We sell beets by the pound, they are topped and washed. Some customers are by as much as 40 lbs or more. This year, two orders were 60 lbs. About 75% are reds beets and 25% are golden beets. Our minimum order is five lbs, but most orders are least 20 lbs. Here in south central Washington state, I can plant at least three crops of beets during the growing season. The beds are three rows wide, each row 6 to 8 inches apart. Beets are planted with a Hoss seeder using pelleted seed.
If a home gardener has a surplus, instead of trying to sell it at market themselves, why not sell it to someone who is a market gardener and already goes to market? The price would be less, but it would be 1 large sale and get rid of everything at once...
My farmers market requires us to grow our own produce. This is my 1st year doing market garden with about 600 sq growing ft. My biggest problem is secession growing. I have gaps in between harvests
@@herbertbisbey215 I still have gaps. It's okay as long as your gaps aren't months long. Until you have enough land in production just keep doing that.
@@Butterandjelly82 that is true but on a very small scale it's unlikely. I personally think it's criminal that selling homegrown vegetables can be illegal.
I keep big zucchinis at room temp for months, but they have to be big. They store no problem, but I mostly store them for my animals. I freeze them for my own use, also dry them, but that's a lot of work.
@@farmtablewest5991 Not sure if you're referring to dried or the big ones 😅, but dried I mostly add them to stews and the like. The big ones are ok, but the seeds are big and the middle part in general mushy. So small, fresh ones are def better, but these are edible. Dried and powdered it works well in doughs (also soups, stews)! And shrinks A LOT so it doesen't claim much space in storage.
Good vid chap 👍 Interesting, very different market in NZ Similar sounding season right at the bottom of NZ, but zucchini needs to be in a greenhouse to do well here. I think our issue is more with rain and lack of sunlight. We do get frosts and hail just not really bad often. Root crops and brassicas grow well outdoors. Growing zones really don't seem to compare in completely different area's. Almost like it's another continent 🤣
Ahhhhhh I see. Yea I agree plant zones are only barely relevant. So many other factors. We can grow cucerbits outside because we get zero rain and control water through irrigation. Big plus but downside is yields go down a lot because of the cold. Nights in 50s all summer long. Some weeks we barely get a crop because it's not warm enough but it all evens out over the whole season.
Not really. My prices aren't much more if at all than organic at the store. Sell to the rich is fine but with this I think the real money is selling volume at retail price to upper middle class. Unless you're in a huge high income population that's kinda tough with this.
I have a garden with 11 35 ft beds that I made this month. Plus 6 peach trees. a parent is dying so ill prob be living in the garden for a bit. I have a commercial bee farm so I work that a lot.

Nice. How big are your beds and what's your yield per bed?
You have to deduct the cost of seed and amendments, but the enjoyment more than makes up for it.
The seed and amendments are trivial. On average %10 in the worst case. The point I'm trying to make is the amount you can grow in a tiny space.

It does. Ladybugs help and I find the healthier the plant the less aphids I have

That would work of course. I'm just throwing ideas out there because with this style it's really easy to grow too much food.

The store is already super expensive. You've definitely mastered the economics of "sell to the rich".
