    The pro is the best, have onne haven't broken a handle in 3 years, 4 full cords green oak, and Dead oak per year. Great handle allows hand slide and bulb on end of handle saves your hands from fatigue better than any other maul.... sharp cuts thru elm quickly.

    Pro splitting axe... Have had mine for about 7 yrs and have not had to sharpen it. Scraped the varnish and paint off, lightly sanded and then oiled it with boiled linseed oil. Can't beat it..!

      I have a video on my channel that explains the same thing you said, great splitting axe, I honed the edge on my old school pedal powered whetstone wheel, it’s as sharp as your favorite pocket knife, and I immediately removed the plastic BS varnish and paint and opted for a burnt and oiled handle instead. 10/10 would recommend

    When i was very young ,i was just beginning to learn how to use a new wood spliting maul
    The maul got stuck ,so as most people do,i layed my left hand on the round and began to tap the maul out with my right hand. The maul flipped over and severely cut my left wrist wide open. I am sixty seven years old and still carry that scar. When removing a stuck implement i never lay my left hand on a round

    I’ve got all three. They are all great. As you have shown here. When compared to the cost of a real (hydraulic) splitter, buying a quality maul or axe is small potatoes. After 15 years of splitting 6-7 cords a year with a maul, for all that money saved, I can afford a little variety. We always have an extra edge when the wood is frozen. I find the axe will shine in certain grains where the maul is not so effective as well as the axe not doing a damn thing. I recently got the pro maul, it’s a pound or so heavier and the handle is longer. I have to shape the handle before I really get some time on it. Although I like the look of the handle with the paint an all that, grinding the handle down bare, sealing it with a coat or two of boiled linseed oil and shaping it, especially making the palm swell at the bottom sharper really let’s me snap at the bottom of the swing. The metal on the bits of all of them is nice and hard and really holds an edge for the price. Few things keep a person calm as getting outside in all the different weather, getting the heart rate up, and smashing rounds apart. I’m a self employed carpenter, if I didn’t do all this splitting year round, I’d probably be in jail😆.

    Pretty sure the handle on the maull is Ash, I have heard handles breaking way too soon on those. Probably wouldn't be $55 if it had a good grain oriented hickory handle. I think ox makes both of these.

  • @John-cj3ve
    @John-cj3ve Год назад +1

    It looked to me like the less expensive one had a slight edge, but only slight. It was probably the variation in the individual chunks of wood.
    I just bought, and tried out; the Stihl Woodcutter Forestry axe, and it was just what I was looking for; SPEED!
    You wouldn't think that a guy who already had ten axes and hatchets, would "need" another one, but down the rabbit hole I go!😅

  • @johnmainwaring6556
    @johnmainwaring6556 3 года назад +4

    Hard to tell because your technique was good with both. I think the Pro has a slight edge on the cheaper one, but not twice the edge. Going up in quality is an exponential curve with diminishing returns on extra $ spent. I have the woodcutter and find it better than any Maul I've used before switching to Stihl.

    I would like a longer handle like the fiskars x27 has and the ax would be plenty for me. The next problem is they don’t offer a lifetime warranty like fiskars and with what I split in a year I question the handle holding up.

    • @airmobiledivision7759
      @airmobiledivision7759 3 года назад +1

      I don’t know. The handle looks pretty robust on the Stihl. Plus, you can always replace the handle if it should break, unlike that of the X27.

      @@waynejohnson9855 How are you going to split wood while the axe is in transit to and from the manufacturer? If it breaks at the wrong time, you’re screwed. Plus, I’m assuming you have to cover shipping. I have an X27 myself, so I’m by no means bashing it or you. It is nice to be able to replace, or even make your own handle, though.

    • @waynejohnson9855
      @waynejohnson9855 3 года назад +1

      Never have had to pay freight, now they have you mail the old one back so that does cost a little. I have the fiskars maul also so I can use that. If I could find it in a long handle I would probably try it in the axe. Maybe the handle would hold up but I do 100 full cord a winter and have never had a wood handle last a winter and I’m not very good at putting handles in and getting them to stay in.

My handles last around 2-5 years, and I always have a spare ready. What is the advantage of sanding the varnish off and oiling? I have tried several axes (ranging from 3-5 pounds) and different weight mauls (ranging from 6-13 pounds) and I keep coming back to the standard 8 pounder.
