      A H Thank you I'm glad you enjoyed the video, and even better to hear you're thinking of applying to study the subject now too! I hope you enjoy it :) In terms of London I remember SOAS being quite good, but honestly it's been so many years now since I applied I can't remember, and for sure the rankings and courses would have changed in the meantime. Your best bet is to go to UCAS and search Social Anthropology (or maybe just anthropology) and see what it returns you. Best of luck!

    Hello Guy, I just wanted to thank you for your brilliant videos. Having been to Tanzania myself some years ago made me even more interested in your introductory videos. Yet, the most coincidental fact is, that I have applied (and offered a place) at Man. Uni for a BA. in Social Anthropology and Philosophy!
    Watching these videos really sparked my feeling of having applied for the right course, though I still am awaiting decisions from other unis. However, the courses I have applied to do not incl. Soc. anthropology.. Now, it was not my intention make my comment look like a novel page, but I have a lot of questions. Would you mind if I asked you some?

    Hi! I applied to Durham to do International relations, but they came back to me this week and said that I was unsuccessful for that, but would alternatively offer me the chance to study anthropology. This video has been really helpful in teaching me about it, because I literally had no clue as to what anthropology was.
    Quick question: Does politics/international relations get covered in social anthropology? Because Id still like to cover it in my course.

    • @GDWhittaker
      @GDWhittaker  5 лет назад

      Hi Amira. Sorry to hear you have been unsuccessful :( I went to Durham on an open day when I was deciding which university to go to and I really liked Durham -- the course and the department seemed really good! However, I THINK they do a mix of social and biological anthropology, so just make sure 1) what exactly you'll be studying (social anthro? bio anthro? or both?) and 2) you know what you would be happy doing?
      Anyway, to answer your question, it depends on the course. In my Soc Anthro degree (at Uni of Manchester) yes we did a module called Political and Economical Anthropology which was fascinating and I really loved it -- but it was only one module. In Anthropology you can study so many things! That's why it's important to have a look at what each university, and each course, offers. I hope that helps, and best of luck! I'm glad my video was of use :)

      Hola Valeria! Un abrazo de Inglaterra :) Amazing! I am sure you are going to love it :) jaja, it's a long story, it was kind of by accident actually. It was a very good decision :3

    What is the difference between sociology and sociol anthropology ?

    • @GDWhittaker
      @GDWhittaker  6 лет назад +1

      Hi there! Thank you for watching and liking my video. Well, I may not be the best person to ask but I will tell you what I know. Both these subjects are very similar first of all, the main difference I am aware of is that Sociology looks more specifically and Western Society whereas Social Anthropology studies mankind everywhere. Secondly, sociology is more quantitative in its study methods whereas Social Anthropology is more qualitative. So a sociologist would do more surveys, questionnaires, collect data and create graphs etc whereas Social Anthropologists do more participant observation, make notes and write books etc. I hope that helps

      The 1000k question! haha. I usually say (jokingly) that "Soc. Anth. comes out of life and Socio. comes out of death".:) In many ways the 'line' between them is very thin, almost non-existent, as they feed off each other- especially at theoretical level. They have evolved at different times, years and paces, but there have been periods in history were they converged and both mutually progressed and benefited (from that interdisciplinary context) as sciences - as a result (ie. 1940's-50s with symbolic interaction (Agency v System/Structure debate which in itself was a major factor in the advancement of Social Psychology; and in the late 1960's and 70's due to Social Change(Social Rights Movements, Feminism, Black Activitism, Post-Colonialism, even Hippie and Punk cultures) and the 'crisis of representation'/ reflexivity within SA.
      Whilst SA originally tended to face more towards societies and cultures outside Western urban spaces, Sociology did the reverse (urban western spaces where class (an any social aspects related to the concept) were studied). I could be here forever and ever regurgitating more about this , but all I can say is that both disciplines are extremely dynamic and deep. At the same level as Philosophy (which I find very connected to both) - being all very Interdisciplinary in nature.That's the type of mindfuck (positive one I might add) that people are getting into if they opt to study SA and Soc at university. Game changer in many ways. It never gets boring! :)

    • @GDWhittaker
      @GDWhittaker  4 года назад

      @@alexfostes4021 haha, damn Alex nice reply. I can certainly sympathise with the "That's the type of mindfuck" you get into if you study these subjects. But as you say, it's a great one :)

    Hi, thank you so much for your video! Very informative! I am thinking of doing a Mphil in Social Anthropology but my background is law. I wonder if there are any introductory books you could recommend me to read? Do you think this subject has any relevance to law?

    • @GDWhittaker
      @GDWhittaker  4 года назад

      Hi Natalie, sorry for the late reply. Small Places Big Issues is a nice intro book, but off the top of my head I can't remember more. I think on the first video on one of the comments I have gone into more detail about books and resources to further explore the topic. In terms of relevance to law, social anthropology is relevant to EVERYTHING, but yes I think the mix of S.A. and law could be interesting. It would definitely give you a different perspective on things, which would help you stand out in your field.

  • @Global_identity_and_travel

    I don't agree about the assumption that there is no normal... if we are asking 'what does it mean to be human?' is like saying 'what do we all share in common' so there must be some underlying assumption that there is something normal/shared between us. Isn't it?

    • @GDWhittaker
      @GDWhittaker  4 года назад +1

      Hi Aushra. What we have in common doesn't necessarily make something normal. Like the example I gave in video 1, people all over the world build houses, but how they do so differs. So, in this case we could say to build a house is something we have in common, but since no one builds them the same way or agrees on what a house should look like and how it should function, there's no set 'normal'. Variety and difference is what makes us human (even within things we seemingly have in common) :) I hope that helps.

    • @Global_identity_and_travel
      @Global_identity_and_travel 4 года назад

      @@GDWhittaker There are underlying assumptions of what is normal for people. We all need food, we all need love to develop and grow. So there are some needs we can say are norms. There are other things like art or architecture if you will, beauty, this an be subjective and it's ok to agree to disagree. It is not the case for everything.

    • @GDWhittaker
      @GDWhittaker  4 года назад +1

      @@Global_identity_and_travel Hi Aushra, I agree that all humans need food for example, but how humans eat food, what they eat, and why they eat it, varies not only between continents and countries, but sometimes between towns and cities, even families. The same goes for love. For example, some societies and cultures kiss to show love, others don't. And that's fine, it's just a different way of doing things. An anthropologist would then try to understand why this different exist, how does each culture/group define 'love', why they express their version of 'love' in the way they do etc. Therefore, there's no 'normal', only different. Does that make sense?

    The idea of helium for example, is another cultural construct. I'm not saying that the thing helium represents does not exist; but our physical imagination of helium (as in schoolbooks) are a cultural construct. Science is a cultural paradigm.
    Am I right?

    • @GDWhittaker
      @GDWhittaker  6 лет назад

      Hey Denis. I'm not quite sure I understand what you're saying, but yes science is a social/cultural paradigm. It is just one way of seeing and understanding the world, it is not the 'correct' or only way.
