    Great video. I've been stick welding for about a year and am now trying to learn more about MIG. I just bought the Eastwood 175 and I am now even more excited about firing it up. I've been taking welding classes at the local community colleges and I have to admit that RUclips videos have really helped me to understand concepts that are quickly covered in class. Thanks for your thoughtful and instructive videos.

    As a former welder myself, safety is the most important rule anyone should revise on until they can remember.
    You're playing with dangerous amounts of Volts / MA, not to mention combustible gases. So if you don't get a decent ground point or you aren't aware of the surroundings, something could happen in the blink of an eye.
    The consequences can be catastrophic, be safe people.

    Clearly you know how to weld. My only issue is the short shrift given to flux core welding. I suspect a great many "amateur" welders started out using an inexpensive flux core system, before "upgrading" to MIG or TIG as the proverbial Holy Grail of welding. Be that as it may, flux core welding offers serious advantages over all other types of welding, yet these advantages go unrecognized, even by "experts" intent upon selling us all on more expensive welding systems. Once the user has developed sufficient skill using "cheap" flux core" he or she can produce quite strong, and yes, "pretty" welds using a process so may turn their nose up too. A FC bead won't be as intrinsically "pretty" as a MIG bead, but the FC weld can be make under ALL weldable conditions, whereas MIG is limited to indoor locations. FC beats SMAW every day of the week because it provides the user with a more precisely controlled system. The nonsense about what any given system can weld "in one pass" is what keeps sales of stick machines going strong when in fact, every welder knows that multiple passes can be used to fill up a V-groove of thick metal...in fact it's used all the time using TIG for pipe welding. For 90+% of all welding, the "do-it-yourselfer" is well served by a flux core machine. Even better is to purchase a "MIG" machine with infinite heat control and use FC wire in it for about 99% of welding.

    Interesting, very well put,. so a mig welder just about does it all from fluxcore , mig work to tig,. so when your ready for the gas mix it's there, and when i finally decide to get a tig wand,. It's there waiting ,.
    get a mig welder, It's worth the investment.

    5:52 My two cents. I recommend to crack the main valve ever so small like to open the Gas gently until the hose is fully charged, then fully open the valve all the way, then back it off a few millimeters. It'll save your gauges. Open it so little that you can actually see the gauges move and not just jump as if they are going to just spring out of the dial into outer space.

    hey i have a question, i am about to buy a mig 135 welding kit from you guys and i am wondering if it would work fine in my country, i think it says 120volts? here in my country we have mostly or around 110-120 so that should work just fine? also what is the actual amps would that pull from my house hold circuit ( load rating ). i dont want to buy it then it might run my bill up high or trip all the breakers in my house lol

    The valve on your tank is designed to seal itself internally when it is either fully open or fully closed. Don't "crack" the tank as suggested in the video. It is bad for your seals and will cause leaks.

    E and 5 on the welder? What does that translate to in voltage, and inches per minute on the feed rate of the wire? Differing machines have differing labeling and meanings. So, what does E equal in voltage, and 5 in wire feed speed? Last, did the chart recommend the torches travel rate for the weld, in inches per minute? What was it?

    After 9 weeks of stick welding. Which is brutal for a guy who hates stick. (Its easy but it's a pain in the ass because your swapping rods like a madman)(about 40 rods in 3) hours.
    Mig is super easy. You just need to know how to operate your machine. Which components you need. And how to start the weld(bad angle=bad start)
    Get started and with right technique then it's the easiest thing you could ever do.

      +cherfieldm An Eastwood MIG 135 is a good start and operates on 120 volts. If you want to do heavier steel check out the Eastwood MIG 175, which operates on 220 volts. Both can weld aluminum with a spool gun. Visit Eastwood.com and you can talk to a Tech who can set you up with the welder and accessories you need.

    Yeah my bad, I meant "not to mention combustible gases" which could be lying around the work environment.
    Such as Butane / Propane / Hydrogen / Ethanol etc all these factors need to be taken into consideration, especially if the individual is a self employed mobile Welder. They go where the work is.
    I apologize in advance for not making my original comment more clear, reading it back I can see I give no indication to what I was talking about.

    Great. How would you ever weld 60-year-old body panels without them being this good here? You could not. So would a tig be better to use for such than a mig? In the case of old metal being welded to new?

    • @eastwoodco
      @eastwoodco  6 лет назад

      Why aren't you able to weld the old metal? Is it rusty? If it's that bad, can you cut it out and replace it. TIG welding will give you more control over the heat.

    • @MrCbell57
      @MrCbell57 6 лет назад

      I believe it has to do with not being able to access the backside and clean it well, that the blow through happens. If you cut out a large enough piece so that you can access the inside of a panel or door, you've cut way too much. More welds more work. End up just replacing the entire piece at a huge cost. Any place I have welds I usually see dimpled metal where rust has been cleaned off. So I'm trying to weld that area. Again if I cut further back, most time it is in the way of something else...or more curved and odd shaped areas, that I cannot rebuild metal and form it to fit. Thanks for the reply.

  • @CallmeRogerRoger
    @CallmeRogerRoger 7 лет назад

    I hope they've updated their settings chart. Look at the video closely and you'll see that they're missing a zero on the wire size in inches. 0.25 in DOES NOT equal 0.6 mm, that would be .025 in. Can you imagine a MIG wire 1/4" in diameter? (The other inch sizes on the chart are wrong, too.)

    • @CallmeRogerRoger
      @CallmeRogerRoger 7 лет назад

      Absolutely true. Yes, I have a typo on a youtube post. Eastman has typos on their product! That's my point. (The chart shows wire sizes of .25" to .35".) So, you got me but I'm not an expert welding company. :-)
      Perhaps you are accustom to quarter inch welding wire?

    • @CallmeRogerRoger
      @CallmeRogerRoger 7 лет назад

      By the way, I looked at my Eastwood MIG 175 and it uses the same incorrect inch dimensions. It also has the word "lager" in the place of "larger" when referencing the wire drive wheel grooves. I don't mind that these are made in China--that brings the price to where I can buy--but it does make me worry about Eastwood's quality control when they can't get a little thing like the printing on the sticker correct.

    • @terrinewman7390
      @terrinewman7390 7 лет назад

      .25 is not1/2 in! .25 is 1/4 in.

  • @jdpower5552

    Can someone explain why it seems most guys use mig welders on automotive sheet metal than tig welding? I want to buy a tig welder AC/DC but seems like most are using mig.

    • @eastwoodco
      @eastwoodco  9 лет назад +1

      JDPower 55 Probably because they already own a MIG welder and haven't purchased a TIG welder and become comfortable with it. Some people may prefer the speed of MIG welding. TIG welding is usually going to give you better results for numerous reasons (less heat over a large area, less bead to grind flat, easier to hammer weld). Remember, Eastwood TIG welders come with a 3 Year Warranty and 30 Day Money Back Guarantee.
