this got on people's recommended lately so i just wanna clear some things up :)
firstly, him being trans and bisexual is a personal headcanon. i am not saying he is trans or bisexual, or even that it was intended by dan harmon for him to be viewed that way. however, i believe that once a show, movie, book or any form of media has been released, the public are now the owners of it and can interpret it how they want. some of these moments can be viewed as trans-coded or bisexual-coded. they were not intended to be, but they definitely can be. if you don't view it, that's fine. this video wasn't made for you. there are plenty of trans and bi people who do relate to these moments and can make the connections. his constant overcompensating desire to perform his masculinity can be viewed as him feeling inadequate as a trans man and consistently trying to prove himself both to society and to himself. it can also be viewed as the experience of a cis man who feels inadequate in his masculinity in a society that pressures men into a toxic masculine culture, especially growing up without a father figure in his life. both are completely valid interpretations, and a mix of both is definitely valid as well.
secondly, some have pointed out there are moments that do not feel trans or bisexual. i understand. many of these moments are not explicitly about coded attraction to men and women or discussing a transgender experience. there's a mix of moments that feel like "bisexual culture", something that exists in queer spaces. it can be argued that this is stereotypical, but as a bi person i personally think it's fine and is what prompted me to make this video. some of these moments are not bisexual culture and they are simply things i relate to and project onto. as a bi person i am projecting. it is a youtube video. it is not that serious.
others have specifically pointed to certain inclusions, such as scenes with his dad and pierce's dad. i think that the scenes with pierce's dad are firstly, him sticking up for the queer community in the episode 'advanced gay' which is linked to his own potential queer identity which he could be protecting. secondly, he is projecting the issues with his father onto pierce's dad. regarding his issues with his father, i believe his constant need to perform stems from the lack of a father figure in his life which has led to him overcompensating his masculinity. that and his father said "self-made man" which can be read as trans, as trans men literally have to build themselves.

Honestly, I completely disagree with the idea of Jeff being trans (Bi-sexual I can't really argue for or against,). But I have to give you props for acknowledging that it's your own headcanon and not necessarily what Dan intended with the character, and you know what if that's how you enjoy the show go for it.

There's one thing you overlooked about Jeff's icon-ness.
He's also an autistic icon.
And yes I know that abed is canonically autistic. But trust me. They're a masked/unmasked love/hate autistic power couple only rivaled by death note and I guess Sherlock Holmes..just more like regular relatable people than ultra special savants really
Like first episode Jeff clocks abed as Autistic. Everyone else considered it an out of pocket insult while BOTH abed ans Jeff took it as more of a statement of fact (though with Jeff also treating it as a reason to brush off abed. Like gay people calling each other the f slur when they get mad at each other and it's the straight people who get most mad about it)
But like even when Jeff was living with abed he became more unmasked ans started becoming very similar to abed and just like of scared of being Like That for too long.
Jeff routinely seems to be the most triggered by abeds autistic behavior out of everyone in the core group.
Jeff routinely shows he puts a lot of thought and effort into putting in the minimal amount of effort into something he has to do just to appease some system and hierarchy he doesn't really understand or agree with.
his insecurity issues are all linked back to the core experience of masking and working to present yourself as the ideal socially accepted version of himself. Which makes him feel inauthentic and shallow in a never ending cycle that went to some pretty dark places to cope with the concept of aging and losing that ability to present as the societal ideal Everyman.
His own parental abandonment issues exactly mirror abeds. Amd his cgi mental health breakdown experience was also similar to abed. But even more directly influenced by the media he was hyper attached to than abeds was. More pop culture media influenced than abed while in crisis/age regressing!!
The way he memorized and manipulates social norms to his advantage, just like abed. Thinking he's pointing out basic practical observations while everyone else finds his outlook inhuman or cruel.
And he just has the energy of a Jordan Peterson Andrew Tate fanboy rizz guru that is actually pretty off putting to most people (except when he stops performing that brand of toxic masculinity)

Bisexual, definitely, and I can somewhat see the trans part and that’s cool, but I kind of want a full explanation for the trans thing. Also the dad scenes I don’t really see the point of including. Like I like the scenes, just not seeing the why.

All of his mannerisms about body image, dressing/looking good, the meekness and crying during the bullying are all little clues that if complied are not characteristics of what we define as “masculine”.
However his father and society have “norms” that one MUST align with in order to be recognized as a man. Him not naturally being those things would lead a young man to believe he’s not a man when he sees himself in the mirror. Well if he’s not a man what is he? He sees the ridicule and loneliness that being himself brings as validation of his dad being right and that if he just becomes what his dad sees as a man then the world will too.
Then the world will finally accept him, but he becomes entirely detached from humanity and sees everyone as actors like him, doing what others think they should. It’s over the show that we learn humanity is a spectrum and it’s the differences that unite us, not reasons to separate us.
So in essence he was born more fem and transitioned into masc to adjust to society’s and his fathers cruel standards.
i have no idea how people are getting that. his whole character was loosely based off of dan harmon and most of his behavior can be explained by his massive ego and just society's toxic masculinity in general.
@@posinega I didn’t create the vid/title, I’m just giving the reasoning. You can draw ur own conclusions from that but, it doesn’t invalidate trans ppl identify with the portrayal. There are men that can be like Jeff and be totally straight/identity as “masc” and there’s some that go thru that process and see themselves more “fem” and go that route however that turns out.
Like Dean says “gay doesn’t even begin to describe it”, it’s a spectrum. The point is not to say “no it’s not like that I don’t understand” and continue with that mentality. The point is to see ppl can have the same interactions/emotions and if we force everyone into societal standards of man/woman then we leave ppl and their sense of identity behind.
That’s why even if Jeff isn’t trans he’s most definitely indifferent to life because he doesn’t even know how to be himself. The show is about being yourself and seeing that everyone is struggling with it to some degree and if we have empathy and compassion for each other we can forge meaningful relationships. This Jeff at the end of the show has found himself and in doing that he’s found people who truly appreciate him for him.

Alr so im a subscriber to the jeff is secretly bi thing, because theres many points in the show that showcase this possibility. Can someone please politely explain how this is trans at all. Thank you
it's mainly up to interpretation. i'm transmasc myself and there are some things that Jeff says or does that i can either relate to gender identity wise or could be interpreted as a metaphor for being trans in general. it can be little lines like when Britta said he "decided to grow a wang" or when he referred to himself as a "self made man". obviously those lines don't guarantee he's trans but could prompt a viewer to headcanon him as trans. then there are other things that can be seen more as a trans metaphor. the way he's constantly trying to be seen as masculine, as a man. when he was young and was being bullied by young Shirley for not being boyish enough and that moment stuck with him even through to adulthood. or when his mum made him dress up as a girl and he was upset abt everyone calling him a girl but eventually he stopped correcting them because that made him feel even more awkward and scared.
that's mainly how i view all of this stuff. like i said these aren't things that say he's definitively trans, and ofc cis men can experience stuff like this, but some people have interpreted these things as him being trans and headcanon him as such. i hope this helped :)

As a gender non-conforming person: many of these are gender performances. He's outwardly and specifically choosing to be seen as masculine because it makes him feel safe. Not all cis men do this, just like not all cis women see their femininity as a performance. "Normal guy stuff" isn't performing masculinity under the fear of being seen as not a man, because that would prove that gender and masculinity are a choice and a conscious one... which isn't how cis people see it...

In all seriousness, you have to understand that there is not much in the show to substantiate believing that Jeff is Transgender, even in this compilation of the show. Someone is obviously allowed to interpret characters in their own way and imagine them in their own way but you have to understand this is for a very specific group of people that shares the same interpretation. You cannot judge people who didn’t interpret it the same way as you or didn’t attach the same meaning to it as you did, a meaning that is not there in the source material. Not everybody in this world will get behind every thought that pops up in your head, and instead of realising the problem with that thought process you throw a tantrum and call them intolerant and backward.
