What actually is a "rock ballad"? Actually it is not about piano/keyboard riffs there are of course examples .. just not as typically with keyboard over the electric guitar, bass, drums, and intense vocals. A "rock ballad" becomes a "power ballad" when it comes to the themes of love, Sadness or other big feelings go. They are all songs that tell a story about an emotional situation. Another by Bon Jovi "power ballad" (1993) is - BED OF ROSES and a big hit going to #1 and a huge worldwide hit you could do also. Bon Jovi was big in the 80s but also hits in the early 90s too. Song has both piano with guitar .. just the guitar is the standout. Another is the "power ballad" by Metallica - NOTHING ELSE MATTERS (1992). Though a heavy thrash metal band... they did do a couple ballads. One being - Metallica - Nothing Else Matters is a huge classic today... yet topped at #11. Metal did not top charts.. though today Metallica is like Kings of the Rock Era besides merely one of the man sub-genres within the rock era. No piano. Another huge "power ballad" by Guns N' Roses - NOVEMBER RAIN (1992 also) It has piano throughout yet the guitar solo that has a big official video production. Cannot forget one by - Cher - IF I COULD TURN BACK TIME (1989). The Navy gave permission to do the video on a battle ship. They thought it would be good PR for recruiting like those watching MTV. They did not expect a video with Cher showing up with a lot showing..... It of course was a huge hit ... MTV would not show the video unless after primetime hours. Another big "power ballad huge of the 80s is by - Heart - ALONE (1983) hitting #1. Heart had hits in the 70s.... then did the 80s make-over of sorts to the times and some hits. You can't get more POWER than Ann Wilson's voice in this song and 80s big hair and flamboyance shown in their video. Some prefer 70s Heart... still you cannot deny 80s Heart too. The "power ballad" by Foreigner - I WANT TO KNOW WHAT LOVE IS. Also hit #1 in (1985)
