Rab is an ancient town situatied on an island which shares its name - the island of Rab, located in the northern Adriatic sea just off the Croatian coast. It is one of the most beautiful Croatian coastal towns with a very well preserved historic center, but its defining unique feature is Komrčar Park - a truly wonderful Mediterranean forest park overlooking the long stony beach and the clear turquoise Adriatic sea. The park is located just next to the historic center and offers a wonderful respite from relentless Mediterranean summer sun. It is the home to many different plant and animal species and walking through it is a treat to all senses - from amazing vistas to therapeutic smells of Mediterranean vegetation as well as a steady sound of crickets enjoying the summer.
The beautiful Komrčar Park as it is today is the result of efforts made by the late Rab forestry superintendent Pravdoje Belia who, in 1890, started afforestation of an area which was used as cattle pasture up to then. His vision was met with some resistance in the beginning but thankfully he persisted in his work and the forest park was complete in 1905. You can see the monument in his remembrance which was erected just after his death in 1924. (26:55) Today many locals and tourists can enjoy what Pravdoje Belia left behind. The town of Rab would be incomplete without it.
