If his illness was severe while in prison, plus the depression he might have experience for being shut out in the darkness for a year, I'm sure he might have had many of the Malaria mental consequences. If he suffered from delirium and psychosis he could have imagined hearing a voice in the ruins. It also says he had recurrent cases of Malaria through his life. Maybe his conduct disorder took him to the people with Leprosy getting infected himself within time. Leprosy also attacks the nerves. I'm sure he was a nice person who tried to help others, but I don't believe in his calling. I think it was all consequences of his lifetime illness. Joan of Arc is also now questioned if she really heard a voice or if she had schizophrenia.
