  • James Marsters -- world-famous for portraying the beloved English vampire 'Spike' in the WB series "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and its spin-off "Angel" -- delights fans at his 2018 London Comic Con Q&A panel with tales from his impactful acting career and answers to their burning questions.
James Wesley Marsters (born August 20th, 1962) is an American television, film and voice actor, and a musician. Aside from his great success in the Buffy Cinematic Universe, he has also played the alien super villain 'Brainiac' on the Superman-inspired series "Smallville," 'Captain John Hart' on "Torchwood" and terrorist 'Barnabas Greeley' in Syfy's "Caprica." He appeared in a supporting role in the film "P.S. I Love You," as 'Victor Hesse' in the "Hawaii Five-0" reboot, 'Victor Stein in the Marvel series "Runaways" and as the voice of 'Zamasu' in the Funimation dub of "Dragon Ball Super."

I always love seeing actors embrace roles that they will forever be known for rather than act annoyed by it. He should be proud of Spike. That is one of greatest characters ever and he was pitch perfect as Spike.

I saw him at the 2003 Cleveland Vulkon convention, and there was this one couple who costumed themselves as Spike and Drucilla. This guy pulled it off so well that James actually nick-named him little Spike and called both of them out during his Q and A.
He asked the guy about his hair and he said he bleached it.
    JAMES: Did it hurt?
    LITTLE SPIKE: No.
    JAMES: At all?
    LITTLE SPIKE: No.
    JAMES: Lucky bastard.

      METHOD actor dude.
Is in the moment, lives for emotional enactments, lives in the scenes, makes them real, for the audience to feel.
      Character actors, one time off
Supporting the leads, & Method actors, who take the reins of the show, along with Character actors, are the actors whom add the foundations to both scenes or their fellow actors. Support actors, do exactly that.
Theater actors consider Theater to be the best acting, but film, & TV actors find theater actors snobs.
I don't know why, there is such a gap, when TV & Film mediums can be just as tasking, & the work under appreciated.
      Crew, Cast, & Stuntee's
I loved Buffy, & Angel🙍🏻‍♂️✌🏻🤦🏼‍♂️ 5th Season only. 🌃When James came on for one Season.
Because sadly like Buffy was cancelled, so was Angel, even tho, endings, tho budget nearly depleted, their endings were great, for what they had...🥀💀🥀😈❤️🤟🏼

So who else is stoked for the revival? James wants it so bad he's coming unglued, and Nicholas Brendan is ready to dawn the tweed - as a watcher.
It's coming back with a brand new cast, and yes - it is the exact same universe.
Same Buffy, same Xander, same Giles - just 13 years later after the finale.
Don't know how many of the original characters will be involved, but at least two are predicted.

I think it's London Comic Con in London, Ontario, Canada (considering James did guest there in 2018 and I don't hear the audience's accent...which means they have my accent, and I'm Canadian). I'm going to assume the creators of this event thought only local people would be seeing it cause I mean, we know when you say "London" no one thinks "Canada", so if they thought people from out of province (let alone out of country) would be watching this it'd have probably been renamed to like "South West Ontario Comic Con" or something to avoid confusion, bit of an oversight on their part.

@@balthiersgirl2658 I think it's London, Ontario, Canada Comic-Con (which James attended in 2018, and also I can't hear their accent...which means they sound like me (a Canadian), whatever they sound like...). I don't think they realized people from outside the province, let alone outside the country, would be watching this when they shortened it to "London" otherwise they probably would have specified "London Ontario" or "South West Ontario" cause obviously London England is *the* London...a bit of an oversight.

Maybe it is wrong to disagree with the actor. But, while Spike wasn't exactly "good" obviously with the chip, he chose to go get his soul.
It was actually him falling for Buffy that started the transition. Originally, it was more an obsession than love and gradually changed into true feelings. But, it was a mix of obsession, beginnings of love, and finally once they became sexual partners it became a release for the evil that was chained, but still very much who he was.
I'd say the true beginning of transition was his attempted rape, obviously not the attempt itself, but Spike was truly horrified when he saw how much he hurt her by his actions. That event was the catalyst that made him choose his soul. And he paid a heavy price to get it. He could have simply asked for his chip to be removed or to become inactive.
He made the choice to get his soul back. If there were no good in there he would not have made that choice. He knew that he would have to face the consequences of dealing with his past from the perspective of a human with a soul. He knew that would not be easy. Yet, he made that choice as full vampire soulless Spike.
The Buffy/Spike relationship was not a healthy relationship while he was soulless. The reckless, raging, darkness clouded the gentle notes of love that had taken root within Spike. The lust and obsession were stronger within him than the roots of his true feelings for Buffy. Added to that, the sexual encounters were a way to release the bottled up frustration of a chained up monster.
But, the remorse he felt for hurting her with the rape attempt was very real. It was the one thing that was stronger than the monster within. It sent him on his journey to regain his soul so that he could be someone who could be what Buffy truly needed in a man. As a souless being, he finally realized that he could never be a good partner in a healthy relationship with her.
So, yes his soul brought him to the point where he could truly be good without the evil tainting it. But, he wasn't cursed with his soul. He made a choice to get his soul back. And for that reason, he actually became a more noble and deserving man than Angelus could ever be. This fact was highlighted in the final episode. Angel couldn't wear the talisman that ultimately played a key role in their victory, because he didn't choose his soul. Spike was the only being who could, who was worthy.
So regardless of all the bad things Spike did and what happened between him and Buffy, at least a spark of good developed within him before he ever regained his soul.
( Another note: Even long before that Drusilla said, "Not even I can help you now." when she showed up to remind him of being evil and help him by doing the harm and then getting him to drink the blood of the victim. Because she sensed, in her own Drusilla way, that underneath the obsession and lust true feelings were forming though overshadowed by the darkness that was the nature of Spike.)

    • @Slaaverin
      @Slaaverin 3 года назад

In my interpretation Spike never chose to have his soul back. He wanted to give her what "she deserved" and wanted to go back "to the way he was" but in fact he wanted to get back to the time he did not care so he could kill her. He thought she deserved to die. He wasn't taken by guilt at the time. He only got his soul by "accident" he did not expect it. It's only after that he started feeling guilty. He could not really feel that without his soul.

    • @patriciabass9502
      @patriciabass9502 3 года назад

@@Slaaverin It is open to interpretation, I suppose. However, that also leaves the medallion open for interpretation. Angel couldn't wear it, although he was also a vampire with a soul. It has been a while since I've seen it, so I could definitely be wrong, but I thought his reasoning behind not being able to wear it was because he was cursed with his soul, he didn't choose it.
I guess I will need to go back and watch that part. Who knows, maybe I have it completely wrong. I have to admit that without the medallion playing a role, your scenario does make sense and definitely sounds like a Spike type thing to do. And if I am wrong about the reasoning behind the medallion, perhaps you are right.
We all tend to have our own interpretations on things. It's an interesting possibility. I will be watching it again with that possible scenario in mind.

So please don’t take this as a condemnation. I can’t describe how much I appreciate James! That being said, he still isn’t as perfect irl as he is in my head.
When he’s talking about the episode that was supposed to air right after Columbine, he gives the impression that Jonathan was up there getting ready to commit a massacre on the rest of the students. Jonathan was up there to commit suicide. Buffy essentially talked him down.
I don’t know if the network should have aired the episode when it was originally intended, to make a statement against school shootings/suicide, or if they did the right thing by being sensitive to the feelings of the people who were personally affected by Columbine. Either way, I really feel that James should have been clearer about Jonathan’s intent.
