Great video! I just found you and subscribed! I found an inexpensive way to seal my dry goods in Mason jars! I purchased the regular and wide mouth attachments from Amazon and also ordered a brake bleeding kit! This allows you to take out the air and seal the Mason jars without spending over $130 for the machine! Works great.

That is really inspiring to me as we've made the transition this year to a new property with lots of opportunities to live off the land. I'm learning so much and I keep hearing, "back to basics". Good thought on cutting/taking the labels off of what you transfer to your storage containers. We use painters tape to label our containers, the wider tape if we need to add info on nutrition, cooking, etc.

I'm about over the instant potatoes. I want them as a prep, but balk at eating them even though I did for many years. They go rancid after several years, so I would advise rotating. Probably the artificial flavorings they use.

I was glad to hear that in the future, the area underneath the table might become enclosed. I'm new to long term storage, and am just learning, but I hear soooooooo many people saying to keep things in not just a cool place, but also a dark place. Just an idea. If this under table area isn't going to become inclosed, or if it is going to take a while for it to become enclosed, perhaps you can make a fun project with your kids, of covering the outsides of the storage containers. Do you ever use applesauce instead of oil when baking? It works well in most muffins and breads, such as banana, apple or zucchini bread. I know you'd mentioned wanting to be more oil free. I'm really enjoying watching you organize your pantry and hearing your thought process as you stock up and prepare.

I do keep an inventory of my buckets but there’s absolutely no way I would have the time to keep adding to The inventory list for the food in the house… Because I keep adding to it almost on a daily basis at least right now I am but thanks for the video and keep stocking people
Have you thought about getting a flour mill? You can grind fresh gluten free grains and buy beans rice etc... Whole and it stores longer and taste amazing fresh. Flour can go rancid after a time, the oils in them are fragile.
Hey! You seem knowledgeable about flours going rancid! I have been looking for someone to help me with a question I have! I am just trying to start right now and want to make as little mistakes as possible. I have a spreadsheet for prepping im using, it says to store 150 lbs of wheat for out family, but since I have celiac I want to store sweet rice millet and potato starch to make into flour, since the spreadsheet also calls for 75 lbs of flour for our family, is that what the raw wheat is for? To make more flour, so i would get the equivalent of the 150 lbs in the un ground millet, rice and potato starch? TIA

I've sat down and added up there's 25 people in my immediate family from my parents, kids, grandkids, and nieces nephews who I raised to keep everyone out of state care. I think I'm going to buy a shipping container and installing a dehumidifier then I will start gathering supplies. My Ex is retiring from military and fire dept in 2025, and 2 of our 3 kids have joined military too. I've been watching yt videos for the best and most cost effective guns to protect ourselves in case we need to do so.
We buy at Home Depot or Lowe’s the food grade 5 gallon buckets and gamma lids for our bulk flour, sugar, salt, dog food, etc. we pour them from the bag into these buckets and the gamma lids make it easy to access by twisting them off versus pulling the sealed lids off. (We do put Bay leaf in the flour to keep the weevils out). This has worked perfectly and you can stack them. We actually have two for flour and two for sugar.
I buy the saf yeast from Amazon . I get 2-1lb bags and keep a jar in my working pantry and store the rest in the freezer. It has never failed to rise even the last bit in the bag that has been in my freezer for over a year. I love the storage containers from chewy and have thought about using them for my flour and sugar I buy in bulk. Take care and God bless!

Determined mice, rats, squirrels, etc can chew through plastic....so use plastic in secure areas...food grade metal barrels with lids are on Facebook marketplace, my area, for example, $15 to $35 each so for basement, garage, outbuilding storage we use barrels...we also use new metal 33-ish gallon trash cans but they aren't food grade so we keep items in original packaging or something similar.

@@kristinatidwell6563 Keep in mind that those freezers have vents to them and animals can and do get into them, particularly if they are not running. If you're going to keep them on and indoors, then you're good, as they won't survive that temp.

I actually use that great value pancake mix but also want to learn to make from scratch but it has been hard for me to find a gluten free recipe that just uses AP flour. I am finding a lot of almond flour, coconut flour, buckwheat recipes. Flour wise I use the GV All purspose flour and caputo GF bread flour. All I have made from scratch is foccacia with the bread flour. I also buy the bobs red mill pizza crust but my caputo flour has a pizza crust recipe I want to give a try. I also buy the GF red lobster cheddar bay biscuit box for biscuits. And the Aldis GF brownie mix. So... I really need some help learning how to bake from scratch with GF. If I can I want to pair down to just AP flour and bread flour for pancakes, biscuits, brownies, loaf bread, foccacia, and pizza crust. That's all I would need flour for.
The mixes were just a crutch to help us make the transition. But watch for upcoming videos on what we eat in a week and how we use our ingredients to make recipes!
Correction: 1/2 cup of chocolate chips per batch of chocolate chip cookies/week. We go light on choc chips in our cookies to reduce sugar

Nice preps. I buy grits, oatmeal, cold cereal, powdered milk, corn beef hash, Rice-A Roni, couscous, tomato sauce, dry kidney beans, cornmeal, beef tamales in the can, tuna, red salmon, Idahoan instant potato, Sabritones, green beans, hominy, Mazola corn oil, turkey sausage and bacon. shrimp,catfish, chicken wings, Stove Top stuffing cornbread. Pepsi, water, Schweppes ginger ale. I order groceries online, and have them delivered.
Be careful with tomato sauce in cans only last about 1 year because of acidic nature

One ingredient has to do with food that is minimally processed. The more processed a food is the more ingredients and preservatives they have in them.

I actually use that great value pancake mix but also want to learn to make from scratch but it has been hard for me to find a gluten free recipe that just uses AP flour. I am finding a lot of almond flour, coconut flour, buckwheat recipes. Flour wise I use the GV All purspose flour and caputo GF bread flour. All I have made from scratch is foccacia with the bread flour. I also buy the bobs red mill pizza crust but my caputo flour has a pizza crust recipe I want to give a try. I also buy the GF red lobster cheddar bay biscuit box for biscuits. And the Aldis GF brownie mix. So... I really need some help learning how to bake from scratch with GF. If I can I want to pair down to just AP flour and bread flour for pancakes, biscuits, brownies, loaf bread, foccacia, and pizza crust. That's all I would need flour for.
The mixes were just a crutch to help us make the transition. But watch for upcoming videos on what we eat in a week and how we use our ingredients to make recipes!
