  • We're happy to announce that accredited online schools like James Madison High School have now been elevated from Tier II status to Tier I.
    So what does this mean? Previously, some high school seniors who planned to enter the military upon graduation had difficulty enlisting because the Department of Defense classified an online high school diploma as Tier II or "non-traditional". In order to enlist, a graduate would first need to complete 15 college credit hours.
    Additionally, for graduates of online schools like James Madison, there was a cap on the number of new recruits allowed from Tier II schools. Depending on the individual branch, only 1-5% of recruits each year could be from the Tier II division.

    @ deb Welch I wanted more information about the school. But since you stated your son attends JMHS do you know for sure that the military will accept JMHS diploma. I spoke with several recruiters and they stated that they would have to evaluate the school to see if they would allow anyone from the school to join the military? I'm just curious

    My son is a sea cadet and recently enrolled at JMHS to complete his senior year. I understand he will be tier 1 eligible. Any comments from those with like experiences?

      Everything I am reading says that 75% of your credits must come from the same place you received your high school diploma as the recruiters will call your high school to verify your credit hours. the best places to pose your questions would be to the DOD...and the DETC at detc.org. This is the minimum for the navy as far as I can find it. Minimum Requirements;
      Classroom Instruction. You must have successfully completed four academic years of classroom instruction. An academic year is considered a minimum of 120 hours of classroom instruction per academic course to earn a full credit. To earn a half-credit, you must have completed a minimum of 60 hours of classroom instruction.
      Credit Based. You must meet the minimum required credit requirements in all subjects for high school graduation as determined by the local school system. At a minimum, at least 75 percent of the credits earned towards high school graduation requirements, per academic year, must have been derived from a classroom based (student-teacher environment), instructor-led learning experience. An exception would be allowed in cases where 25% of credit earned through non-traditional instruction occurred in a single year excluding the senior year.
      Graduation Credential. The graduation credential must have been issued by the high school in which you were enrolled and attending at the time you completed the graduation requirements.
