Hi Karen, thank you for all the good content. I am a high school freshman who is really passionate about cognitive science( mainly, I want to study the essence of consciousness). But I am really worried about my academic extracurriculars when it comes to university applications. I want to do something in this subject that tells the admissions officer that I have a really strong interest. The only thing that I can think of is to do scientific research, but this probably requires university-level knowledge and I am not sure whether I can come up with anything valid in high school. Do you have any suggestions on what should I do? Thank you!!

Hello :) I have a masters in my fields (music therapy & mental health counseling) and want to get a B.A. in Cognitive Science now, but must do it ONLINE. I live in North Carolina. I'm 40 and cannot drop everything to go to school somewhere. Does Berkley offer this degree ONLINE? And if not, do you have recommendations for colleges that do? I have to be honest, I still owe all the money to my other degrees and am also looking for financial aid to the Nth degree for this if you have information on that as well. Thank You!

I remember being frustrated that I can't study bio, psychology, computer science, neuroscience, and philosophy at the same time lol. And then I found out that Cognitive science is a full package! Also it gives a lot of opportunities, even in art? I'm sold.
Thank you for the video, its so much helpful! Especially for seniors high school students like me. Wish you successful studies and staying healthy for everyone!:)

I'm a Psychology major, and 90% of this video is what I'm already studying. I decided to double major in Neuroscience so I could fully understand human behaviour from a biological perspective. If I want to go into tech, I have the option. I'm currently working in clinical research, but I'm heavily interested in law. Great video!

I was just researching Master's programs today and couldn't figure out what I wanted to pursue. This gave me a much clearer idea of Cognitive Science and it might just end up being my major. I'm currently working my way through a Bachelor's in Psychology already, but since there are so many directions and applications it has been hard to narrow down the specializations I'd want. Thank you for shining a light on this, it was super helpful.

  • @soundmoney4all24

I believe Cognitive Science will depend on what university you attend and it's program and overall school ranking. Someone who goes to Berkeley and studies Cognitive Science, can pretty much receive the benefit of the doubt, and land any job they want as long as they can learn another applicable discipline through a minor or self-study. This would not be the case for Cal State Fullerton or UT-Dallas student.

Is there a lot of math involved lol

And what kind of math because I’m not good at calculus AT ALL, but I love the aspects of philosophy, computer science, and all that instead of having to choose a specific 1

hello!! omg no not at all! they do require you to take one math course called Discrete Math and Probability - arguably the hardest math ive ever taken - but once you pass that class, its smooth sailing. no more math if you dont want to! :)

What will be a great High school student profile, Extra carriculars to get admission into Cognitive science.

I gotta be a little blunt... :( Even as someone who dabbles in cognitive science topics, this is actually quite embarrassing.... everything from the way you paint cogsci major as some kinda back-up option for underachieving compsci major dropouts, to the utterly shallow understanding you seem to have about the field. What you have presented in this video is most APPLIED cognitive science. In the grand scheme of cogsci, those things could not be more trivial. I know Berkeley's reputation in cogsci reflects its faculty/grad school population, but even that said.... you're really putting your school name to shame here.
For those interested, what cognitive science is REALLY about...
The actual SCIENCE of cognitive science is to ultimately an effort to bridge the gap of understanding between the brain and the mind, one that historically (and explicitly) dates back to one of the greatest philosophers/mathematicians Descartes' mind-body problem (aka Cartesian dualism). It carves very, very deep into the questions of epistemology and the nature of reality and perception of it, whose fundamentality rivals those profound questions of physics. The physical reductionist doctrine (i.e. to reduce the functional properties of the mind to the physical matter) is built right into the core tenets and endeavors of cognitive science... that's what sets it apart from strict Fodorian functionalist disciplines (old school cognitive psychology) or other fields of psychology that don't attempt at all to ground the understanding of the mind in terms of physical processes.
1:56 So here when you talk about about cogsci as being "macro"... you seem to be deeply confused... though I feel that maybe you were thinking cognitive systems or something.
Comparing cogsci and general psyc is just not apt (psyc is way too general of a field). If what you meant was cogsci vs. cogpsy, which both approach with "primitive" or "building blocks/processes" of cognition (thus inevitably shares some boundaries with perception studies in neuroscience), the first distinction is one that I mentioned before (cogpsy mostly wanting to stay at the level of functionalism while cogsci tries to integrate different Marr's levels) and the second is the ways the disciplines balance experiment vs. modeling. Cogpsy is heavily experiment-driven field, with the theory aspect often times discussed in loose, handwavy ways, in comparison to cognitive scientists who build rigorous computational models to complement their theories (and experiments to align the models with empirical data, though to a lesser extent). And the reason why computational models are often more necessary for cognitive scientists than cognitive psychologists is specifically because their theories often attempt to integrate diff levels thus need to capture complexity of the more physical, lower-level systems, from which more conscious cognition emerges.
Also, you brought up behaviorism but never addressed why.. there's a much greater lesson from that chapter of history of psychology. Yes I know, in psyc101 they're often quick to bash the older "failed" attempts of behaviorism from early 1900s, but they were actually just trying to be good empiricist, backed by logical positivism. It was actually a much needed response to Freudian types of unfalsifiable introspective psychoanalytics and "psychology" reigning academia at the time.

Thank you for this thorough explanation! Some of these things are precisely what I learned in my classes so I really appreciate your comment, so that people can know more in depth if they're interested :) It's definitely challenging to pack the details of this field in one video, as it is complex and has deep and fascinating philosophical roots as you've just mentioned! Because of this, I still stand by everything I said in my video, as my intention was simply to share the type of information I myself would've found helpful when I was deciding whether or not to study this major. It ended up being more application-based, yes -- because that's what I personally would've wanted to know from fellow students and Berkeley bears who went through this major. But thank you for bringing the more theoretical aspects to light and for watching either way! Wishing you a great rest of your week :)

@@KarenSupandi I understand you're trying to be helpful, and believe me I don't mean to offend you, but the bottom line is you haven't presented cogsci very well in this video, and you could do a much better job. What would someone not knowing anything take away about cogsci here? -- that it's just some vague, interdisciplinary major cooked up for computer science flunked-outs who need an alternate fancy name to put on a paper in hopes of salvaging backdoor into tech? Spreading this sort of myth is a disservice, not just to the students trying to learn about the field but also to the reputation of the field as a whole.
Even from a mentorship perspective, the whole video you're trying to sell cognitive science on premises of its tangential tech-y fields... honestly, this is just complete bollocks
Wanna be a programmer ? --> major cs w/ emphasis on software programming
Wanna build NLP for tech? --> major cs w/ emphasis on NLP
Wanna get in to human-comp interaction? --> major human comp interaction
Wanna design solutions for some company? --> major business. Scrutinize ins and outs of business dynamics involved in the specific environment
Wanna get into tech support? --> learn the specific skills to do that
Build effective human-centered campaigns? --> again, learn the specific skills to do just that
Or, are you intensely curious about the nature of human mind and its physical substrates and want to theorize about it, build computational models, and testing them empirically, primarily w/ the intention of developing scientific theories? (as opposed to being in it for $$, in which case you should just get into CS/AI) --> major in cognitive science.
The naive idea that a few psychology facts that you picked up from classes will somehow generalize to domain-specific industries... precisely speaking, it's not 100% incorrect but incorrect enough you'll mostly likely regret it.
