An amazing song that I've listened to hundreds of times. Bought the vinyl when it came out.

In the mid-1990’s I wrote about this song in my freshman English class. I was shocked when my teacher Mr. Nelson wrote back on my paper “she is a prostitute”. He was a great teacher, just like Bob. 4:28

This high school English teacher says that’s a ridiculous thing to say: utterly simplistic (which is not the same as simple), reductionist, and speaking more to the concerns of the teacher. Don’t ever try to nail Dylan down.

    You're right,
You get what you get from Bob Dylan. 'Could be deeply profound, or you might get completely silly. Or a heart-rending lament.
Or something as surreal as Dahli's melting watches. Toss a coin.
From this album, my favorite is:
If You See Her Say Hello.

My favorite Dylan song is one of his first, Don't Think Twice-It's All Right (vevo official version). The perfect breakup song.

The Jerry Garcia Band’s 1990 cover is fabulous with Jerry’s fantastic guitar playing.

Joan Baez is great. Also in the 60s Joans sister Mimi and her husband Richard Farina released folk classic album Celebration For A Grey Day

If you listen to Hootie and the Blowfish, " I Only Want to be With You," it refers to and uses lyrics from this album, especially "Tangled Up in Blue". Darius Rucker is a big Bob Dylan fan.

Yeah, "the mood" - melancholy, wistful, regretful, resigned, contemplative, nostalgic ....

Imagine writing this beautiful song and it often isnt even considered in his top 10. Most artists would be happy if they only wrote this song

I bought this album when it first came out. Two weeks later I had added 6 songs from it to my repertoire! Definitely one of my favorite Dylan albums. And of course this was one of the songs I learned from it.

Dylan is Dylan-like the Forrest Gump Box of chocolates, you never know what you're going to get. I've seem him change songs live that have new or different lyrics and the music played
in a new way or almost completely unrecognizable. You buy the ticket, you take the ride.

Anything (though, yes, some more than others) from Blood on the Tracks. I've always heard a reference to "I remember it well" from Gigi.

Excellent reaction, thanks so much Shawn😊 He did a performance of this song at Harvard Square Theatre in Cambridge MA in 1975 which is a bit different and IMO equally great.

These are the two verses that have had the most revisions in the latest version:
He woke up and she was gone
He didn’t see nothing but the dawn
Got out of bed and put his shoes back on
    He pushed back the blinds.
Found a note she’d left behind. "What’d it say?"
"You should have met me back in ‘58
We could have avoided this little simple twist of fate."
People tell me it’s a sin
That it’s wrong and it’s wicked, too far down in
I let her get under my skin,
    Under my skin too late
    I had another date,
    A date that couldn’t wait
Blame it on a simple twist of fate.

"She dropped a coin into the cup of a blind man at the gate" -- the singer is the blind man; she gave him a little of her time then split.
She walks along on the waterfront docks/where the sailors all come in. Let's be polite: she sleeps around -- a lot of one-night stands -- for money.

Jerome John "Jerry" Garcia and his band, The Jerry Garcia Band, not that other band, do a beautiful version on their "LIVE" album that is definitely worthy of a listen. You will enjoy it for sure.

SToF is a look at an idyllic relationship that fell apart for reasons neither party can control from the point-of-view of a narrator who has moved on to meaningless one-night stands.
