Richard Beckinsale is coincidentally the guy on the stairs when you paused the programme at 2 minutes into your reaction. He's also in the brilliant comedy 'Porridge', starring with Ronnie Barker from the 'Four Candles' sketch. They're cell mates in prison. I'd LOVE it if you did a reaction to 'Porridge'. One of the U.K.'s best loved comedies. From the same era as the other U.K. comedies you seem to love.

Congratulations on over 14,000 Subscribers,my friend.
This was a funny show and The Late Richard Beckinsale had 2 excellent Actreses as his Daughters.
As for Leonard Rossiter as Rigsby, he was a perfectionist and expected the same of everyone else but was one of THe UK's greatest actors and one of the facially most expressive.
Don Warrington is still going strong and acting in one of our top soaps:)

Don Warrington is still going strong though and has done a lot over the years. Probably best known at the moment for playing the Commissioner in Death in Paradise.

There were a few shows that dealt with race at the time this was made....Mind Your Language, love Thy Neighbour & rising damp. They poke fun at the stupidity & ignorance of the racist. All very funny. In fact, most of the viewers were coloured people who thought it was hysterical. Probably struggle to make shows like this now, not because it would offend coloured people but because it would offend all the politically correct people. Great reaction bro. ✌

    • @herseem
      @herseem 2 года назад +1

I don't think it's because of political correctness per se; A lot of great literature or poetry works when it utilises common experiences or perspectives that are common to the audience. The comedy in relation to Philip being black worked because at the time for a much higher proportion of the public, having close contact with black people was more unusual and so it played off common ignorances, fears and misunderstandings. As a society we've moved on, and so those same jokes, if presented today as fresh comedy, would be out of step with the common cultural perspective of the public. The same thing happens with other types of 'alien' as well - gay people, for example. You can laugh at those jokes, when you take into account the cultural perspective at the time when they were made

This was kind of the, 'pilot', episode that established the characters more than anything. It gets better as it goes on. Rigsby is, of course, the main protagonist with Alan and Philip being the ones that egg him on. Ruth is supposedly his, 'love interest', but she's more interested in Philip, who of course, has no interest in her. You can imagine some of the situations that occur.

Rigsby's attitudes can be difficult for modern day people to understand, especially if they're not Brits, but most younger Brits will not get the subtleties either. Black Americans have a long history of actually being in America, whereas most Black Brits have only been in the UK since the 1940's & 50's, when they were invited here from the colonies to fill jobs vacated by the dead of WWII; and other than a few people from India, Britain was almost entirely white. The black character here, was a foreign student, so Rigsby is assuming certain things about him as he'll have come directly from Africa, I don't think the show mentions this clearly enough, but Rigsby knows the difference between a recent immigrant & people who'd been here 30 or 40 years. In other words, if he wasn't a foreign student, Rigsby would most likely be saying none of this! It's a complicated explanation now, but then, this was just part of everyday life; I knew older people like this at the time & they might say similar things, but meeting individual black people, they were largely welcoming & friendly. If a white person went to Africa etc, I'm sure there would be plenty of local jokes & taunting that would go on, so it's not much different. I think you do very well to follow a lot of these old shows, most Americans wouldn't be able to hear through the accents, you must have an ear for it ;-).

Yeah, a lot of the comedy comes from Rigsby being racist, but also classist (despite himself not being well off). He captured some of the worse qualities of a generation.
That's why despite him being extremely prejudiced against Philip initially, he quickly changes his tune when the Prince thing and money comes up. There's a lot of interplay between all of his awful conflicting views.
He's just constantly shown up for being such a bigot.
Alan's obviously got his own issues, the same as most of the characters

Remember this when I was a kid! Some power-house actors! Beckinsdale had some great natural timing but died too young. Rossiter was in a few Stanley Kubrick movies and was a genuinely great actor, and Frances de la Tour went on to some great things too. Don Warrington mixed theatre with television, and had one of the best voices of quiet authority in the business. I wish he'd been in more stuff, but I kind of fondly remember him as the 'President of the United Kingdom' in an alternate-reality episode of Doctor Who. Anyway, great reaction. I'm a sucker for any comedy that's like a play - taking all these different personalities and sticking them in a cramped room. It'd be worth watching more, it gets really funny how Phillip deliberately messes with Rigsby's narrow mind and plays him.

I@m glad to finally see an American review of the classic RISING DAMP .
You didnt seem to outwardly laugh much, BUT overall seemed to understand and enjoy it.
this sit com does seem to translate well, it is dark/black comedy the kind that I enjoy most from 1974 when the world was a very different place.
it was also interesting that you could see the coloured character coming, as back in the seventies it would have been harder to predict
(incidently you may not know that Phillip is NO son of an African chief, he originally comes from Croydon south London) but Rigsby doesnt know that of course,
if you like dark cynical humour along similar lines, you should Also look at STEPTOE & SON

If you've seen any of the 'Underworld' movies, Kate (Selene) is Richard Beckinsale's daughter.

The Hollywood actress Kate Beckensale is Richards daughter. He is a treasured actor in the UK having achieved so much in such a short time. The lovers, Porridge and rising damp being among his work. He passed away after filming Series 1 of Going straight a sequel to Porridge. After he passed Ronnie Barker pulled the plug on any more Going straight with Richard. Richard had severe dyslexia so used to always fluff up rehearsal but apparently come filming he never skipped a beat. One hell of a Handsome man.
