Richard I can not say it enough how I am enjoying your channel. Your content is just awesome, your taste in music just sublime and your playing and tone world class. 👌👌👌 Love Russ Taff
Both Dann Huff and Paul Jackson Jr as usual played some pretty tasty rhythm parts on this track which also features another killer guitar solo by Dann Huff. I’ve always loved whenever there are two guitarists feature on a single track. To me It’s always interesting hearing the differences in their tone and playing. Especially when it comes to rhythm parts or guitar solos.
Medals was really one of the first CCM albums that leveraged the "new" CD media. Pumped drums, great singer of course in Russ Taff, and a fresh mix of Dan's guitar parts.
Vision I think was originally recorded and possibly written by Chris Eaton. But, being a huge Dann Huff fan since his days in Whiteheart, I like the Russ Taff version as well. Great job on these videos. New subscriber.
Wow! Havent heard this song in decades. I was playing bass in a Christian cover band back in the 80s and we did some songs off this album Medals. I recall the guitar player in our band really being ambitious in trying to capture these guitar tones. He ended up graduating from USC music program and had the killer rack like the Huff, Lukather guys and did much studio work. Thanks for bringing this song and album back to my attention. Its funny how much I took for granted these amazing musicans work back in the 80s. Now I treasure it... funny you are bringing us Christian artist with a Pinhead tshirt ;)
I have literally spent hours and hours on end playing this track and trying to recreate the "jangle parts" as closely as possible, to this day. No surprise that I love this video, so thank you, this is so down my alley! 😍
Kings of Leon's singer Caleb Followill always reminds me of Russ Taff as far as vocals. Russ's self-titled album that released after Medals is also great, produced by Jack Joseph Puig and has Dann Huff on guitars. The track "I Still Believe" a cover from the band The Call is a stand out. So cool to examine the guitar work on these albums...I'm obsessed with Dann's playing.
Great video. "Medals" is a great album indeed - top songs and playing. You are probably familiar with the writer of "Vision" - Chris Eaton from the UK who has a bunch of credits writing for other artists. Chris included his on version of "Vision" on his 1986 album of the same name. It has less of the guitars that Russ Taff's version but the album features virtually all the same players as "Medals" including Dann Huff, Paul Jackson Jr, Michael Landau and UK session guitarist Robin Smith, Nathan East, Neil Stubenhaus, Pino Palladino, Carlos Vega, and also produced by Jack Joseph Puig - go figure lol. Some killer tracks on this album with great guitar work from Dann, especially on Love For The Common Man, Don't Play Games, Golden Rule and Don't Underestimate My Heart. Basically all major CCM albums in the 80s featured the exact same players as "regular" albums, so it's really only the lyrical content and Christian market focus that sets them apart from the mainstream. Such a treasure trove of amazing music!
Hi Richard, great channel, been watching quite a few of your videos. Just wanted to let you know, I was at Glastonferry yesterday and was happily surprised to see you playing. Great band. That Tyler is a sweet guitar. Sounded great out front 👍🏻
Cheers from Texas! 🤘😺🤘 Thank you ever so much for creating this video! Yes, it’s in the lyrics, but I absolutely love this song! As a teenager, i never heard of Dann Huff, i just knew THAT guitarist was on point for the studio session. 🔥 Your videos have inspired me to grab my FM3 and double up the chorus for some long lost tones. Peace Michael
Holy Tights Batman, this guy can play! OMG I never thought I’d find anyone who appreciated Dann Huff as much as myself! First time hearing him was in the early 80’s on the first Whiteheart album, my friend Greg and I would sit on his car hood laying against the windshield and listen over and over again to this album (on cassette) We were both Toto fans and wondered who could play like Steve Luke! So talented and the way you play his stuff is amazing! Here is a solo that I think you should check out. It’s from Tim McGraw, When She Wakes Up and finds me gone. The song ends, then, wait for it, Dann Hugg goes crazy!!!!!!! I could listen to this solo until I died! Later dude, keep rocking us mere mortals!
@@RichardWatson my wife gets so tired of me talking about Dann, so it’s great to geek out on him here! Another guitarist that doesn’t get much love is the original guitarist from Cutting Crew. Ever check him out? “I Just Died In Your Arms Tonight?” All the tracks with him are great. Unfortunately he passed on, but he played on 1st 3 incredible albums. Worth checking out if you have not.
Hey Richard! You have to go check out The album Vision by Chris Eaton! Recorded with Dann Huff on guitars! He’s the one who wrote the song Vision but his whole album is amazing! Even better than Medals in my opinion! You gotta check it out!
I love all of Dann's rock stuff. Also very impressed with his guitar work on Reba's "The Heart Is A Lonely Hunter", superb tone and playing what suits the song. ruclips.net/video/dkhbLvUJwps/видео.html
Hey Richard...lets hear what you can create with showing how to get Steve Stevens marshall big guitar tone and recreate The Top Gun Anthem done by SS! Would love to hear it!!! His timing is so fluid yet not rushed. Just pure Big Rock Lead Guitar flow!
Tone 🔥🔥🔥
Thanks man!
Medals is a great album... remember when it came out. Thanks for keeping this music alive!
It's my pleasure, Brian- it was a golden era for pop music!

You're very kind, man- thank you!
You need to discover Tom Hemby, Nashville’s unsung hero
I shall check him out- thank you!

Yeah man! Some great tracks on that record!
If you like Dann Huff solos, do not miss the Kazu Matsui Project: Marine Fantasia from 1986.
Pretty nice popsongs with thrilling solos.

Thanks so much- really appreciate it!
Thanks for covering the CCM stuff that gets forgotten!
I'd love to see a lesson on creating rhythm parts like those that outline the chords.

You are always my goto resource for discovering hidden gems like this. And your playing is - as always - top notch. Thanks Richard!
Thanks so much, Chris!
Great record, I’m actually really good friends with Russ, he has some interesting stories about Jeff porcaro playing on that record
So awesome, man! It's a killer record!

Yup, I have something with Jerry on it coming up soon!

Ah that's awesome, man! It's a killer record that's full of Huff goodness!
Bloody hell Rich. You are such a phenomenal guitarist. Completely wasted teaching the likes of me 😂
Not at all, man! You're doing great!

You are "there", Richard.
A pleasure.
Thanks for your support, as always, my friend!
Dann Huff...he is on many Christian albums for years! Many...Amy Grant, Chris Eaton, Matthew Ward, Leslie Philips...many more!
Yeah man! I love his stuff with Amy Grant and Michael W Smith!
Thanks missed this album, back in the day, will check it out 😎👍
Sounds awesome Rich!
Thanks Glenn!

Chris Eaton’s album is amazing! Except that last song was ruined by a terrible mastering job, cause no one caught the flutter before releasing it.
That album is truly a great collection of songs with wonderful musicianship all through.
“What’s Number One?” By Boz Scaggs would be perfect for this series, I love the interplay between Huff and Landau!
That's two votes for this one already! Awesome!
@@RichardWatsonmake that three votes!
Very good ✌🏻
Thank you very much!
For a suggestion I'd like to hear What's Number One by Boz Scaggs. Really great track with great guitar tones and a very cool solo.
Great suggestion!

Hi, Love your channel! Where did you buy your classic black James Tyler guitar? I'm looking to buy one.
Hi Mathias! Thanks man! I got mine from GuitarGuitar in the UK, 8 or 9 years ago. They are wonderful instruments!
Hey, whr’d you get that black jacket you’re wearing on ( 2:44) I’ve been wanting one for a while??!!
Mine is just an old English biker jacket from the 70's. There's a US company called Straight To Hell that make similar ones though!
