    Thankyou for making this series. As an old Audio Buff whose been away from audio for a few years it was a great refresher.
    It’s a pleasant change to find someone on the internet that has significant experience but who doesn’t talk down to others or exude arrogance (like on some other channels) .
    Keep up the good work, your passion shines through. 👍🏻

    Thanks for a great no-nonsense series, Tarun. Glad to hear an honest appraisal of DVD/Blu-Ray players as CD transports! I picked up an old Pioneer DV-575A earlier this year for just £18 - it sounds impressive, even via its internal DAC, and it can handle SACD and DVD-Audio too. Hope to hear more from you soon!

    I like your 3x rule, which when I have applied (by accident) that rule I have been very happy with the result. I went from £300 speakers to £1500 priced speakers (on sale as packaging was damaged, sold at £750) and was very happy.

    I still like playing individual CDs, at least when I'm sitting down and really listening to music. The whole process becomes much more immersive, because you're compelled to listen to the entire album of the artist's work. When I'm streaming music I feel more inclined to switch around and through tracks that at that moment I find boring, so I am less likely to broaden my knowledge of a given performer. The ritual is similar to playing vinyl, which I also enjoy, but with much less work involved.

    Great video, Tarun; I found it useful. Another reason for using a lower cost Blue-Ray player rather than a expensive CD player is that you can expect to replace it multiple times during the life of your system. I had my previous system almost 30 years (Kenwood components) and while the pre-amp, power amp, equalizer, receiver, and cassette player all lasted the entire time, I had to replace the CD player about 4 or 5 times during that period. My current system has a Denon CD player and it's starting to lose its little electronic brain. When it finally gives up, no more expensive players for me! Best regards, John.

    Last night and today I watched these 8 videos and they are fantastic and worth the time to invest if you are into this hobby. The more knowledge one has in this hobby the less likely you will waste your money and invest more wisely. My next step forward is not upgrading equipment but room acoustics but only on a small scale as it has to be wife friendly as our lounge room is my listening room. A good title for this series >>>> "Room for Improvement".
    Tarun, another idea you might want to let viewers send you photos of there system with a small paragraph to describe their setup, I am very interested in what others own and their audio journey. There are some very clever people in this hobby and I would like to learn more from you but also from others.
    Keep up the great work my friend and your channel is growing very fast.

    Another very useful video for beginners like me. I have all my cd collection as MP3 files (the days of expensive storage), which makes me weep. I'm old but can easily tell the difference, so only use the Plex server which contains them when I'm working. I still buy cds, at least of my favourites. If you live in a rural area you're aware of the fragility of broadband connections, though my over-air connection holds up well. Power outages are not uncommon but I have 20 KW battery capacity in the barn, generators and cds- there will always be music!

    Great series and appreciate your efforts in making this content. I bought my first separates back in the late 90s which served me well for about 10 years but as life got in the way I lost some of the essential components of the original system. I'm now in a position to start again with a new amp to pair with my old B&W CDM1 and am getting up to date with what's current. This series has refreshed my understanding of Hifi and I feel better prepared to get out there and explore new systems.
    I like your thinking about the 3x rule and the pairing of speakers to certain brands. Rotel seems to be used a lot with B&Ws but i'm intrigued with the current Audiolab kit that's out there. Having seen your review on the 6000a, would there be much point upgrading to the 8300a or should I explore other brands around the £1k mark?
    Maybe you could expand this series with an overview of which speaker-amp pairings are common?
    Keep the great content flowing :)

      There are a lot of options out there and it all comes down to personal taste. Certain combinations have always worked well together. The CDM1’s are a little in the cool side. Traditionally the warmer sounding Arcam amps have been a good pairing with B&W speakers. Thank you for watching and sharing your experiences 😊👍

    I think you might be on to something with your financial summary of diminishing returns in speakers. I don't have an awful amount of experience, as have found Hi-Fi retailers to be less than keen to demonstrate. Sevenoaks expected me to buy some £850 Kef's without a quick demo. In fact he looked at me as if I were mad when asking and other places have cited the need to make a special appointment during the week (inconvenient). On one occasion though I got a demo of the Cambridge Audio range Circa 2014. Started off with Minx BMR speakers. The Single BMR speakers @ £80 and small sub @£250 sounded okay at first hearing, then he switched to the double BMR @£130 and the larger matching sub @ £350 and after hearing you wouldn't want the single drivers (this kind of breaks the treble it theory, but we are lower down the market than you're anticipating) we then heard the stand mount Aero 3 @ £300 and they were noticeably better again. Finally we had the Floor standers @ £600 by now the returns were less significant, but still audible without scrutiny. Now there was also the Aero 6 Max at £900 N/A to demo. Non Glossy speakers were off the menu according to the Mrs and I was after Dolby Atmos, so discreet ceiling speakers (Mrs) were also necessary and they did a matching range. We ended up with 3x Min21, 4x C46 1x X301 and a AV receiver. You may rightly consider this crap, but I have other expensive hobbies, had just purchased a detached property and was in the process of doubling it's size and I'm not a NBA player :). To be fair films and music sounded okay - probably lacking in the middle but you get used to how things sound. A few years later and I have the Aero 6 Max. They are treble the cost of the Aero 3 speakers (fairer to compare against over the bookshelf Minx) , unfortunately since I didn't hear them together at the time I can't say by how much, but it's better, like a cinema according to the Mrs and I wonder quite what you'd have to get to improve on them (not going to) and how noticeable it would be. I think it needs to be really obvious... hence I think you are probably right, triple the budget for the obvious gains. it's not like other technology where 4 years same budget brings massive returns. Sorry if this was too longwinded and contains spurious boring info :)

    Tarun, thank you for this series. Although I have watched a number of you videos, and commented, I missed this series. I found it extremely useful and informative. I am in the process of changing from my old separates (Audiolab pre/power plus CD and Rega phono with Mission 751's). What I get confused about is the use of DAC's. In you final video you mention the Chord Mojo but the Aurelic has an internal DAC ? I am considering a Naim Uniti Atom but are you advocating using an external DAC with the Naim or is the integrated DAC sufficient?
    I assume my Audiolab 8000C and power 8000P are now outdated and require upgrading? I would appreciate your views. Thanks, Nick

    • @abritishaudiophile7314
      @abritishaudiophile7314  4 года назад

      Hi Nick, the Auralic internal DAC is okay but nothing special, that is why I use Mojo.
      I am not sure what you want to achieve with your upgrade but it seems to me that your speakers are the obvious weak link in your system. Your Audiolab 8000 C and 8000 P will fare very well with modern day amplifiers including the Naim Unity Atom. Unless you want the convenience of a one box solution, I would stick with your amplifiers and upgrade your speakers first.
      Wharfedale make some very good, well priced speakers that should be a good tonal match for your Audiolab. Both brands are owned by the same parent company and I know from first hand personal experience that there is a good scenery between Audiolab electronics and Wharfedale speakers. Of course, in the end your choice of speaker comes down to your own personal taste. You can then add a decent streamer like the Innous Zenith mini and in time upgrade the internal DAC for an external DAC like the Chord Mojo or Cutest.
      I hope this helps and good luck 😉

      @abritishaudiophile7314  4 года назад +1

      Hi Brynybach, this series was very much aimed at beginners putting together their first hifi system. The reality is that a Blu-ray player makes a decent cd transport, especially the better quality Blu-ray players. People starting out should not be spending money on dedicated transports IMHO. It is different for someone who is trying to squeeze the last bit of performance out of an already very good system.
      Personally, I didn’t notice a great deal or difference when comparing my £200 Sony Blu-Ray player as a cd transport to my £1,500 Exposure CD player. However, the Exposure is 20 years old and uses a Philips transport, well regarded at the time but things may have moved on since then. I would try the Denafrips Avatar and see what difference it makes. I am expecting to get the Ares II in for review shortly. I will see how that goes and maybe it might be worth speaking to them about getting the Avatar in next so that I can revisit the transport discussion from a seasoned audiophile perspective.

I got it half price when the new range came out and i choose it because it plays SACDs and has a co-ax digital output that I can connect to my DAC. DB Poweramp is a use bit of software, glad it worked out for you. Thank you for your support and I hope you tune in to my next series. Tarun

    Hi Tarun, I am using a RME Babyface Pro with my PC running Foobar - I used Foobar to rip the CDs.
    Can I improve on this with different software or hardware at all?

      Hi MaestroMusician, I haven’t used Foobar but I think it supports lossless formats such as FLAC and WAV. If you are happy with the sound it wouldn’t change it.

    Chord mojo... can you please describe the sequence of component to your speakers using this DAC. My head is spinning with all the different options. Finding a Pre-Amp with all the options I want + wanting the ability to have home theater setup with the two main speakers driven by higher end amps for hifi listening is proving to be a nightmare....

      Hi Abhi, my set up is
      Auralic Aries Mini Streamer
      Chord Mojo DAC
      Exposure XXI Preamp
      Exposure XVIII Monoblocks
      Or Hegel H160 Integrated amplifier
      ProAc Response 1SC Speakers
      REL Strata III Subwoofer
      Abhi, what is your setup and what do you want to achieve? If you let me know, I may be able to give you a couple of pointers.

      @@abritishaudiophile7314 Thanks for your reply!
      Basically similar to what you have, except be able to have a 5.1 surround sound system in between, via the AV receiver
      The two main stereo speakers + Sub would be through a higher quality amp like Hegel, Music Fidelity or tube amp... so that I'm able to listen to high quality audio, and then switch to a movie with 5.1.

    • @abritishaudiophile7314
      @abritishaudiophile7314  4 года назад +1

      Hi Abhi, the Hegel would work as it has a Home Theatre bypass but so do many others stereo amplifiers these days. You may know this but I will run through how to use a stereo amplifier with a AV receiver.
      Find a decent AV receiver with preouts for the front channels.
      Use the AV receiver to power the centre and effect channels.
      Connect the front Left and Right preouts from the AV receiver to the Home Theatre input of the stereo amplifier.
      Adjust the gain on the centre channel so it matches the stereo amplifier.
      Good luck 😉

    Great video's, it is good to get advice from someone who is British. Most people on RUclips are American. Can I plug my phone into a amp or DAC and I wanted to burn my CDs onto a harddrive then put them on a memory card and put it in my Samsung galaxy s10 is this possible. Thanks

    • @abritishaudiophile7314
      @abritishaudiophile7314  4 года назад

      Hi Paul as long as the DAC has a USB input you should be able to connect your phone. I use a software package called dB Poweramp to rip my CDs. It checks the quality of the rips. Remember to rip in lossless FLAC or WAV formats.

    There are many reasons that vinyl is having a slight resurgence [percentage wise]. It's about the playing-music experience. Swiping and selecting doesn't add to the playing and enjoying music experience. Having 50,000 albums on a NAS or millions on streaming is too much to wrap our heads around. I prefer CD. A disc can be played thousands of times without any loss [unlike vinyl]. One can read the liner notes and it is a physical media. Placing beloved tunes that took years to discover into a cheap, plastic and flimsy drawer of a BlurRay player detracts from said experience.

    Well I have a ton of equipment... nothing stellar, and listen to music every day ... vinyl a lot, and anyone of I think 9 fully set up turn tables (and record players... including 78 RPM) of various vintage... from the 1950 to today... have lots of old record and new... I play CDs too, have fat too many from over the years to ignore them.. .. and finally often I listened to Amazon music some times right from some better amazon devices... sound better than you might think.. and often via the headphone Jack on the echo to the reciever... vintage and new ... Aux input... it does not sound bad at all. I have done my phone on the same way... headphone jack to rca aux. Now I realize that may not be great... but I know an awful lot of people who listen to a lot of music and do that too. I do not ever really understand was DACs is and how to use it ... and I don't feel alone. So to me that would be an interesting place for you to go some day... for us frequent but extremely unsophisticated "audiophiles" .. maybe Junior Audiophiles... but we are quite old... including a discussion of the headphone cable attachment... you did not even mention that possiblity when you talked about bluetoothing your phone.... I have done that too. Pain though... phone likes to do other things too and interrupt me a bit.. You are a treasure!!

    The computer based software Audirvana
    audirvana.com/product/
    and Roon
    roonlabs.com/
    make finding and playing back a digital jukebox stored on a PC or NAS very easy.
    VLC (www.videolan.org/vlc/index.en-GB.html) is free and plays back all audio and vidio formats. It also has control over latency, an issue with lip sych on movies and speakers with DACs in them. If you organise your file structure into categories e.g. type (pop, rock, classical) and by artist or composer drilling down to finding an album is not difficult.

    USB to stereo analogue output sound cards and DACs are easy to find e.g. Yamaha WXC50 streamer/preamp or WXA50 with power amp.
    There is less choice for USB to 5+1 or 7+1 analogue although most PCs offer a 5+1 configuration from 3.5mm sockets and the built in sound cards. External sound cards are preferred as they reduce and even remove the transmission of internal PC noise to the speakers. Terratec DMX6fire USB and current model AUREON XFIRE8.0 HD offer surround sound analogue output and stereo TOSLINK and coaxial digitial output.
    The TOSLINK and coaxial feed stereo to a preamp or speakers fitted with TOSLINK (e.g. AVI DM10, Devialet Phantoms) or RCA digital inputs (e.g. AVI DM10, Meridian digital active speakers). AVI DM10 also have stereo USB without the need for other devices or interfaces.
    Terratec DMX6fire USB provides surround sounds to a power amplifier or analogue active speakers with volume control from the application and/or sound card software.
    To distribute surround sound to digital coaxial or optical speakers you need a miniDSP U-DIO8 (with 8 channel USB to AES-EBU or SPDIF) or Dante enables sound card and receivers for each speaker (Ethernet to digital or Ethernet to analogue). This rapidly becomes more complex and expensive compared to analogue active speakers.

      Don’t worry Marc, these topics will be revisited but I’m going to be more specific and go into more depth. For example, I am going to do one on speaker positioning. How do you know when your speakers are too far out/in, apart, towed in correctly, right height, on spikes or damped, etc.? I didn’t want to go into on axis/off axis response, cabinet resonances and edge diffraction in the first series as it would put newcomers off.
      Oops, I think that’s what you call a spoiler! Watch this space...

    You don´t loose much words on analog sources, I guess you don't listen to vinyl? No problem, I just see with all this information on youtube that you have to divide your infos between the digital and the analog group, some use both and recommend stuff for both sources. I am vinyl only so your videos gave me good information in general but not concrete stuff for me.
