This song is sadly overlooked in the discussion of the greatest cover songs ever made. FF stayed true to the original song but still managed to make it their own. It is easily recognizable as Baker Street, but also easily recognizable as a Foo Fighters song!

GR's original is amazing and one of the best songs in rock. FF made a cover that to me is brilliant. It is completely original yet they play every note of the original. They learned the song note for note, nuance for nuance and then took it apart and put it back together as their own. I've read all the comments below. Why compare? They are both art; they both stand on their own; and they are both brilliant. I dare any band (including my own) to take an iconic song, and make it original yet keep every nuance. To the comment about DG's voice, he nailed GR's vibe. Amazing work, as we have come to expect. Thank you!

There's something about Gerry Rafferty's original that brings back my childhood. I distinctly remember hearing this song piped through my parents' stereo and thinking there was something so beautiful and soothing about the saxaphone and how the song came together. The Foo Fighters did a great job of modernizing it. A lot of covers fail to deliver the underlying "feel" of the song but FF did a great job of keeping it intact despite the sax being replaced by guitar. It flat out rocks.

This song always has a sad melancholy about it…Brings me back to the summer of 78, listening to this on the radio while playing outside. The FF do a great job with this 45-year old song…Can’t believe it’s been that long

Winding your way down on Baker Street
Light in your head and dead on your feet
    Well, another crazy day
    You'll drink the night away
    And forget about everything
This city desert makes you feel so cold
It's got so many people, but it's got no soul
And it's taken you so long
To find out you were wrong
When you thought it held everything
You used to think that it was so easy
You used to say that it was so easy
But you're trying, you're trying now
Another year and then you'd be happy
Just one more year and then you'd be happy
But you're crying, you're crying now
Way down the street there's a light in his place
He opens the door, he's got that look on his face
And he asks you where you've been
You tell him who you've seen
    And you talk about anything
He's got this dream about buying some land
He's gonna give up the booze and the one-night stands
    And then he'll settle down
    In some quiet little town
    And forget about everything
But you know he'll always keep moving
You know he's never gonna stop moving
'Cause he's rolling, he's the rolling stone
And when you wake up, it's a new morning
The sun is shining, it's a new morning
And you're going, you're going home

This song takes me back to a specific memory when Napster first came available and a friend was trying find the original version to this song and tried to explain the guitar solo to us. Someone even called their uncle and he just asked us if we were high and why were calling him so late at night wondering about the name of a song (we probably were)
Finally, I remembered the Foo Fighters cover after listening to it on a local rock station and blurted out" Backer Street" and he finally was able to find and download the song.
Kids today have no idea about the luxury of listening to any song at any given time without worrying about "pirating music".

Dave Grohl seems like he relates to hearing this song while riding in the back seat of his mom's car in the 70s ...legs sticking to vinyl seats of her Ford LTD, getting bitched out for spilling his Slurpee and his "no good dad" forgetting to pay child support. Have no clue if this is remotely his childhood, but I feel he was one of "us"

Instead of saying "this version is better, that version is better". Why don't you appreciate the fact that the band took a song, covered it, and made it their _own._ And that is the true meaning to covering a song. You have your own sound, and so did the original artist. So you've taken an original and made it sound like your own. Instead of someone hearing the song, and going "Oh, yeah! Gerry Rafferty! Fuck the WORLD!" When, really, it's not Gerry Rafferty, it's some other band sounding exactly like the original song. You don't know! You're fucked! But! When a band covers a song, and makes it their own. You know who covered it. You hear it, and think; "Oh, cool! Foo Fighters covering a song, but not sounding like the original. They made it their own! How fucking amazing is that?!"

    • @DanielDanger420

You sure focused hard on what I said, hm? You must be taking some kind of stimulant for ADHD then, right? What are you on?! I just smoke weed. And medicinally at that. I never point out the fact that people say the same thing a few times, nor do I ever ask if anyone is ever on anything. Grow the fuck up, kid. Really shows your age when you say shit like that.
