- The exodus in Rafah had already begun when, late on Monday, Hamas issued a statement saying it would accept the ceasefire deal. It is a dramatic development after seven months of bloody conflict in Gaza.

But the deal is not done, with an Israeli official quoted in the past few minutes saying that Hamas had agreed to a softened version of the proposed deal, that was not acceptable to Israel.
Is this all last minute brinkmanship or could the possibility of peace slip away again?

Bibi is using the hostages as an excuse to fulfill his own military aims. He could have traded the hostages with a bunch of Palestinian prisoners, but he hasn’t. Even a lot of the hostage’s families in Israel are saying this. There have been protests in Israel to release the hostages by whatever means possible. Even the Israelis are fed up with Bibi.

After Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, 2023, killing in cold-blood 1,200 innocent people, and kidnapping some 250 others, why shouldn't the perpetrators of this great crime be held accountable? What’s confusing about this whole situation is that it’s possible to both condemn the Hamas attacks _and_ think Israel has been more than heavy-handed in its response to October 7th. It’s possible to support Palestinian freedom from Israeli state oppression without being antisemitic just as it’s possible to support Israel against Islamist aggression without being anti-Muslim. These 2 things are not necessarily mutually exclusive. Too many folk are either one thing or t’other in this conflict when it’s possible to be both/and.

The discussion in this war is absurd.
First. Israel acted selflessly to live in peace with the Palestinians in Gaza. It was more than a decade ago when Israel itself ordered Israeli citizens who had lived there for decades to literally leave their homes. The first thing the Palestinians did in return was to elect a government that enshrined the goal of destroying Israel in the constitution. The elected government followed through with its promise. Since its founding, thousands of rockets have flown into Israeli settlement areas. Dozens of civilians died in terrorist attacks. Millions of aid funds - intended for civilian institutions - were misused to sponsor this terrorism. October 7th was just what Humus had been doing for years.
Secondly. Israel behaved more humanely in this conflict than any other conceivable party in any imaginable conflict. It allowed Palestinians to work in Israel, receive medical care or even migrate to Israel. During war, they warn civilians where their military is operating. They admit collateral damage and apologize for it.
The situation is clear. In no other conflict the responsibility for the suffering has been so one sided and clear - in no other conflict have the perpetrators been held accountable so weakly. People with voice and power who claim to reject war and the nature of war have a duty to unequivocally name the culprit of this war and do everything in their power to eliminate them. Everything else is responsibility for the resulting suffering and is as history has proved continuing this madness.

It’s a good ploy, but it’s disappointing so many people fall for it.

Who? It seems like both “sides” want all the land. That’s the problem, and neither of them are willing to negotiate at this time, under these two regimes/leaders. The closest we had to a two state solution was the 90’s, and those leaders are long gone. The truth of the matter is that neither side is going to actually get all of the land, and they have to accept that and take a loss in the process. If they want end this decades long back and forth retaliation, they have to agree to a real two state solution in which Israel and Palestine are both independent of each other, which means no more Hamas rockets being sent to Israel and no more Israeli settlements in the Palestinian Territories. Unfortunately, they aren’t at a point where they’re willing to stop doing that stuff.

You are so, so ill informed. Hamas offered a comprehensive deal since last year which Netanyahu promptly rejected as a nonstarter. Netanyhu only objective is to rid Gaza of ALL Palestinians. In the past, what's scuttled the deals has been that not all the hostages were to be released (this one will return 30 of I believe 120), that Israel have the right to veto certain prisoners, specifically those that have committed horrendous crimes, and that Hamas remain in power.
Anyone who is pro-palestine should really want Hamas out. During every peace negotiation in the last twenty years one of the major stumbling blocks has been that the PA and Hamas never agree. And Israel will not negotiate with them separately.
