My ex told me that a long time ago. Just apply any way. You’re already in the “no” because you haven’t applied, so what could it hurt? And that’s how I became a project manager for a construction company… was once of the best jobs I’ve ever had!
No experience before hand?
@@playboijay962 Nope! Just made my resume as professional and relevant as possible. I was in that interview lying my ASS off! Lol They did do a reference check, but I was already prepared for that. I had my aunt and mom (who are both seasoned professionals) give them the reference. That’s the company I worked for when Elon Musk was my boss.
Wait what! I need to do this now. I used to be construction for 8 years. You just gave me hope!

@@YousefTubebelieve it or not I remember there was a time where you could actually call a play about a job that was listed in the paper and ask them questions about it so you could even decide for yourself if you even want it to work there before you went through all the trouble of sending a resume or anything and once you did send a resume or put in an application you could actually call them or stop in in person and ask them if they looked at your resume or application yet and you could try to set up an interview I mean it used to be so much more civilized and then once they started with people applying for jobs online it just got crazier and crazier and crazier .
At first it wasn't so bad but once everything started to become more automated where they would use a program to scan and read the resumes is when it got really out of hand .
I once applied for a job claiming to have a degree. during my 2nd interview, they asked me to send a diploma. I told them since I had completed it online during covid I never got to walk the stage.... They told me just to send the diploma to them after receiving it in the mail. That never happened. I worked for that company for 6 months and saw the absolute incompetence of others. Left. I did the job better than those who had the degree...

I had an entire IT career spanning 1984-2024 with companies like HP, Northrup Grumman, Deloitte, making well over 100k with just certifications.
I got super lucky and was able to somehow get hired on for a position that requires a bachelors degree without even having a high school diploma. All I had was a stack of certifications I earned during Covid when I started. I’m going on my third year with the company and have since earned my high school diploma and now I’m currently working on my associates degree and planning to complete a bachelors after. I didn’t have to go back to school I chose to for my own personal fulfillment. It’s definitely possible to get a corporate job without a degree I’m living proof.
Can you share what those certifications were?
How exactly do you feel fulfilled in going back to school when you basically skipped it and got to where you needed to be without it? Are you going back maybe so you have something to fall back on if you can’t continue with your current job? Or maybe societal pressure? I know of I choose have skipped I would have

Damn im trying to find something but its nothing but low pay and long ass commutes. Should I just get a loan and go back to school? Nothing seems to be working

*AS LONG AS YOU KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING IN EVERY ASPECT AND YOU ACTUALLY GET THE JOB DONE, I SEE THAT WITH MY OWN EYES.*
People don't understand that the biggest advantage of going to college is NETWORKING. If you network through school functions, workshops, internships, clubs, and organizations, you will much more likely to get a good job after graduation. The job fairs at a good school are excellent opportunities to get work experience and references
I'd say certificates are more important if you want to get a job in IT. I help people with getting a job in IT and some have degree in art or... biology. 😊
Just because it happened to me, it happens to everybody is what I hear from this. Survivorship bias is a thing. If you look at statistics, most places still hire people with degrees and it makes a lot of difference for senior level positions, promotions, raises etc.
Great it worked for her but that’s a dangerous message to send to someone who can completely waste their prime years where they could have studied and got a degree but they didn’t and live to regret it later in life. If you are working in tech, a degree in any tech or stem field will probably help you in some way.
That being said, with how absurd the tuition fees are, I can understand the dilemma many people face when it comes to getting a college degree. I would recommend applying for scholarships and look for work study programs to help you instead of relying too much on predatory student loans. Good luck.
You make good points. However I do think there are a lot of people out there who take loans for overpriced universities, and then don't do internships/part time jobs etc to get experience in undergrad. Then they seem to struggle afterward.
One thing I really appreciated my Uni (no-frills state school) did was to work hard to get people opportunities for internships, work study, part time positions, etc.
The paradox is that you don’t really need a degree to perform in an entry or mid-level role in tech. What matters more than anything is experience.
Getting your foot in the door is easier with a degree, I’m not going to deny it. But it is definitely possible for anyone without a degree to do so. I have done it. It just takes persistence, a good resume, and communication skills. If you knock on enough doors, people will grant you interviews.
With that being said, if you want to get a degree, it is best to first get a job in the field, then work towards a degree online while you are working in said field. That way, once you have completed your degree, you have at least 5 years of real work experience on top of it. As an added bonus, you will take on less student loan debt, or none at all, in order to get your degree.
We have a 14 year at my job who's already finished his masters degree, and a 17 year old who's worked his way up to engineering specialist without going to college. There's no degree for genius.
I think these shorts are not accurate. Yea the non-degree thing works for like 20 percent of people. Majority will need education, I tried the non-degree route and it did not work at all.
Nope. Not inaccurate. You get out what you put in. It's not easy, but it's definitely possible. Also, college does not equal education. You can be plenty educated without ever stepping foot on a college campus.
@DegreeFree My comment was focused on the majority population, not a minority. I looked it up about 25% have IT jobs without a degree.
I got the degree lol didn’t want to be stuck in warehouse jobs or dead end jobs for the rest of my life.
@@DegreeFree it is true that even companies like Google and Apple are dropping degree reqs. However, it depends on the job.
If you don’t mind me asking, what is the job? If it’s web dev (especially frontend/marketing) then it makes sense however, working in something like Embedded, OS, Infrastructure, or any AI/ML, those are much less likely to hire without requisite coursework. You still learn on the job, but you need the right background to be able to.
@@mecanuktutorials6476All developers get paid to learn on the job. That’s basically what you’re doing. That said, you can’t get dev job not knowing anything and learn on the job. You need to already be able to write programs and be able to solve data structures & algorithms problems.
A degree in CS should be mandatory. Physicians, accountants and others have a degree which attests they have the minimum knowledge to perform their duties.
"I have no anything from a college."
Just like what a typical degree free person would say.
Get a degree if you can, just makes life easier.
*THIS IS HOW PEOPLE GOT THE SAYING, "it's not what you know, it's WHO you know." THEY WERE TALKING ABOUT THE WORKERS INSIDE BEING REFERENCES REFERRING YOU INSIDE!*
"You don't have to listen to that" and "you'll be called back more often than you realize" is just lying to yourself.
Depends heavily on the carreer field. Always listen to the market and tune your skills accordingly
I have a degree in Fine Arts and have spent 6+ years employed fulltime in the IT sector in central Europe. Focus on your first technology-related role to gain experience. Once in you just build skills and accelerate your career.
Meanwhile I know people with a BS or MS and 15 years experience that can't get a call back lol.
They must be doing something wrong
No degree and I've been working as an IT Coordinator for 10+ years. Just a quick learner, fixer, and great at building vendor relationships.
I have a BA and lots of experience, but no certs. AI generated job descriptions coupled with algorithm screening is keeping a lot of qualified people out of even being seen.
Gotta get a degree in FU University
Heres a hypothetical situation. Multiple people fight for the same position and the business can only hire 1 or a couple people. And they need a tie breaker. Some people or 1 person has a degree(s). Who do you think they’re gonna hire?
The person who brings most value. Give them something better than a degree.
Well depends- do they all have experience? For example, I work in IT, and a degree can be valuable but quite often experience trumps everything, or the ability to be self-taught. I've met admins that actually look down on degrees compared to certs because most people who get certs teach themselves which is more valuable than most people give it credit for.
They will hire the person with more relevant experience or the person who has a certification that is directly targeted to that specific job profession vs a general 4 year degree.
For example a Sr Business Analyst position.
Candidate 1 has a 4 year degree in Business Management which is a general business degree which has courses applying to business analysis and project management
Candidate 2 has no degree but 4 years experience for that specific job with a CBAP certification which is specific to that job and the certification requires a minimum of 4 years experience in the field to qualify to even take the exam.
Who do you think gets hired? Candidate 2 100%
The whole point of this video was to say that sure you won’t have the chances that degree holders do, but you still definitely have a chance and if you have a chance, then it’s only a matter of applying to tons of places
I have no college degree either, but managed to build a fortune 500 company by devoting 25 years of my life to one basic principle. I'm worth over 15 million dollars now.

The white collar job market is rough right now. Blue collar skilled trades (electricians, specialized mechanics, plumbers, HVAC, etc) inversely have one of the best job markets the industry has ever seen.
Yeah but why do y'all act like the trades start paying well up front? You will still dish out thousands of $ to go trade school and acquire technical certification. It will also probably take anywhere from 5-7 years of steady apprenticeship and work experience developing the necessary skills and mastery to FINALLY make good $.
Like no one becomes a pro Electrician or Plumber in 2 years making six figure. It's not easy for the clumsy and book smart people either.
@@GOD999MODE Yes apprenticeships are important, but it’s worth getting the experience for someone interested in it. After 5 years I make 83 an hour working as a union electrician for PG&E. There are many schools and courses to choose from. And there degrees are recognized by all employers. What these schools do is teach you what you NEED to know to be prepared for the job. Where as traditional colleges try to pour as much information into you as possible so you fail and have to stay for another year and pay them more money. Depending on your knowledge that you already have and what course you take, you could probably get a bachelors degree in eight months, but it can take as much as five years although that's pretty rare and only in very specific courses like level two or three engineering most courses will take two years with minimal knowledge. Hope it helps.
@@helechoale1979 are you planning on moving to america i only have knowledge about U.S system Canadian system and some of the german system. other than that im not much of help when in comes to india 😅
Unemployed for a year, and I have two tech degrees. Lol.
Selling false hope. This is NOT the norm, especially when even many well degreed and well cert-ed ppl can't get callbacks.
Sorry, bud that's a skill issue. People who have a degree take jobs for granted. I have no degree or rather I could not finish it for financial reasons. No longer in a position to continue studying without earning money. What degree does is certifies you of something to be capable of doing, But is that the only way?
No. You make projects solve problems in the industry contribute to open source. And whats possible now which wasn't before are "certifications" not "certificates" there is a difference you are gonna have to google if you dont know. I'm going to Data Science Im going to go for AWS Database/Machine Learning/Data Analytics And IBM Data Science Professional Certifications and Google Data Engineer/Machine Learning certifications and Azure Certifications and so many more that more than qualifies you for 2+ years. What are they gonna say
"even though you have experience working on projects and solving problems and these exams that you cleared certifies you from different cloud systems which generally recommended for professionals with atleast 2-3 years of experience working with their respective systems, we are gonna have to pass up on you "just" because you dont have a degree"? When people as incompetent as you are sitting around with degrees does it really matter?
What you said about it not being a norm is absolutely correct! But why would you want to be a NORM? I swear degree holders are legit people with pacifers in their mouth, legit scared of doing anything out of the ordinary.
From the beginning of IT up until 5 years ago mahbe it was the norm to get into IT without a degree but this days it’s different. If you’re new and don’t have a degree it will be hard finding a job and once you do your salary will be like $29k-$32k
@@Me-eb3wvso basically I'm fucked
Get certificates online. Is as good as degrees & u learn more that way tbh
my bro got hire 120k compiata+ with a requirement to get AWS certification in 2 weeks. all he did was shardow an employee doing aws for 4 weeks from previous job. he just got his first pay check.@@Me-eb3wv

I have 3 trade liscences a bachelors in business admin. Applied to over 3000 places landed 3 interviews and one of the interviews wasnt even somthing i applied for or was applicable to my background. Somthing isnt adding up and im considering getting a masters in engineering or going for my doctorate so i am someone you LITTERALLY CANNOT TURN AWAY. I just got fired from a construction job i had no experience in and im seriously considering just offing myself because im not going to tolerate living a life where im never happy and only hopeful. Im tired of feeling like im not worth anything while i see the potential to change the world as a whole within myself. Im tired of life falling so short of my expectations.
You're not alone in how you're feeling, Dan. Take heart and don't lose hope. You are so valuable and worthy of happiness. Try networking with friends/colleagues and see what's up. In this day and age, you have to know people that know people. Also, location is important!
I’m in a similar boat.
Don’t give up man. Keep going.
You have the education but you most likely lack the social network. It doesn't hurt to make friends and party with people in college, or ask for you parents if they know someone.
This reminded me if a buddyboyo who had 3 trade certs but can't find a job on those bec he doesn't know anyone from those fields. Ended up a sewer boy since he knew someone there, it pays well but is hard, heavy, dangerous, dirty, disgusting.
I have been feeling exactly the same. Keep going. Eventually one day you will see all your hard work pay off.. Rome wasn’t built in a day
Don't fkn give up, you re gonna make it and look back on this feeling and glad you stuck it out. Just keep networking and knocking on doors. It'll happen I promise
Same thing happened to me. Cybersecurity testing job at Intertek no degree.
Awesome!!! That's amazing! What were you doing before that?
Did you have experience? I’m finding it hard to get my foot in the door
@@itzlexxii I was about to finish high school. I had gotten the Google IT Certification and taken a bunch of CS classes from a local community college. They occasionally posted jobs on their job board, I didn't even apply to a bunch of jobs, 3 max. It was a pleasant surprise when I got in. Right now I am in college, and I work in the Summer and Winter.
@tarmus6908 How much are you making at Intertek?
@@isaiahj3968 Part time 27 an hour.
Nobody in tech has cared about degrees for at least two decades unless you apply to a position that does actual research. This is common knowledge.
Nepotism is a lot more prevalent than ppl think.
I have no certification but still have a job. Certification is a pass for getting jobs. No certification doesn't mean you can't get that job. Make the company want to take you in with your skills and experience you have. Lack of IQ doesn't mean you lose. What you have to do is just work harder and believe in yourself. 👍👍
Some specific jobs are very stubborn and don’t care unless if you have a degree(s)
career advisors type whatever you claim
Damn I needed to read that.
I just finished an interview today for a position that makes $60k remote working three days on three days off. Rotating Wednesday’s. I have no degree or certification. Over the last two years I busted my ass grinding and learning.
I believe the interview went well. Didn’t ask me if I had a degree or cert. rapid fired questions instead.
I felt the imposter syndrome but also surprised myself. I’m hoping I can get an offer
That’s just pretentious, you need a degree because you will never get QOL workplace, and you can never be a jumper. I doubt you will ever know that hypocritical woman
@@waylonbraswell8445so you got the job with no certs, no degree, no nothing? doubt it
It’s so many things missing from this clip, what job did you get? What certification did you get?
Exactly she easily could be working for some company that really isn’t going to check on her qualifications even if this did work in IT which it doesn’t you also gotta consider people hire people they want around them and enjoy seeing
Yes, because I'm curious about how frequently Black people experience this.
Box checker.
The boss just wanted to beat it up. 😂
Have you seen the kids coming out of Universities these days? I'd hire a degree-free person first most days
Especialy in the USA in some fields if a person has no degree and has experience/portfolio, they can work for less because they dont have to account in for the student loan.
yeah she didn’t realize she is the diverse hiring, you ain’t getting any job without a degree in tech if you are a guy. 😂
I did in 2022, but we dont have communists in our company, we are in eastern europe and we dont do diversity hiring except if government pays heavily, which it doesnt in 99% of the time. We also divided our company into multiple companies to avoid the law for founding unions. 😂 If you want something, you are not a pussycat but you literally walk into the CEO's Office. Which you almost never have to do because managers také good care for the most of the agenda and you literaly talk with the CEO during launch breaks both about things related and not related to the Job.
However american companies in here do have diversity hire programs and oh boy, it shows...
Im sure being cute helps.
I was going to comment but the rage built up inside and all I'll say is this: you got lucky.
Bitter
Don’t hate the player, hate the game. That’s why all my bosses have been incompetent d bags, but I’m used to it
You definitely still commented though 😂
Life isn’t an anime, chill out
Yeah but you can't get lucky if you don't try
She met the DEI requirement
I take my five month certification program for cyber security by a friend who is teaching a class and he promises that I'm going to get a job that pays $70k--$100k above. Someone I know doesn't have a degree and landed a job that pays $100k because he passed the interview. That's why people shouldn't always rely on a degree. This changes the game, and this changes lives.
One issue is even I do it but shotgunning resumes. It’s so time consuming that shotgunning is easier but if you find jobs that align with your skills tailor it a bit and you get more calls. That being said the application process is trash right now
I’m a service manager who knows absolute nothing about cars. I’m great with people and service, but building estimates, ordering parts, all things I do and do well but am clueless. Confidence and hard work builds bridges.
For most positions, the education requirements companies post are what they consider to be the ideal candidate. There are a few exceptions of course, such as healthcare and teaching. If you do not meet all of a company's requirements, it never hurts to apply anyway. I was always told to ignore those requirements.
The requirements to apply for a job were written on the offer letter?
Ikr 😂😂
No shes saying in the offer letter she got thats what it said they wanted. She was not that but was still offered the job.
@@matthill2957 I said "the job requirements were on the offer letter" and you said "no, on the offer letter were the job requirements "

Many of my jobs required a 4year degree. I am a high school dropout
Awesome! What do you do now? And what were some of the other jobs you had?
Most employers will hire someone who meets at least 50% of the “requirements” in a job listing. A degree has a weight of maybe 10%.
That's called being a DEI hire. I have some females in my department who have a very low understanding of the job but since they always laugh at the boss's jokes and stay up his ass all the time, you would think they are the top performers.
The only reason I got a degree is because the Air Force paid for it for me to become a 2 Lt. Otherwise I never would have went to college.
Nope don’t do this if you don’t have connections. They take less than 30 secs to review a resume and if the recruiter doesn’t see a degree they won’t even care to consider you. This works when the actual manager does the recruitment but in many cases they hire someone else to do it.
