- Learning to make your own game can be difficult and time-consuming! You want to create an RPG, but every game making tool you have found was either too complex or too limited? RPG Maker MZ empowers you with simple tools to create your RPG right out of the box, yet is customizable enough to make the exact RPG you want!
RPG Maker is well-known for being used to produce incredible games such as To The Moon, Yume Nikki, Lisa: The Painful, Omori and more.
In this series of videos, I aim to explain how to use RPG Maker MZ in bitesize sessions of 100 seconds or less, giving you only the most important information that you'll need, as well as useful tips and tricks along the way.
I didn't realize the engine only cared about the 4:3 ratio, rather than the actual pixel count. Does the same principle apply to the side view battlers? I've always hated the way the default SV characters looks, but if I don't need to match the pixel size, that expands my options greatly.
Yep, most assets rely on ratios rather than specific pixel counts, so SV battlers should be the same!
Really liked this tutorial. Short and clear to the point. I especially liked the part about the gradient editing as I want some more variation in colours for the characters in my game. Glad you are producing these short tutorials, I've got something from each one.
this 100 seconds format is perfect!!!
I’ve been trying to figure out how to import characters in a bigger size and this simple tutorial has helped more then any others I found, thank you!
thank u for this ^_^
Why do my sprites appear so small in game
I'm just starting out with RPG Maker and all your tutorials have been such a big help~ ♪ Thank you so much! ❤
extremely informative and straight to the point. thank you very much for the great tutorial
Are we able to make character art bigger than 48 pixels across each? I was hoping to make character art that was at least 150 across. I got this program for Christmas and I'm trying to learn all I can.
Yes, you can make sprites at any size! The only thing to bear in mind is that the "collision box" will be as big as you set it in the System 2 Tab (48x48 by default), so some larger characters may clip or look weird when interacting with your maps.
Just wondering what type of file is needed in order to put it in the game, because I am uploading my drawings from my iPad (From ibisPaintX) to the computer, but they won't let me put them in the game.
MZ uses PNG files for images so you'll either have to somehow export it as a PNG from the original software, or open your Ibis file in another program on the computer and export it to PNG. You could potentially try Photopea, it's a browser-based free alternative to Photoshop that might be able to open Ibis files.
Thank you so much i was trying to figure this out for days but no other videos i looked at could help me
Amazing tutorial thank you!
omg thank u, big fan
What do you use to make the pixel art itself? Is there a software?
I personally use Gimp for my own personal comfort, but for pixel artists I'd recommend Aseprite.
If I may ask, I've seen in other videos that character sprites can do more than 3 frames horizontally allowing for smoother walking animation. Is that some sort of plug in? Does RPG Maker inherently support more than 3 frames walk cycle?
It's not inherently supported but there are plugins that will let you use as many frames as you want. :D I think there are a few free ones on the RPGMakerWeb forums.
But can the sprites themselves be any resolution (like rpg maker 2000 sized sprites) and still be importable into rpg maker MZ?
Yep, they can! As long as they're placed on the sheet correctly, RPG Maker will automatically divide the height by 4 and width by three, no matter what size the sheet is. :D
@@Cazwolf wouldn't the sprite end up to big? Sorry I'm confused on this
Great video, thanks!
Thank you! :D
Is it possible to add 5 frames of walking animation so a 5x4 sheet? Or are the sheets only read 3x4?
By default they only read 3x4, but there are some really easy to use plugins that'll let you use however many frames you want. Off the top of my head, Galv's MZ Character Frames works really well!
@@Cazwolf Ok thank you! I'll look into that.
Thank you for the video, see you on the next one
Is there a way to remove the shadows the game puts over the characters? Like if I am making my own it looks super weird with their shadows on it as well.
Are you using any plugins? By default RPG Maker won't add any shadows, but there are certain plugins that will add them.
I can’t find anywhere that has rules about using licensed characters. If I want to use a character from Nintendo or something, what do I need to know?
How do we just use one image for battle for our player characters like the enimes are
Sorry for my English. I'm desperate, I need help. I used a template to draw over my character. The game works when I use the base template. But when he used my edit character the game crashes (Is it because of the resolution? or the colors palette? I would like you to help me. Please.
Does it give you an error message when the game crashes?
@@Cazwolf Hello. Thank you very much for your reply Several things happen to me:
1- When I open it, it immediately closes. OR
2- 7 seconds after moving the character the screen goes black.
3- (I thought it could be that the size of the template was a pixel smaller than my drawing, so I modified the head of the template in case the error was the size. Then I get a resolution error, but I think this error would be different I'm so sorry I can't explain it well.
I have always put the $ symbol
@@d-thessy465 Hmm that's really weird, it shouldn't be doing that even if the character sprite isn't correct. Have you tried putting the character into a fresh project? It might be something else causing your issues.
@@Cazwolf I have seen that my character works on Windows version. So the problem is the Apple version. I can't believe it, this shouldn't happen.
Thank you for reply me!
i like cars they're cute
How do import a custom face set? Just a face.
You'll need to put the graphic into your project's img>faces folder. It will need to be formatted in a specific way too following the file sizes of the default assets in that folder. They need to be 576x288 and each face takes up a section on a 2x4 grid.
@@Cazwolf thanks so much
Is MZ better than MV? And does the plugin for 3D exist for that one?
There's a 3D plugin for both MV and MZ, check out Cutievirus on itch.io for those plugins. Personally I like MZ better but MV is still a good game engine if you're on a budget.
thank you .. i have one issue regarding the grid .. i simply cant find it on my photoshop like in the video...
I'm using Gimp in the video, but I believe the option should be in Photoshop under View > Show > Grid
So how do you make the custom avatar sprite? Im a newbie and would like to learn a lot about this gane
I'll try to do an in-depth video on this in future, but click 'Tools' in the top left and go to 'Character Generator.' You can customise your characters, and then click 'Walking Character...' in the bottom left to save the image. Make sure to save it into your project's folder under img>characters, and then it should appear in your project. :D
thanks!
I'm curious, which tileset is this?
This is my Pixel Fantasy RTP replacement which you can find here :D
itch.io/c/2497604/pixel-fantasy-tiles
can i get your animation character?
You can download the sprite I used in this video from here! :D

MZ, MV, or VX?
MZ
Good stuff Caz!
Thanks Balmut!
Does this work in MV?
This should work the same for MV, yes!
@@Cazwolf thanks, it worked
