    Since this video exploded, I'll just mention for those who didn't care for it - I understand. This was one of my early "Lore of Final Fantasy" videos, when I didn't research stuff as thoroughly, had an awful microphone and didn't enunciate well, and was still finding my style as an editor. Later videos are much improved all-around, so give them a watch too and help the algorithm pick them up like it has this one. :)

      I didn't know they were in the remake, thanks for the heads up. I remember coming across on in the Northern Crater of the original FF7. My friend was playing and we thought it was cute as it slowly walked toward. Then at about 3/4 of the way to the party we thought "My as well drop him", then he tanked 2 9999 hits and knifed a character n we were like "OH, 💩". Then he Grudged and knifed another. We had to Knights of the Round him to get out of that battle alive. Ever since then I've held back and had no mercy in any FF game for these guys.

    You gotta wonder about the inspiration behind Tonberries. I think ghost stories are off the mark, tho.
    Since FFXI says they were once Zilart (human analogues) and transformed into fish creatures, it reminds me a lot of "The Shadow Over Innsmouth" by Lovecraft, where an isolated town slowly turns into creepy but very powerful fishlike creatures.
    It may be coincidence. But given how many fantasy games draw inspiration from Lovecraft, it's an interesting similarity!

    The first time I ever encountered one of any kind was the Master Tonberry in the final dungeon of FF7, and yeeeeeah, it left a lasting impression for sure...toughest regular enemy in that game bar-none, not even a 4x Cut that does 9999 per hit can take it out in one go, so I either use the Dazers item to freeze it (so it can't counter with "Everyone's Grudge") or go nuclear on it with a Knights of the Round summon. (And of course, the first time I ever encountered a Master Tonberry - I had neither 4x Cut or Knights of the Round...it was ugly and disastrous to say the least.)

    • @PGIFilms
      @PGIFilms 2 года назад +2

      Since morphing Master Tonberry in the North Cave was the only way to get more Ribbon accessories to equip everyone in the party I eventually came up with a few ways that made taking them on a little easier without needing to rely on super powerful materia like KOTR or burning thoru a bunch of MP casting multiple spells. Initially, I would have 1 character with Ribbon (I forgot where, but I know you get/find at least 1 before the North Cave) and paired materia Added Effect + Odin/Destruct on their armor and a 2nd character with Safety Bit and paired materia Added Effect + Hades on their armor. This would protect at least 2 characters from the annoying status effects and instant death until I could grind enough to get more Ribbons and more materia.
      To beat Master Tonberry all you need is the Death Force (Admantoise) Enemy Skill and Hades/Poison Materia (or Cauldron items) --- Cast Death Force on each character and they will be immune to the instant death of Tonberry's knife attack for the rest of the battle (as long as they aren't KO'd by Everyone's Grudge) follow with casting either Hades/Poison (or throw a Cauldron) at Tonberry to poison him then WAIT AND MAKE NO FURTHER INPUTS just let Tonberry take his turns. With Death Force you don't have to worry about his knife attack and the poison will damage him each round without triggering Everyone's Grudge and eventually kill him. I counted how many turns of poison damage it took to kill him and hit him with Morph (and transform him into a Ribbon) before the last turn of poison could do damage. After, getting Ribbons for all 8 characters I would just let the poison finish off Tonberry in every fight afterwards.

    • @ahenn84
      @ahenn84 2 года назад +1

      @@PGIFilms That's brilliant, I never really thought of using Death Force (even though I actually have all 4 Enemy Skill materia with all abilities filled) along with Hades/Poison. When it comes to Ribbons, I remember 2 off the top of my head that you can find (one is at Temple of the Ancients, and another is through a hidden wall at Gaea's Cliff), I don't recall if I ever tried morphing Master Tonberries for more though...I should dig out my game and memory card and check hahaha.

      @@ahenn84 Final Fantasy 7 (along with FF8, FF9, and FF Tactics) are the main reason I still have a PS1, a PS2 and a backup PS2 so I can pull them out and replay them. Every time I see a Final Fantasy 7/7-remake/8/9/10/12/Tactics video (or similar games) pop up on the home page or recommended list I have to fight the urge to dig out those PS1 and PS2 Final Fantasy games, because that's time I should be spending on other things. I deliberately put all my gaming system stuff in storage until I get through some major projects around the house done, but definitely going to get in some classic Final Fantasy play time after all of it.

    • @Absolute585
      @Absolute585 2 года назад

      I did find a pattern when fighting Tonberries in FF7. It was a very long time ago, so I'm not sure if I remember clearly, but I think they walked up to you after every attack you launched, and if you skip the last attack before his last walk towards you, he will not attack and just walk back to his original position. I think it was something like that.

    • @PGIFilms
      @PGIFilms 2 года назад

      @@Absolute585 If I remember correctly, Tonnberry had only 3 actions he would do on his turn: (1) Walk forward (right) towards party member, (2) Walk left/right (up/down) to line up with a different character, but not get closer, and (3) Attack with instant-kill knife stab (if directly in front of character) and jump/teleport back to starting point after striking.
      The knife attack was always the slow and deliberate walk to wards the party. I can't remember if his changing targets (walking up/down without advancing closer) was random or determined by which character hit him last with a magical spell/summon. He would almost always counter with "Everyone's Grudge" when physically struck. I think countering with "Everyone's Grudge" was maybe 80% of the time. I know it wasn't 100% because there were a few times I was surprise to see Cloud get in a hit and NOT see Tonberry wave his lantern to instantly hit Cloud back with 9999 damage.

    Final Fantasy prior to XVI: Cute stabby guys.
    Final Fantasy XVI: Cultish and extremely sadist humanoids that inflict curses of incurable pain on humans which strengths them and something they find joy in. Oh. And the King has a giant knife that is practically a sword.

      @@DwarvenCenturion615 Oh, that's a simple one to answer - while some games don't provide any lore on them, those that do consistently say they're creations of a lost civilization, and even when that isn't specified, they're usually found in ancient worlds and trans-dimensional locations. It's plausible one of the games I've not played mentions they're modern creations, but all the ones I have say otherwise.

    Their annoying ever since FF6 but in that game Odin/Break can kill them instantly FF7 for BOTH types I won't ever fight without KoTR and in FF6 On the SNES/PS1 version you can just Vanish and Doom them but in FF6 they only use physical hits Pearl or Step mine.
