Freddie Mercury was a natural baritone but had a four octave voice. His vibrato was the fastest ever known and he used the ventricular folds in his throat to sing sub harmonics. See the university study led by Christian Hebst. Born to sing and play piano as he had a natural ear and perfect pitch. He was doing a voice warm up with the crowd which we lived doing with him as it amped us up!

Freddie had a flu during this event. Check out Freddie's solo Exercises in free love. It was his impersonation of Montserrat"s vocal style.
BTW Vanilla Ice stole the base riff.

Freddie friends say he is the most humble , kind, generous, and loyal to his friends, and if there’s anything he can do for anyone he knows needs something. Wrote the song soul brother for brian when he was having a bad time. He is so funny and silly sometimes. Freddie was born in Zanzibar,of the east coast of Africa, now Tanzania. You must look at the videos history o queen. Also history of each member of the band. Also love of my life was written for his girlfriend , Mary Austin. She was the love that couldn’t be replaced by anyone he left everything to her, especially his home. The where true loves and she was even at his side when died. He wanted Mary to bury his ashes , and didn’t want anyone to know but her. So much about him is interesting.

Btw, yellow is Freddie’s favorite color!! Someone who had been at this concert said it was electrifying when that famous baseline began!! 👏👏

It's nice to see you again. As I've read Roger has the same 4 octaves voice as Freddie had, but their vocal type is different. Freddie was not having a battle with the crowd, but flirting with them. 😉 This song was written with David Bowie together. He visited the band in Montreux at the studio session, they started jamming and John Deacon came with the famous riff out. They went for having dinner then returned to the studio, but John completely forgot that riff and Roger was who exactly remembered on.

In concert, Freddie might not go as high as on the recording. If you count each song in the medley separately, the setlist has 28 different songs on it - and he's singing lead in most. To get a good idea of his range, "Impromptu" at this concert is all his vocalizations. I have heard that Roger and Freddie have the same top range (they can both hit the same notes), but they sound differently because of the tone and heft of their voices. Whether that's true or not - I don't know. Glad to see Queen come up on your channel again.

    • @jazzlefettie

It amazes me how many people question whether Freddie was able to sing the higher notes just because he doesn’t sing every high-pitched note in every song during their 2-hour long concerts where Freddie is singing about 99% of the time. If you just try to sing full-out for an hour; take a 15 minute break; and then sing full-out again for another hour, you might get a little idea of why Freddie needed to carefully protect his vocals during concerts by having Roger take some of the higher parts. After all, Queen often had another concert the next day during which Freddie miraculously did it all again, wowing every single person in earshot. In addition to listening to Impromptu, which shows how Freddie can sing crazy high notes during live concerts, you can also check out Rockin’ In Rio, which similarly shows Freddie’s insane range even at a live show.

Queen are an amazing band & in my opinion, the best band ever! All 4 are amazingly talented & smart! Roger Taylor, the drummer has a degree in biology, the bassist John Deacon a degree in electronics, Freddie had a diploma/degree in Design & lead guitarist Dr Brian May has a degree in Astrophysics & has worked with NASA on projects! Brian & his father built his guitar out of objects around the house as they couldn’t afford to buy one! This guitar which he called “The red special” is the one he uses to this day! Keep up the great Queen reactions, kind regards from Melbourne Australia 🇦🇺

Welcome back to the Queen rabbit hole! Freddie's call and response was a regular part of Queen shows. That's one of the things Freddie is well known for. Queen audiences will do whatever Freddie asks them to do. They instinctively know what their role is. They know when they are supposed to repeat what Freddie says and when they are supposed to sing a portion of a song. The band liked the audience to feel like they were part of the show and they developed a very unique relationship over the years that continues still to this day. Thanks for the reaction!

In the 80's Freddie suffered from nodules on his vocal chords so there were times in live concerts, depending how he was feeling, that he went lower and the live versions of songs adapted to how Freddie's vocals were at the time and Roger often sang the high notes when Freddie couldn't, they complimented each other. Freddie didn't really do himself any favours in many of the songs he wrote especially the songs in the early years of Queen which required higher tones, as he got older his voice obviously changed and also the number of concerts, world tours and Freddie started smoking heavily all took their toll.

Freddie always played with the crowd like this. And his little da da daos are actually in the song.

People assume Roger could go much higher but it wasn't much if any.
But he had a very different tone?
So was often used instead of Freddie.
Tours went of for months and mostly without much brake .
2hr concerts Freddie chose not to sing all the songs the same only to protect his voice.
Roger was supposed to do harmonies and in this he's doing Bowie part
But if Freddie was gaving vocal issue then Roger would step up to let Freddie regain himself

Yes in live performances Roger does go higher, although Freddie could reach counter tenor range equal to a female soprano, for something different you can react to Freddie singing in the counter tenor range in a solo recording called Exercises in Free Love. I think you will be shocked at how high Freddie goes while singing these operatic style vocal exercises.

  • @trevorgoddard2278
    @trevorgoddard2278 2 года назад

The call and response or crowd battle as you called it was a regular thing in Queens Live performances.
This video is from 1986 when Freddie was noticing the affects of AIDS but before it was diagnosed, if you check out 70's and early 80's Freddie he could go a lot higher, but Roger could do it with relative ease, so he got given the highest notes to sing.
Vanilla Ice should have listened to "Death on Two Legs (Dedicated to...)" before stealing the base line from this song, to fully understand how Queen feel about being ripped off.
Brian May's guitar (The Red Special) is indeed home made (with help from his father), because as a teenager he couldn't afford to buy one, it is still his first-choice guitar, and sounds just as unique now as it ever did.
