    Steve is so on point.
    You have enough information today to solidify your confirmation bias rather than challenge what you actually SEE.
    I played defense. Speed didn’t scare me. A precise route runner didn’t always scare me either, because I can read the QB and can watch film to predict your routes.
    Speed mixed with aggression(anger) and wiggle scared me. And if you were thick or could jump… that worried me too.

    • @loud_laughter
      @loud_laughter Месяц назад

      Also, some guys are satisfied with a catch, or a first down.
      But some receivers are upset every time they don’t score or embarrass someone.
      They look different. They feel different.
      I’d rather ask DBs who I should pick in the draft. Or just Steve who is a WR savant.

    I use data analytics every day. Both in my professional life and in analyzing football statistics as a hobby. Guys like Steve provide additional data points that my models don't capture and that I'm not knowledgeable enough to see. Subject matter expert observations can be used in conjunction with data even if the SME doesn't use hard-core data themselves.

    Stats shouldn't be a role in comps...They are all situational. If you have a crappy QB, or O line, your stats will suffer. I compare Burton more to Hines Ward orTerry McLaurin. Tough, Smart, Quick, great separator, great hands, Smooth. He plays angry like Steve did which I love.

  • @Stackerman557
    @Stackerman557 2 месяца назад +1

    Great breakdown again, Steve! Really appreciate it. As someone who has never put on pads and only "scouts" college players casually, I'm curious about the extent to which some of these bad or otherwise undesirable habits you've pointed out in the prospects you've evaluated are fixable. Obviously you can't teach intangibles, like pure size and speed, but if a guy has enough work ethic, are all of these areas of improvement (like body catching, running sloppy routes, and having trouble tracking the deep ball) ones that you would consider to be teachable with enough reps? If so, which techniques, in your experience, are the easiest and hardest to teach? Is it always player-to-player, or do lots of young receivers tend to have difficulty improving in similar areas? Furthermore, are there some non-physical aspects of the game that you've either got, or you don't, no matter how much you practice?

    The 40 time on the track is IRRELEVANT. Their speed when wearing 30 lbs of football gear and their ability to accelerate is far more relevant. Jerry Rice ran a 4.6 40 but in pads, in a REAL game, he would leave people in the dust.

When I watched Burton's tape, the abilities stuck out to me, but I also saw the rawness and "dawg" mentality, making contested tough catches, maybe not getting a lot of yac, but tough ran yac, and all that while being on the shorter end of receivers, I thought he reminded me a lot of you. The most important aspects of football, at any position, are qualitative. Stats are heavily influenced by scheme, surrounding talent, and opponents. Measurables only tell you about physical potential. Predictive analytics based on quantitative properties assume that the qualitative properties like football IQ, motivation, toughness, work ethic, etc. are fairly equal.

    Doug Baldwin was a one trick pony. So is Burton. The NFL combine comp for CJ Stroud was Jared Goff.. look it up

      Great WR prospect with major character concerns, who will fall to the end of Day 2 or even Day 3, because of that. Yep. That sounds like a guy the Steelers would take.

    I remember when Jerry Rice was coming out in the Draft. Mississippi Valley State.
    I loved him. The experts said that Jerry was too slow, played poor competition and did not have the body to hold up. too tall too skinny.
    It took a Smart guy to see what was really there.
