Rob said that there was an idea to refer to 2.2 as "3.0", and the only reason it wasn't done was because people would have forever joked "When's 2.2 releasing?"
Agreed. I mean, there are noticeable differences between the earlier versions, with the music going from the original MIDIs to Cyan Helkaraxe's remixes, and the graphics getting better little by little, as well as the level design making marginal improvements...and then v2.2 hits with significant changes all over. It's still recognizable, but between the major graphical improvements, the remixed music by CobaltBW and DrTapeworm, and the further improvements to the level design...2.2 was a BIG update to be sure.

Honestly, this is exactly what sets SRB2 apart from most 3D Sonic Fan Games. You get loads and loads of demos with people screaming they are infinitely superior to Sonic Team's games and that SEGA should hire them, yet most of those project never see the light of day and remain as just that, demos. The dedication of the Sonic fanbase is a remarkable thing. It's hard to believe this game is older than the Sonic Adventure games. It's also crazy to see just how much of the game play was already more or less done in it's earlier stages in development. Sonic's sprite in particular has always looked very good!
It's pretty surreal, seeing this. A little backstory - SRB2 is like, one of my *very earliest* gaming memories. It's something my brother got me as a kid on our and then my PC when I was what, 4? years old (he's a real one for that and a million other reasons.) He was a Sega kid growing up, he passed that down to me and that game's a huge reason why I managed to be a bit of a Sega kid despite having never owned one. Anyway - yeah I have vague but *powerful* memories of playing this as a kid - if memory serves, it'd be the final demo of 2003. The Greenflower Zone and the early stages of the Techno Hill Zone (I wasn't really good enough to get much further; for all my time spent in games I wasn't and still am not any good at games!) are the ones I remember most - graphics, and oh man the music. At some point we got rid of that game and PC and well, I'd moved on - but the memory stuck, even after all these years. Anyway yeah - for one it's pretty mad to see what this game used to be. In my head I basically remembered this being a real Sonic game (I had no understanding of its origins then ofc, also as a kid my brother and I called it 'Sonic 2D' cos that was easier, so for years I thought there was a real Sonic game called 'Sonic 2D' lol) because even in 2003 it looked damn good - so to see it start out at the level of a very amateur fan game is quite amusing actually. It's *insane* tho to see how the game progressed from what I remembered from '03... from Version 2 totally changing things up to Version 2.2 (basically Version 3 tbh) changing things up again... it's crazy. I have intense nostalgia for that old version of the game but the new ones look fantastic. People have compared seeing this game grow to watching a child grow from birth through to graduation and yeah - I agree. In my case, it's like finding the social media of a childhood friend you haven't seen in literal decades, only to see they've totally spread their wings and are living their best life. I'd like to meet my childhood friend in person again I think; for as much as we'd drifted apart, I still think we'd have a lot in common - maybe more than ever, actually. My hats off to the devs; this is truly a labour of love. Thank you for the amazing gaming memories - when I fix my PC, I'm going to download it; both the most recent version and the one from my childhood. I have a lot of catching up with an old friend to do - a stroll down memory lane, and a look towards the present and future.

Great stuff! You should do one for Techno Hill Zone as well, since it's the second oldest zone (since Demo 2 I believe) with a largely preserved layout, for Act 1 at least. I'd love to see the progression to v2.2.
It's so interesting how, through all the versions, the overall level design has stayed mostly the same. Yes, definite polish has been made, but there are still areas that are nearly exact throughout all of the (3D, obviously) versions.
Thank you for playing the actual games rather than srb2 the past, the past is a good way for newcomers to see the old days, but nothing feels better than cracking a can a coke and just sitting down and playing the final demo.

It actually WAS made in MS Paint. (SRB1 at least)

I remember playing this in one of the early 1.0 versions when I was a teen. To see this project become what it is now is mind blowing to me.
I like how the first 3d version of the game used Saturn sprites for Sonic, and now there's a mod that adds Saturn Sonic (XSonic). My, how far we've come.
Honestly I have no idea what any of this is, but It was a fun watch.
Thanks. I appreciate it.
look it up SRB2, its a really awesome fangame
The new version is insanely good
@Liam Young There is auto camera, lol
They did a small update adding it.
Go to the controls and Playstyle
Same.
@Liam Young run the game through steam. add it as a non steam game. it should work then. (controller)
So that's why I remember the game looking and sounding different when I was a little kid!!

5:39 - Did Sonic just flip the Flicky?
"flip the Flicky" XD
No, and I didn’t see him use his middlefinger on the flicky
The transition at 1:17 was actually very well made.
Working on a new video about Techno Hill Zone! EDIT: it's out! ruclips.net/video/k4ykb0VGrhU/видео.html
God bless old games for giving me a sense of nostalgia I can't find anywhere else.
As someone who's played 2.0, 2.1, and 2.2, I never truly appreciated the differences between them until now. The progress is astonishing.

8:39 that pitch down sounds creepy
Derpy The Hedgeone Indeed, no idea what happened to the MIDI there.
@@DylanDude Since that instrument uses a lot of pitch-bending in the MIDI, I'm guessing something went wrong with the cues used to do that.
@@MarsJenkar It probably doesn't reset the pitch bend to 0 (perfectly on-key) at the beginning of the MIDI, causing it to stay lower-pitched until the guitar plays the first note with pitch bending.
Thanks for the trip down memory lane! I still remember the TGF version of the game, and actually played through most of SRB1 back when I was active in the SFGHQ community. I played a ton out of the 2003 build across many years, but hadn't checked on the game since then until SRB2Kart made a name for themselves. I'm blown away by the improvements made for v2.2. I think I may be overdue another playthrough. 😁
It's insane how different 2.2 is compared to 2.1.
@@DylanDude hey Dylan quick question, do you know what the Srb2 Mega archive is?
Are you serious?! Sonic Robo Blast 2 has been around since 1998?! Jeez, and I found out about this game in early 2010s (2015 to be precise). You really do learn something new every day.
Beginning: This is so janky lol
Middle: Ooh this looks pretty good
End: I N E E D I T
I played this game once around 2015 and again recently.
I was wondering if some stuff changed because I remembered the game differently xD
Thanks for the video!
You’re welcome!
I can’t believe that the game started with this, even though the project was like that, but the developer didn’t give up, this is a good example of how we shouldn’t give up
Yeah
I discovered it 3 weeks ago. I love it!
I was there back at the final demo, around 1.09.4, with the addbot command the Invader Zim tag level. Man, nostalgic vibes. It's truly amazing how far this game has improved, and growing with it feels even more amazing!
Wow SRB2 Is really amazing, and to know that it's part of so many people childhood (like mine) is just great.
This feels nostalgic even though I only discovered srb2 recently
0:23 I don't know what that noise was, but I'm pretty sure that it just sliced my brain in four pieces.
I remember playing the pre-2.0 version back in middle school. It's amazing to see how far this game has come
Final demo was apart of my childhood
Nothing beats GFZ1 Xmas.. the atmosphere of the level is just pure calmness
16:44 Hoop sound effect from Nights
At 21:00 during the boss fight, it seems eggman is programmed to move backwards and upwards each time hes hit. Which is why he goes far out of range
From going from a memorable flash game to being the most liked Doom engine platformer, this was the best fan game ever to be created in the history of all Sonic fan games.
Damn, I got it at 2.1 and I never knew it used to be a 2D platforming Sonic game, I honestly glad you made this as it makes me appreciate the game, even more, seeing how it's changed over the years into the titan it is now.
Got it at 2.0
I loved listening to the BGM evolve over the years!
I think I'm glad that I waited till 2.2. The slopes make such a huge difference.
I hope we get a VR version.
Why VR?
@@ikagura To have it in stereoscopic 3D, and across at least 110° of your field of vision.
@@MoonlightFox You can technically have a bigger FoV if you mod the game...
@@ikagura oh yes, I have mine set a little wider than the standard, but it's not the same as it is in VR. You'd have to sit really close to a very curved monitor to get a similar effect.
There's a mod that allows you to play in VR
This is giving me Sonic Xtreme vibes and I dig it
The first few 3D versions actually use Sonic's sprites from Xtreme
the game sure has evolved since its first release!
I literally just started playing this game maybe a month ago, i just think its amazing the amount of hard work that went into this game, this game is 3 years older than me which is insane. I would give money to the amazing people behind this game.
I love how the level is still recognizable in the earlier versions
SRB2 is my favorite childhood game, when the first 2.2 trailer came out I was like: "What??" I was so excited for the release, when it came out, I was super excited about the game and played it! I was finally able to finish the game for the first time though..In this version! Yes, this version. The 2.2 one. I was never able to finish the game since 2.0, now I was finally able to do it! This game is part from my heart man!
This is like a monument to "You have to start somewhere"
the fact that this game is older than me by 1 year
God, i remember this game! Me and my cousin would play it together when we were 6, i was the controls and he was the camera because of how many issues we had as kids! Nice
I've known about this game since 2014. But to know this game is older than me by SIX YEARS is mind blowing.

Great stuff! You should do one for Techno Hill Zone as well, since it's the second oldest zone (since Demo 2 I believe) with a largely preserved layout, for Act 1 at least. I'd love to see the progression to v2.2.
Thanks! I've been thinking of doing videos for both THZ and CEZ.

in 2.2 devs said "hey what if we update literally the entire game"
Final demo is when I found out about SRB2. Can't believe it's been 17 years..
I still am in denial that sonic robo blast 2 is this old
3:42 Wow SRB2 in 2000 have The Sprites of Sonic xtreme
💀
It’s nice to see where it began just to see it now it’s so beautiful
This game never left the late 90s/early 2000s look until very very recently. Wow
It's so interesting how, through all the versions, the overall level design has stayed mostly the same. Yes, definite polish has been made, but there are still areas that are nearly exact throughout all of the (3D, obviously) versions.
If it ain't broke don't try fixing it
18:37 i can see that the crawlas was updated like the v2.2 style in v2.0
Nice To See The Sonic Xtreme Sprites in The Early Builds :)

Actually he was Christmas Sonic sinfe at that time some sprites of Demo 1 Sonic were completed
Demo 1?! I don’t see any difference apart from the fact he has less shading.
I remember playing the 2003 demo many years ago. It's beautiful seeing how far this game has come
Thank you for playing the actual games rather than srb2 the past, the past is a good way for newcomers to see the old days, but nothing feels better than cracking a can a coke and just sitting down and playing the final demo.
Not counting the 2 instances you had to use the past, but thx for the most part
But i love Sonic because he always super fast.
Im surprised how it went to sonic extreme's sonic to an completely original sonic sprite
It's like the Saturn game we never got! I love it!!
It started very bad, It ended very awesome
Those sweet, sweet midis.
They will have a special place in my soul forever dude
I remember getting 2.0 back in 09. Ah, what I'd do to go back in time.
SRB2 2.2 now looks like a modern game, shocking
