10K, Yay! Very well deserved Dean. 👏 Great widget, very useful, straightforward to make and I love the rolling track. I'll definitely be nicking that idea for my shop 👍 Now all I need is, er, a shop. Mine's currently in bits as I'm selling up and moving soon(ish), possibly to France. Maybe I should make a few vids about that little adventure/nightmare when it happens? Great to see you well and mobile mate, here's to the next 10K! All the best.
Hi Dean. Many congratulations for getting to 10k subscribers, it’s well deserved for the excellent content you are creating. Great to see you well and keep up the great work. Top marks for your invention, it’s brilliant! Well done. It’s going to be an incredible asset for your filming. Really looking forward to more new videos. Also, my new workshop flooring arrived from Garage Floors Direct this week. Thank you for negotiating a discount code for the purchase, it was greatly appreciated. 👍
Thank you! I’m pleased you like the flooring as well, I’m sill super happy with it - I even sweep up and vacuum regularly now, never done that before in the workshop but the floor makes it easy!
Thanks fella! Photography and videography is brilliant fun, I used to do a lot before this channel. Starting it up again is stressful but absolutely worth it, although I don’t have the space for lighting in the workshop like I did with my studio lol A handful of pictures of mine are here instagram.com/dean_pettitt?igsh=YnNoOXh2bWRuYXAx but I didn’t really publish a lot. Camera stuff is brilliant if you’re on the lookout for a hobby outside of woodwork LOL
@WoodworkJourney I bet it is. Sadly with a full time gig and my yt stuff a hobby is not possible. I need to find someone who does a video settings for dummy's first. I like how your lens makes close up face shots look great and wider shots. I feel an upgrade to my canon m50 coming up.
congrats on 10K Dean! I followed you for years on you old channel and followed you over to this one. great to see you're doing good and successful in your new trade mate. 👍
The lighting looks really good for taking to the camera. You can tell that you've done this before. The camera, lighting and depth of field all look great straight away. Pro level 😀
Thank you, still a bit to get used to, but for the first go with this setup I’m pretty happy with most of it. Still got some lighting stuff to figure out but I’ll get there 😊
Cool mount you've made there Dean, I might have to copy the idea and do a version that hooks over the bottom of the exposed trusses in my garage shop. I often make videos demonstrating things in my face vise or wagon vise, and with a tripod between me and the bench sometimes footing is awkward. This rig would solve that nicely.
Great project Dean. I could really use something a bit similar in my shop. I might have to borrow the idea and see if I can get something to suit my space.
Awesome set up Dean! With this and the new camera you'll be hitting 100.000 subs in no time! Just a thought: the wobble might be negated by using two lengths of beefier steel C channels? The lighting was very good, depth of field looking awesome.
Thanks! The wobble isn’t an issue really (although I didn’t do a good job demonstrating it lol), I don’t need it to be a smooth camera dolly so I just set it up and have to be a smidge careful
As a former fan of your previous channel, i expected nothing less from you, Dean!! 😉 😆 It's already looking great from a camera / lighting point of view 👍 Your arm is perfect for your application. However, I personally dont see a use for it in my workshop ... yet!! Lol 😂 Keep up the great content, my friend, and give Sani a fuss from me (yes, i remember you getting her 😊)
Thank you Jon! Sadly Sanni passed way a few years ago, full of cancer. We rescued another pooch now who was a pup when we got her. Sanni was huge, relaxed, super chill all the time. Pepper is half Sanni’s size, terrorises us, and somewhat of a Tasmanian devil, but she’s ace (mostly LOL).
@WoodworkJourney oh Dean, I'm sorry to hear that. But I'm so glad that you were able to rescue her and give her a loving home. So happy that you have rescued another 😊👍 From the same place?
Now add a wall mounted or hand held push button remote garage door opener to control the overhead gantry for forward & backward closeups & wide angle views
Hi Dean great idea I use a tripod and motorised mount on my set up with an SJ 6 camera what’s the camera your using and does it record constantly or do you have to join segments together many thanks
Hi Phil, I’m using a Sony A6700 with a Sigma 18-50 2.8 lens in this video, first time using this setup. I record bits individually then get them into my editing software (Final Cut Pro) and chuck it together, edit out stuff, add in stuff, colour it, sort out audio and all that jazz. I really enjoy the editing part - as long as I shot the correct footage!
@@WoodworkJourney Dean lol 😂 love the last comment thanks for the info will look into it the reason for asking is I don’t edit but that’s just me have a great week
Yep a great use for a shotgun mic - although I highly recommend using the Lark 2 from Hollyland. It’s the best wireless setup I’ve used and is tiny, I used to boom a Sennheiser shotgun on my other channel and loved it, but it’s not really helpful in the workshop situation. This is the Hollyland that I absolutely adore amzn.to/3YHvIXH
DEAN! You Fuji traitor! Unsubscribed! (just kidding) 🤣 loving the overhead central track! And 10k subs! Crack on!…. Which reminds me I’ve got to sort out something similar for different positions incl overhead…..shame my led strip lights run right down the middle…. Needs some thought….🤔
LOL I know! And we were even talking about it the other day on here, pretty crazy really. I didn’t expect to go from one flagship to another but I’m pleased with my choice so far - this literally was the first video filmed on it so I’ve got lots to learn! You could always make standoffs where the lights are, that way your track could run just over them. Don’t you get shadows when working at the sides of the workshop? That used to make me go mental in mine LOL
@@WoodworkJourney hi Dean thanks for this… (good luck with the new system) in spite of the amount of Fuji gear I’ve got ( and that I originally had the garage fitted out for a flash portrait studio) I’ve reverted to just using the led strips down the middle and my iPhone 11 to do the channel. Has turned out simpler and more reliable and lighting seems OK… but need to move away from sitting the phone on a tripod going forward, maybe something like you have and 3point led lighting?
@GrumpaLoz the four shop lights (led 5ft jobs) I have are parallel with each wall about a foot away from the wall and in the middle of each wall. So I’ve now added little switches I think for at least some talking head stuff, one side light on as a key, and that bounces off the opposite while wall as a fill. Then a little led panel as a hair light and the shadows should also be slightly out of focus. So yeah a Rembrandt style lighting. I think I’m going to setup something different over the bench like a top down side fill but it’s early stages so I’m sure I’ll fanny about with out for a while before I get it sorted.
I’m looking for something simple like that for over my bed that I can mount my laptop on so I can use my laptop while I’m bedridden flat out on my back in bed for about four hours a day. I’ve gotten so far behind on paperwork, it would be a great way to get caught up while following doctor’s orders.
Good idea, although I’m not sure how you’d add a brake to stop it moving while you’re typing. Luckily when I’m bedridden laying flat doesn’t help me, so I have a wedge, pillows, and a little over the lap table that’s adjustable for the computer etc - in fact it’s how I edited this video. Mine is like this one amzn.to/3YCzmCp
@@WoodworkJourney While that looks like it would be good for a lot of people, that wouldn’t work for me. I’m literally talking about lying flat on my back, so think along the lines of a mounting a flat screen TV on the ceiling and lying in bed on your back watching your favorite shows. I’m seriously thinking about designing something that comes down from the ceiling and is movable so I can swing it out of the way when I’m not using it. An articulating arm of some type. Where there’s a will, there’s a way - I just have to fill in the blanks between Point A and Point B 😉

Nicely done, Dean. Nothing better than a new, multifunctional tool.
I love your set up! You really thought it out well and it's cool to see that you made all of it yourself! Nice work!
brilliant. really great picture and lighting Dean. I wish I knew how to get mine to look half as good as yours.

Fantastic invention Dean 🙌 I may nick that idea 😉😃… congrats on the 10k , cheers Rob

Hi Dean, hope your well, great idea, if it make work easier in the workshop it's a must. As always a great video Take care
Thanks Shaun
Cool idea. Lighting on the intro was spot on Dean 👌🏻
Thanks, still got soft to figure out but I’ll get there
Great project Dean. I could really use something a bit similar in my shop. I might have to borrow the idea and see if I can get something to suit my space.
Go for it! Instead of rails you could even mount the arm on a wall, but the opportunities are endless!
@@WoodworkJourney that might be the one. I have a up and over style carafe door that’s usually open so the ceilings not as much of an option.

Thanks Tony
Looks great the camera mount looking forward to more videos :)
Thanks!

LOL I very nearly added a simple pulley system funnily enough lol
Any thoughts on how to stop the wobble?
Tighter tolerances probably, but once you hold it in place it stays there without wobble - unless a ghost or my shoulder/head moves it
I've actually been meaning to make myself something similar for some time now ,nice job .
Great stuff Dean, I was hoping there'd be a video on this 👌
Thanks! Sadly not a construction video but hopefully I explained it to make it easy for someone to make something similar

The light looks good. When you switched it on it was too bright for that scene.
Yep, I think I mentioned that, I left the camera on the same setting where I would usually expose for the shot
great idea and could have solved my sons mike boom problem.
