When I'm lazily editing I usually just do a quick contrast/color fix, but I do the same thing as you when I'm super in depth!! Except you do it way better haha. Also this is the only photoshop tutorial i have ever actually learned something from. Ugh you just get more and more amazing girl!!

Stuff like layer mask we learned back in high school, then Gibbs offered more info on stuff interesting how it works.

Irene, great video. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. A lot of videos show how to remove shadows but few show how to enhance. This was perfect. I was working on just one specific layer of an image. It didn't work right unless I duplicated the layer too, then worked like a charm.

How do you make it so your paintbrush has a yellow circle with those two red semicircles? You hold it on one place and it seems to add shadows by itself, but how do you manage to set your brush so it can do that?

how on earth your brush is automatically appearing in all the areas you want to contour without you having to do it manually? like in 3:57 ? I was trying everything but it still doesnt work, please help!

Could you do the same thing with adjusments layers (curves) in stead of going with adjustments?
    Thanks,

I'm using Photoshop CS3. May I ask why the brush tool (being clicked in a single spot) do not follow the shadows? Is that a feature of CC that it instantly follows the shadow and you do not need to follow it using the mouse in order to darken it? Thanks!

I was having this same problem. Make sure the top color in your default color swatches located on the toolbar have white in the front, instead of black in the front. IDK why this fixes it but it does.

Irene, why do you use the eraser tool when using a layer mask. You inversed the white layer mask, essentially covering the entire image with black. You used a white soft edge brush to brush on or reveal the curves adjustment below. Then you used the eraser to undo the brushing on of the white brush. Could you have clicked the "X" key, swapping the white Brush for a black one and reapplying the veil over the curves adjustments below? I am just trying to understand why you used the Eraser tool. I do like your tutorials.....

I've tried everything and I just can't figure out why my brush won't work. After I invert the image and select my brush tool, nothing happens. I made sure the inversion is selected and the layer is unlocked. Am I supposed to press something while using the brush tool? thanks.

    Hello!
Please, could you give any tips on how to match highlights between photos taken in the same location? For example, I have several photos from different people at the beach. But throughout the camera settings change and the weather as well, my photos have different tones. Some have the highlights very high, others, have it very low. I would like to pick one and match the others as the one I picked at first place. Can you help me out? Is there a way to measure and match? Thank you!!

+Kathi6567 What is likely happening is you have the same color selected in the foreground as the layer mask you just created.....if your layer mask is black your brush needs to be the color white to appear and vice versa.....hope this helps!

LOLLL so destructiveee! This is for tutorial purposes anyways so it's whatever, but I was lowkey having mini heart attacks when you said "Go to adjustments" and then "Merge the layers" I learnt the hard way and then re-learnt from someone else's tutorial that it's better to keep the multiple layers no merging at least when you're doing bigger projects because, sometimes you won't be able to "CTRL-Z" to the very beginning

if you do all the steps like in the video, should have no problems :)

  • @MikaelMadsen

It's s good video. I just don't know why you would merge the layers and use the eraser tool on a layer mask. Use stamp copy and groups instead. And black color instead of eraser.

i actually started watching Phlearn about a week ago, so its quite impossible
and also this technique is not Phlearns property lol, i learned this from a friend of mine photographer and incorporated curves instead of actual dodge and burn
anyways i dont even know why i replied to this comment, because really its irrelevant to me
