- A simple no-fuss way to add fermented feed to. your animals' diet! In this video, Matthias walks you through how he mixes up the feed for our chickens, the benefits of fermenting, and how long he lets it sit.
The chicken feed we purchase has finely milled nutrients added in, nutrients that would normally be wasted by the birds. However, when we add water it becomes more readily available to them and makes the rest of the grain more digestible too!

Does the fermentation process work best in any specific temperature range? I’m assuming the process would go faster, the warmer it is. And are there any signs to look for that it is over-fermented? Does this ever develop mold (which I assume would mean it is no longer safe for the animals to consume)? I appreciate the video! This is something I’ve just started looking into.
We've found that it works best in 70 degree temps but still use it all the time. If it's colder it takes a little longer and with warmer temps it's faster. We use ours up within 3-5 days so we've never seen it over fermented. It can develop a white color on top (not sure that I would call it mold) which is not a bad thing. Some people completely submerge the feed in water but we got tired of having to strain out the feed. We can get away from that by using it before it goes bad.
What ratio of dry feed and water do you use?
@juliacullom373 most tell you to enough water to cover the feed about 2". Fermenting not only reduces the cost but they digest more and get more nutrition from the feed. They also poop less and don't eat their poop like they do when there's undigested feed in it.
I would say I use 2/3 water to 1/3 feed. The feed will expand nearly twice of what it is when it's dry. Hope that helps!
Extra bonus, less poop. I've always fermented my feed. I'm wondering if you found a way to automatically feed it? I had to leave for a few days when my mother passed and could only think of dry feed.
That is something we haven't put the time into figuring out. I'm sure it can be done though!
Hai, I am from India, please explain name of the ingredients with quantities and procedure please
We buy a layer's ration feed mix and use about 2/3 water to 1/3 feed. Mix together and let it sit.
Thank you
