- Hey guys! - I was TIG welding this sculpture at the beginning but recently switched to a spool gun and switched up some settings on my Miller 211 so that my welds would penetrate better.
Using a spool gun to weld aluminum can be tricky. When you are welding aluminum, having the proper welder settings and techniques will help you make better welds and increase your production. I'm sharing my settings and techniques for welding aluminum in this video. Thanks for watching.

I have that same gun and i dont have to take the drive wheels out to feed the wire. Its shredding the wire because you have your drive wheel tension to tight. The hole on top of the gun is were you adjust it. All the problems you listed are from user error, not the machine.
I've been running one for a few years and I've never taken the wheel out. Straighten the wire and it will feed right through 99% of the time.

Just a thought here, and I may not be correct, but I have some experience in aluminum spool gun welding. First, make sure your drive rolls groove size match the wire diameter that you are using. Second, usually knurled drive rolls are to be used with a steel flux-core electrode. Use a Vee groove for solid wire steel electrode, and finally, a U- groove drive roll is commonly used for aluminum wire electrode. A U-groove drive roll usually will not mark up the surface of a very soft material such as aluminum. The issue that you described in the video related to the roughed surface of the electrode can cause feeding problems through the contact tip due to the use of a knurled drive roll.

In your 6ish min part you say that your tac welding because it give you penetration from the back out to top that same consistency can be adjusted in your settings, if you take a few more moments you can fine tune it and your weld will be followed all the way through

Which model of spool gun is this? The Miller 100 or 150? I just picked up a 150 for my Miller 211, and am looking forward to learning how to use it. Thank you for the pointers.
I have never had to remove drive wheels on my spoolmate.

You don’t have to take the wheel off.
What wire brand are you using ? .030 or .035 ? what brand have you tried ?
Lincoln and liquid Air make good wire...030 usually

Wrong….don’t move the wheels…just straighten the wire and it will feed through. The liner is a PTE material so it will feed smoothly …..read your instructions manual. Change your tips with every spool….Miller makes great stuff learn your machine and spool gun.
