Winter Is Coming | What we're planting now to eat in January
If you're anything like me, you don't want the farm fresh vegetables you've been enjoying from your garden all summer to go away once it's starts snowing. Here in Wyoming that snow can start as soon as the first week in October. So on this small farm we make the most out of every square foot of greenhouse space we have to plant winter vegetables that we can harvest in January.
If you have any kind of greenhouse or even a cold frame you can do everything I talk about in this video. You just need to follow the winter planting schedule below, and protect with 1-3 layers of floating row cover.
The key is staying on schedule, and experimenting every year, because each climate and context is di...

The Fall Garden | 2 crops for the price of 1 in Zone 5

Fall is one of my favorite times of year on the farm because all the planning and planting is pretty much over. All that's left is to reap the rewards of the summer work, which basically is just harvesting food until it's too cold. Here in Wyoming, we will be harvesting food outside until early December most likely and it just gets tastier as the frost sets in. In this video I show you 9 exampl...
5 Fast Growing Vegetables for Zone 5 Gardeners little time & space

How I grew 36lbs of food in 1 hour

I started this tiny 63 ft ² garden back in early June with the hopes of growing about $200-300 worth of food by October. Life got in the way and I had to basically focus 100% of my energy on the farm until right about now. So this space has basically been neglected the whole time and only been watered by sprinkler 1-2 times a week. We still have at least $122 (36lbs) worth of food in the tiny g...

@@SaaidAdiwhat have you done so far, to find a farm job?
@@davidmgilbreath I did not find it, brother
But I will keep searching
@@SaaidAdi you live in Morocco? Why do want to work on a Wyoming farm?
Do you get much sun outside in the winter? I do not see temperature such as the cold much of a problem, for growing, but a lack of light could be a problem, for growing. During the winter it is normally cloudy, so this could be a problem, for growing outside. If clouds block the sun a lot during the winter then I think this could prevent proper growth. Having a backup plan might be a good idea. Maybe considering growing indoors as well can be done, but not as much. If what you are trying to grow outside does not grow, or properly grow then at least you would have grown something indoors, so then maybe you could transplant what you have grown indoors to outdoors when the weather is nicer.
Sun is low which is why nothing grows only harnestjng.
@@farmtablewest5991 I tried growing outdoors, and indoors. I was able to do both. If you want to grow well you can still do it. I only grew a little bit of food indoors, and outdoors just to see if I could do it, and I was able to do it. I published a video on my youtube channel showing what I grew outdoors, and the germination process was faster than I expected. Sometimes it is good to experiment to try to learn something new, and by doing research as well this can prove to be beneficial in the long run. The next time I try growing food I plan to growing more of it, and hopefully enough food, for the entire year. I might be preserving food as well the next time I grow food.
What variety green onions is that?

❤ thank you@@farmtablewest5991
Wow , very nice
Thank you! Cheers!
This channel is great. I want to take your course if you think it would be helpful for a beginner market farmer here in California... I took the Neversink course, awesome content, but I really appreciate the detail you go into in all your videos. Thanks so much for all your hard work! 💚
Yeah, I am curious too. I have a tenth of an acre in production, now but could be better. Taking over the full 1/2 acre next year with a 30x96 greenhouse. Just curious if the course would be applicable, or if it's oriented to the backyard gardener? I love that we are in similar zones, so seems super pertinent.
To be honest the neversink course is better for a market farmer than my Gardening course. But it still might be helpful for you because it's a different style. It is more geared for the home gardener just trying to put food on the table with very little time but it might be worth it.
My course really more for the back yard gardener but it's only $280 so it still might be helpful to you. The Neversink course is the absolute best information if you want to actually farm and sell veggies. If that's what you want buy that course.
@@farmtablewest5991 Thanks so much for the info!!! 💚
Dude thank you for putting out this content. Im zone 5b illinois. Love this channel
Thanks so much for appreciating it. Where at in IL I'm from Woodstock.
@farmtablewest5991 Nice I'm In Tinley Park. I Just have a regular residential size lot of 9k sqft. I make the most of what I have. One Day I hope to have a one acre or so to put high tunnels for winter production. I am learning what I can with low tunnels but such a pain lol. I lean hard On microgreens, mushrooms, lettuce, heirloom tomatoes, and herbs. You've got some great content. I'm practicing my celery starts for next season. God Bless
A bunch of B.S.
Namaste
My market garden is very similar crops and size and production. Nice work!
So nice of you
Every market i get people complaining about not knowing where to grab the bunches of say kale or beets when theyre stacked beautifully like yours are. I also get people causing complete avalanches because they are going for bunches on the bottom. That ever happen to you? Minor annoyances but still something I think about after each market
Yes. It's all part of the fun.
Barely halfway through the video and went to the description to see if you have courses! Yay!!!
YES! The course is for turning your back yard into a grocery store using similar techniques to my farm but even less work!
Where do you buy your grafted tomatoes?
I grow them and graft them myself.
Young radish greens are tasty sautéed in evoo, onions, garlic , fresh herbs and hot peppers
They are delicious!
My penis smells like cheese.
Great tips! thanks for sharing.
You are so welcome!
Your great Totally going to buy your course Thank You
Hope you enjoy it! Nows a great time to start learning!
I've never heard of Tokyo Bekana before. Thanks for the tip 🤘
No problem 👍
Thank you for taking the time to do these
Thanks you for taking the time to watch them!
Because celery takes soooo long from seed to planting, I buy plugs from a nursery.
It does but so little effort to grow.
Thanks. I produce about 100k a year in honey and bee products but I want to cut costs and use my land more to get good food. I have a 3000 sq ft protected by deer fence and use no till methods.
I had been reading about honey production and lots of people were saying it's hard to make a profit, just lots of expenses, do you find that true? Do you mostly earn through the products you make instead of just the honey?
@@mockingbird991 I make bee related products like lotion bars and soaps to cash flow currently. I am on my 3rd year so we shall see. other side in Texas I can rent out my hives as well. honey is just one factor others are queen and nucs.
Sounds like a future revenue source.
@@farmtablewest5991 people go nuts over my lotion bars. I was an army chemist years ago so I can make a lot of cool things if needed with my bee by products. Right now growing food is to cut on food costs then expand from that.
I enjoyed this video immensely. It was so entertaining!
I'm so glad!
I really enjoyed this video. You have such a fun and engaging style!
Oh thank you!
4k before expenses. After all operating costs how much does it come out to. :)
I'll do a video on that in December at the end of the year. It's complicated because I'm basically reinvesting all profit right now into infrastructure. Gross Profit is very roughly 70% after labor and expenses.

I don't think you wanna move to Wyoming and my season is almost over. Maybe next year but it's tough to move here.
How can I contact you?@@farmtablewest5991
Very good advice. Great you like Charles Dowding’s approach. Parsley is a biennial so will seed in year two if you can over winter it.
Yea it does go to seed so it's not really a perennial.
Sir, is possible to get discount on course?
Not right now. The course will teach you how to grow $1200 worth of Veggies on 250 square feet your first year.
More click bait from a yank, $4,000 a week from 1/2 acre, only if you are growing drugs. pull the other one it's got bells on.
“Earn $4,000 a week, all year…for 3 weeks!!!”
What do you use against blight disease?
Really good air circulation, pruning, vents, and hybrid blight resistant tomatoes.
Organic?
Not certified but better than organic.
@@farmtablewest5991 what fertilizer do you use?
That pricing is dead on brotha. Here in kansas city they are going for $4.87 lb for organic slice and $6.50ish for heirloom cherry and slicers. Awesome point and excellent grafting techniques. Your channel rocks!
Thanks so much man. Glad it's the same in Kansas!
Tomatoes are a cornerstone to a market garden 100% true. I grew a bunch of roma/san marzono, orange being my favorite, but the customer wants the slicer
Yep exactly. The bland red slicer sells 2 to 1 compared to the others.
Do I need to have a walking tractor? Im trying to decide between no dig way or like JMartin way. ..
I would say no. Adds a lot more complication in my opinion but I've never used one so maybe it is worth it.

@@farmtablewest5991 ??
When i say u yield 4000 a week, is that net of expenses? If not have u a figure u net after all expenses are averaged out over the summer period?
No that is revenue not net profit. I will probably come out with a video explaining profit at the end of this year.
I have land and can grow but its hard to find buyers. What are some tips to find buyers? I want to be part of the new frontier in farming
Start with a small farmers market and build relationships with every person that walks to your booth. Get to know their name and life and watch opportunities grow with time. Most importantly become the best grower at that market.
Cody is my birthplace and 2nd home. I miss Wyoming.
It's a great place!
Is there a way to transplant or have a nursery without grow lights? Thank you, God bless
You can use a windowsill but in my course I show you how to create an led light shelf for growing that's less than $100. Bettee quality plants that way.
I use plan old LED shop lights to start my plants.
The pumpkin vines look awesome
Thank you! Trying to grow melons in our climate. So hard but we'll see.
I’ll show you what I mean when my indoor set up is ready and functioning properly 😂. At first I won’t need a whole lot of ethylene gas but as it grows I’ll probably have to switch to a 5 gallon pale
Interesting. Please do.
@@farmtablewest5991 I have some tests with pumkin and the plant was twice the size and started to grow monster flowers and lots of them from a young age but I’ll make a set up on tomato’s
Do you wanna know a secret 😅 there is one more thing to boost productivity that I don’t really know if ppl are very aware of.
Ok
@@farmtablewest5991 using small amounts of ethylene gas pumped from a 5 gallon pale to the stem of the plants it will increase the amount of fruiting points and increases root growth as well
is 4000 a week year round or is it just for your summer season?
Summer. Winter were going to shoot for $2000/week but we'll see.
@@farmtablewest5991 really awesome. I wish you all the best!
Check out Johnnys Defiant and Mountain magic tomatoes. I'm just a backyard gardener and I've been getting non stop huge harvests every day since early July from just 10 plants I've been giving them to all my neighbors and they're saying they've never tasted tomatoes so good. Right now there's literally hundreds of ripening tomatoes on the plants. Defiant is a mid sized slicer and mountain magic is a salad tomato larger than a cherry tomato.
Yea I've heard of those. Greenhouse growing needs a lot more specialized varieties for our production.
I'm trying my best on tomatoes, hope one day i will make 😊
You can do it!
Goals man , I got 1 25x25 bed and I'm going to master it then build another, it's hard tho I'm putting $0 into it , a large tarp or some plastic for solarization would be worth its weight in gold tbh I got way more than 1/2 acre so I'm going to build slowly over time hopefully I can create some very good soil by time I'm a reasonable size , I crush a bag of charcoal each week and make as much compost as time permits , eventually it will all get into a bed and get covered by somthing
Sounds like a plan
Really enjoying your unique videos. Not many market gardeners on RUclips providing the details you provide. Keep it up. Greetings from a prospective market gardener in Ireland.
Thanks, will do!
This is my favorite new channel this year. I appreciate all your hard work. Not sure if you mentioned it in the video, but what root stock are you using for the different tomato graftings? I'd be especially interested to know what you're using with the Sakuras.
