    I really like when you all interact with turkey biologists, we get the benefits of the conversation and the facts. Thank you for that. And of course we are getting valuable information watching you hunt and then explain to us what and why it worked or didn't. 71 years old and this old dog is learning new tricks.

    Scratching worked well for us in 2023! Brought two separate toms in and we tagged out with 2 birds by 10 am on opening day in MN!

    A few years ago I found 3 dead long beards in a pile during deer season not far from the gut pit where we disposed of our deer carcasses. I showed the wildlife biologist that managed our property and he determined they had gorged themselves with maggots and got botchulism which killed them. From then on we made sure to lime our deer carcasses then bury them at the end of the season. I'm sure this kills many more turkeys than we realize.

    Great job on the conservation segment at the end. You guys, the biologists and Vet did a great job explaining everything and didn’t dumb it down too much. When you give that much time to explain a complicated subject you are doing a great service to the public! Keep doing these segments and consider breaking them out into their own videos if you think that will increase its reach. It could prove helpful for non-hunters or anti hunters to see content like this. Thank you!

    THANK YOU for the DNR part of this video. As an Iowa turkey hunter I've had dozens of conversations with other hunters, and we were convinced they gave up on our turkey decline and just focused on our deer. You guys are truly amazing.

    Next year you guys need to get to northern MI. I'm on a 8 year streak of tagging out on public with quite honestly pretty minimal scouting. I got two friends of mine into turkey hunting this year as well and we managed to get them two nice toms as well. I'm not sure why, but the turkey hunting here is pretty underrated.

    It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to realize that the increased predators such as hawks, owls, eagles, coyote, fox, bobcats and fishers are knocking the shit out of turkey populations along with disease and cold wet weather in the hatching season. Our region here in mid-central Pa has been decimated and may never recover.

      Far upstate NY here... 10 years ago it was child's play to get into flocks of mature birds 20+ strong. Today you don't see any in the fields, I've got 200 miles on my boots this spring and literally have not got a single gobble. When I do see a bird it's been a lone hen, 2 on a great day. It's a major struggle , and my poor wife has been tagging along this year, all I can do for her is tell stories of the "good old days" (does 10 years ago count?). Deer numbers aren't doing much better. An evening drive 10 years ago we'd see 3-400 deer on an hour joyride late afternoon day before opening morning. Today.... you'll see 10. Meanwhile NY State Department of Conservation acts as though nothing is going on. Personally, I feel the cold/warm/cold/warm winters we get now creates a base layer of ice on the forest floors, browsing animals simply aren't getting the food to fuel the work it takes to get that fuel. Compounded by predators that can navigate icy terrain much easier than prey animals. Somebody needs to say something and nobody seems to want to.

    I have been thinking maybe for a couple of years we only get one bird for the season. Non-resident will go into a lottery or one bird. I am willing to pay the same price for a couple years for one bird. Possibly shutting down the fall hunt for one year or two years to help the cause.

  • @rangel20ish

    You know Iowa probably has a really high predation rate on turkeys, take more predators and put chufa plots on state land,

  • @jesseriley4994
    @jesseriley4994 Год назад

    Average harvest reports in Iowa are around 12k birds/year for the last 15 years. A lot of surrounding states are cutting out fall seasons and rolling back the number of tags a hunter can get in the spring. Should we as hunters take it upon ourselves to only harvest one bird when we're allowed two? I feel it will help the issue of less birds, but maybe mask the real issues of declining bird populations.

    In the 1980's predator trapping was profitable and predator numbers were low, today no one is trapping. Skunks, opossum, raccoon, fox, bobcat, coyote, hawks, owls, mink, weasel, rats, etc. Numbers are at all time high! They all have to eat.
