍Thanks Lou and Ken!🙏🇺🇸
Stunning! I take particular pride in knowing that these MOPARs by Exner are more valuable than bowties and ovals of the period (of course there are some fuelie vettes that are exceptions). This is truly a beautiful unit. .
I loved the fins on this car ! It seems 1959 was THE year for almost EVERY manufacturer. After that, they all seemed to either get rid of them or tone them down. Beautiful example of a late 50's styling.
Hi 20alphabet, Agreed it would be fun to see more of these and at the same time, the rarity of this car is what makes it so special to see one today, Lou
in 1959 the canadian dodge was called a viscount (fury), plymouth body, interior and tailights and both were built in windsor, ont. dual antennas were an option on viscount and fury, cool!
Interesting construction note: the fins on the 59 Dodge look grafted on, not flowing from the body panels. Compare these fins with 59 Plymouth, Imperial, DeSoto fins. Virgil Exner was really having fun with the Dodge styling. Very much influenced by jet and rocket designs, including illustrations for science fiction art and comics. Just look at those tail lights. The paint just screams 1950s and exotic tropical locations. Another great find Lou.

“HIghway HiFi”...what a hoot!! This car is probably the absolute epitome of Mid-century automotive design and colors of any car manufacturer. This chrome is when chrome was actual chrome and unlike chrome-plated plastics pieces of today’s cars.
Highway HiFi is an unusual recordplayer in that both grooves on record & stylus tip radius are half the size of a normal Lp.Higher than usual music storage 16 & 2/3rds RPM records playing for 1/2 hour per side.Contemporary reports give the unit favourable reports on account of it being near impossible to make the pick up arm skip no matter how rough the road. The shortage of record titles for this format means that these players are rare today.Kim Gutske will cut records with music that you want to listen to for these machines. Both car & music system are examples of the world's highest standard of living-written by a non U.S. resident.

Hi Brady Dog, Happy to read you enjoy the rarity of this car :-) Cool info on the records, thank you for viewing and sharing. It's my pleasure to share with you, and you're welcome, Lou
Thanks Lou. Really love the detail art and color designers were creating in this era. Cars have become slightly more interesting in most recent years but we'll never get back the fluted, filigree, cloisonne brocade etc details we had back then. One thing I hoped I'd see in the video was a demonstration of the swivel seat operation. They turned out only about 45 degrees, not like the 90 degree swivel seats available in some GM cars of the '70s. There are illustrations of this function in company sales literature showing how a long legged lady in an evening dress could maintain her modesty during entry and egress.
I LOVE HOW THE OWNER OF THIS BEAUTIFUL DODGE MAKES SURE HE'S HOLDING A CLOTH IN HIS HAND SO AS NOT TO GET ANY HAND OR FINGERPRINTS ON HIS BEAUTY , SOMETHING I ALSO DO WITH MY 1991 CADILLAC BROUGHAM D'ELEGANCE !!!
That's a beautiful car there nice job on the restoration it was pretty rough. I like the two tone color and those fins on back are nice. Awesome looking interior and love all that chrome too
Virgil must have had a mild OCD because the details show that he had a Theme to every area . Take a look at the LIGHTER knob at 00:06:06 and then go to the Wheel covers at the 00:08:48 mark to the same 4 prong design in a larger scale. The record player was an Option in the 1957 Bel Air..... but even after the breakthough for Transistor around 1956 where the price came down , that 1959 Player still needed time to warm up the Vacuum tubes because the high-end 1959 Tbird actually boasted about the Optional radio with 6 Tubes .
50s Mopars are truly amazing, thank you for letting us know. I am 20s years old and currently getting my license done, and once I get it I am considering picking up a 58 Plymouth suburban that popped up for sale in my country (I'm European) These cars are literally the fast and the fabulous

Thanks Lou, great video.... Interestingly, my Grandfather bought the 1959 Dodge Station Wagon that I spent lots of time in; and my Parents got it for a few years before & after I got my Driver License 1960-64(?), as I had concerns about Dating with a Wagon... Anyways, remember it as bulletproof transmission/engine & big, in a two tone cream colors( rear face seating, etc)
Interestingly makes one wonder about the Station Wagons, what were produced , And Options/colors , any left... ? do believe some were optioned out: especially in later years & other Makes,,,,,,,,!!!!
My grandpa had a 1957, Dodge Coronet, D500, 8.75 posi rear, 4 door sedan, red/ white. He had lots of issues with the transmission...he said it was air cooled...must have been the 2 speed. My Mom used to drive it some...she said it was powerful. He had to get the cylinder heads re worked also. So, he traded it in on a 1963 Dodge 330, 318 Torqueflite 727...Aqua Blue. I wish he had kept the 57 longer...I would have it today.
@@loucostabile I knew you would appreciate it...most car guys has similar experiences...kinda like "the one that got away". I wish I could trade places with ya....you have seen so much...some extraordinary autos. My personal favorite would be a 1956 Packard Caribbean...2nd, a 57 or 58 Pontiac Bonneville(tri power or fuelie). Take care!
Larry and Clark.....Money and engines, is most of what happened. Chevy had the 348, solid lifters, High Performance cam, AFB four barrel.....was lighter, four speed on the floor, 4.11 rear end.....Never got to pricing on the Dodge. As for color, I assure you, I am and was a guy....and thats how it sat, in the back lot...I still like the color.....as did some real red blooded American boys and men....girls too. So, eat your heart out Clark !
I haven't seen very many Dodges of that era, so this was a real nice surprise. Such a beautiful car, from the color to the tail fins to the grille to the headlights--everything! Truly the golden age of Detroit. And those records are 16 2/3, not 16 1/2. I wouldn't want to actually use that turntable because if you hit a bump or something while driving (a very real possibility where I live), it could potentially scratch the record.
The Super D-500 was Dodge's TOP PERFORMANCE OPTION !!! To find one in the Top-Line Custom Royal Convertible TODAY is the equivalent to finding one of the *EIGHT* 1969 Firebird Trans Am Convertibles manufactured that year !!!
A excellent example of Chrysler's Forward Look design. Absolutely gorgeous. In the description it says it has a Hemi head V8.That is not a Hemi. These cars came with 383's
You are correct. I believe the DeSoto Adventurer also came equipped with the dual quad 383 in 59. I think the 59 Chrysler 300-E got the new 413 Wedge and the top Plymouth Fury engine option in 59 was a dual quad 361 Wedge. I could be wrong though

That thing is just nuts and I mean that as a compliment. And what a starting point...not much more than a cowl and a VIN. There is so much to look at it almost hurts
Beautiful car! And great video. Seeing those pictures of what it used to look like was fantastic, as well as the literature! It had an emblem on the gas tank filler door. I'm surprised you made no comment re: that as I have never seen an emblem put on the gas tank filler door before. Also, that's 16 2/3 RPM, not 16 1/2 RPM on the "Highway Hi-Fi" record. It happens that 2 x 16 2/3 = 33 1/3, which is the RPM for LPs. So it seems obvious that they slowed it down to 1/2 speed. Keep up the good work Lou! I love your Ancientmobile vids!
That 1959 Dodge Custom Royal Lancer Super D500 convertible is spectacular. The 1950's was the real car luxury era. Thanks for the video 😊.

Hi Bluto Blutarsky
, Happy to read the details you know and enjoy :-) You're welcome, Lou
I LOVE HOW THE OWNER OF THIS BEAUTIFUL DODGE MAKES SURE HE'S HOLDING A CLOTH IN HIS HAND SO AS NOT TO GET ANY HAND OR FINGERPRINTS ON HIS BEAUTY , SOMETHING I ALSO DO WITH MY 1991 CADILLAC BROUGHAM D'ELEGANCE !!!
Nice and tidy :-)
That's a beautiful car there nice job on the restoration it was pretty rough. I like the two tone color and those fins on back are nice. Awesome looking interior and love all that chrome too
Hi Pete Medina, High praise for the details of this car :-) Lou
Back in the day when Chrysler was the leader in innovation. Those hub caps are my all time favorites. Just beautiful.
Hi YOUGOTIT210
, Happy to read these hubcaps are "all time favorites" :-) Lou
Lou , thank you for showing so many gorgeous cars !!! This is the first time that I've seen a record player in a car. Awesome ride !! 👍👍
Hi Gary Desbois, You're welcome, and he's another record player car for you to enjoy! Lou ruclips.net/video/UMKZc_W-xto/видео.html
What a transformation on this car you got to love the color combinations from the 1950s
Happy to read you enjoy the color combo of this car :-)
50s Mopars are truly amazing, thank you for letting us know. I am 20s years old and currently getting my license done, and once I get it I am considering picking up a 58 Plymouth suburban that popped up for sale in my country (I'm European)
These cars are literally the fast and the fabulous
Hi Gabriel Coelho
, Wishing you great success in your driving career. Please share this RUclips Channel with your "Car Friends" :-) Lou
Another GREAT car featured, Lou !!! You are tops when it comes to showing these fine automobiles !! This car has ALWAYS intrigued me. The front end of this fine ride looks SO PISSED OFF !!! Absolutely loved the original add-on of the "highway hi-fi" !! On a good day, I am sure this super-rare original beauty could fetch quite a bit over 100 k !!
Hi alan spagnolia, Happy to read you enjoy this car :-) Glad you're along for the ride, Lou
What a flamboyant ride! This styling will overshadow any Aventador or Chiron.
High praise :-)
Love the intimidating front end and everything else. Excellent restoration. A step back in time 😁
Hi David Kastin, "A step back in time" Exactly :-) So much FUN ! Lou
I own this exact car, also in rose/coral & with the built-in record player. It has lived in A/C storage since my father passed 15yrs ago - no clue what to do with it.
thanks for the great video

345 BHP!!! ...when an XK Jaguar would make 210.
Very good vídeo. Wonderful details.

Gorgeous car. Great color combination. Amazing interior. Simply gorgeous!
Hi Story Teller, High praise :-) Lou

coin edging on the DODGE emblem- just absolutely fantastic.
Hi postaltraining, I like your attention to details :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
Almost over the top but considering the life it led (hauling rocks???), it's astounding.
man, mill reminds of Christine.
Hi g mat, Enjoyed reading your comment on this car -) Lou
I believe these came with a dual quad 383 Wedge Head...the first year of that engine. Gorgeous car
Very nice car and video Lou. Thumbs Up Liked.
Hi bluesharp59, Happy to read you enjoy this car & video :-) Lou

Great car and love the color combination, thanks so much for sharing and"Howdy from Texas 😁"!!
Hi Greg from TX, Happy to read you love this color combo :-) You're welcome, Lou
Wow! I love this one!
Happy to receive a "Wow! from you :-)
Thanks Lou, great video....
Hi Opera, Happy to read this one brings back memories of your Grandfathers car :-) You're welcome, Lou
Interestingly makes one wonder about the Station Wagons, what were produced , And Options/colors , any left... ? do believe some were optioned out: especially in later years & other Makes,,,,,,,,!!!!
Now that’s a bad ass dodge!
NICE !
Doesn't need horn . It's a Dodge. Get it dodge.
Hi Michael Cook, Happy to read this video / car brings back memories of your Grandpa's car :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
@@dennisconner8014 What the Hell are you talking about?
@@loucostabile I knew you would appreciate it...most car guys has similar experiences...kinda like "the one that got away". I wish I could trade places with ya....you have seen so much...some extraordinary autos. My personal favorite would be a 1956 Packard Caribbean...2nd, a 57 or 58 Pontiac Bonneville(tri power or fuelie). Take care!
@@michaelcook768 instead of blowing a horn to avoid an accident, you dodge it. It's a Dodge.
I wanted this car, in hardtop version, in 1959, settled for a new Chevrolet byscane two door , in coral. Beautiful Dodge here.
A far cry from a fleet level Chevy Biscayne..
What happened?
.
@@larryhawkins3294 No guy buys a car in coral, it's a woman
s color!
Happy to read you enjoy the looks of this car :-)
I haven't seen very many Dodges of that era, so this was a real nice surprise. Such a beautiful car, from the color to the tail fins to the grille to the headlights--everything! Truly the golden age of Detroit. And those records are 16 2/3, not 16 1/2. I wouldn't want to actually use that turntable because if you hit a bump or something while driving (a very real possibility where I live), it could potentially scratch the record.
Hi HotWax93, Thank you for sharing your knowledge on the records, Lou
@@loucostabile You're welcome. Sorry if I sounded rude or nitpicky.
Hi
williamg2552, Happy to read you enjoy the rarity of this car :-) Lou
A excellent example of Chrysler's Forward Look design. Absolutely gorgeous. In the description it says it has a Hemi head V8.That is not a Hemi. These cars came with 383's
Hi Statimtek
, Happy to read you enjoy this "excellent example" :-) Lou
You are correct. I believe the DeSoto Adventurer also came equipped with the dual quad 383 in 59. I think the 59 Chrysler 300-E got the new 413 Wedge and the top Plymouth Fury engine option in 59 was a dual quad 361 Wedge. I could be wrong though
@@jeremythompson9122 Yes.In fact I believe 1958 was the last year for the first generation "Fire Power" Hemi's
Very nice Lou and thanks for the post. :-)

thank you, this i what a real auotomobile is. love your vids , good scenery that compliments your work, plus the well done job the owner did with his car, chrome & detailed to a Tee. very nice :) i'd like to park it on a putting green but golfers may not agree.

That thing is just nuts and I mean that as a compliment. And what a starting point...not much more than a cowl and a VIN. There is so much to look at it almost hurts
Hi Steve S, High praise for all the detail on this car :-) Lou
WOW Stunning
Hi geoffdundee

i couldnt resist commenting - its gorgeous :)
very nice one
I agree :-)
Hey Lou, too bad you didn't tell the guy to put the "top" down. That would have made up for the horn NOT working.🤣✌💚
Hi Gary Eagleson, That's a good idea :-) Lou
Hi Marshall Curtis, High praise for this episode :-) Appreciate your kind words on the videos, Lou
