  • Imagine a Rottweiler with slightly taller legs, a Siberian Husky with a shorter coat, or a Tibetan Mastiff less majestic without its signature lion-like mane. Did you know that today's gentle giant, the Great Dane, used to be a bit smaller? Or that the wrinkly, lovable Bulldog didn't always have so many folds? Believe it or not, some of your favorite dog breeds looked very different just 100 years ago!

But Both originates from the Scotch collie, that still exist to Day.
Both Scotch, Border, rough, smooth and welsh collies, plus the English shepherd are very close related..
And DNA shows that Border collie are a mix between a roman shepherd breed, and a Viking shepherd breed.
Look at danish spids, and Pastore della Lessinia. You can absolutely see the similarities.

collie is not border collie. They are two different races, in fact very different. American knowledge about European breeds is generally deficient. They tend to make breeds worse, such as the Doberman, which in Europe continues to be an imposing dog with a guard temperament, and in North and South America they have transformed the dogs into dogs that look like greyhounds because they are so thin and slender. Well, everyone has their own tastes. In any case, best of luck to you, looking for more accurate information.

If you don't like the show version of the breed you want, then do some reserch on their origin, and many times there are still the original breed allive.
Collie/ Border collie = search for Schotch or Welch collie, or English shepherd.
German shepherd = search for altdeutche hütehunde.
Spaniels = search for the field version (but be prepared of that they most likelly has a higher energy level and preydrive)
Doberman = search for the european type, and especially east european.
Chow chow or Shar pei = search for Chongquing dog, thou to import them are a nightmare.
Kangal = if you don't want the hevier and more agressive Kangal, search for the Karabash. Thou it's still not a first time dog owner breed, they are still very much a mastiff dog, and need serious socialition through all its life.
An alternative to Dachshund is the westfälische dachsbracke.
If you think that the English Basset hound are to overbread, then search for Basset Artesien Normand, or the other frensh Basset breeds.

I dont like that you use the word refine so many times for breeds that have been made physically (health wise) worse. I think showing dogs has been one of the worst things to happen to dogs in general as the focus on appearence and 'conforming' to breed standards that way has only led to more extremes. Surely the focus should have been on the dogs ability to do their job not what they look like

When making those videos you're clearly following an educational purpose.
You should pay attention on displaying correct pictures of the breeds you're talking about...
Bright example is the Irish Setter..
You had placed the pics of the SPANIEL there instead , twice!
In Bassett hounds you had applied a BIGGLE at some point..
Collie, opposing the first pic, you moved on to the border collie, while later referring to Lassie, which is again, Scottish collie or the "rough" collie... Not border collie..
Those are completely two different breeds..
At the bulldog of nowadays you advertised bully, which comes from pitbull line..
    There's plenty of real buldogs..
Please pay attention, as you're ruining your own work, making it sloppy and lame..
    Unfortunately.

Regardless of the accuracy of this video, it breaks my heart. Selecive breeding per se doesn’t need to be a bad thing. However, due to the focus on looks over functionality and health, so many breeds have been, IMHO, ruined. Inability to breathe comfortably, skin issues, joint issues, heart issues, spinal issues, severe and incurable mental illness due to inbreeding (aka Sudden Rage Syndrome), highly increased incidence of cancer, digestive issues, vastly shortened life span, etc etc etc.
Anyone who’s had to have a beloved pet euthanasised because they literally had their spine explode (herniated disk) and severing a good portion of their spinal cord, rendering them paralysed and incontinent (Dachshund), or condemned to a life of excruciating pain from the hips down that even a hip replacement won’t help (severe hip dysplasia and muscle dystrophy, German Shepherd), or permanent shortness of breath so severe they die of heat stroke, English Bulldog) will understand what I mean.
I've consciously abstained from owning the breeds I mentioned for those very reasons. The dogs I've had and that weren't rescued had well-researched lineage, showing as diverse ancestry as possible with absolutely no in-breeding up to four generations back, with which I mean completely separate lineage. Medical testing for the most common genetic afflictions known for the breed not just on the parents, but at least three generations back as well. Not just the breeder's word but the paperwork to back it up.
I don’t care if the lineage boasts ‘champions’ as the shows still focus way too much on physical traits such as how tall/short the dog is, how ‘sharp’ the ‘stop’ is (connection between the skull and the bridge of the nose) or how short the nose is instead of how long, how ’long’ the back is etc. A lot of those breed standards are minimum standards health-wise.
Who wants a dog with cranial bones that didn’t fuse, leaving them vulnerable to brain injury? Or with a skull too small to fit it’s eyes? A dog that’s in danger of blowing the discs between their spine’s vertebra when chasing a ball or even simply jumping out of their bed? A dog unable to play without the danger of it choking or overheating? A dog stuck with a permanent rash driving it insane simply because those skin folds look pretty to some?
    Not me.
