The most important thing about those gauntlets though: They're Hella stylish.

+Skallagrim Perhaps those types of gauntlets aren't meant to take a full strike. Maybe they are meant to be a piece of protection in case a blade slides off yours or your cross guard in the unlikely situation, so they protect more from glancing blows than full strikes.
And if all else fails they would work as pretty good cestus' (steel knuckles).

On the page they claim that they're supposed to be "combat ready." And no, if anyone ever charges 2k$ for gauntlets then they'd better be from the actual middle ages or else they're a scam.

    • @GrenadeRat

Yes, a full suit. I'm simply saying that standalone gauntlets would and/or should not be 2k$

Imagine, gauntlets would require master armor smiths to custom make these for knights during medieval times. That's some pretty serious craftsmanship and skill. It's really no surprise that Knights were so elite. It took a huge amount of resources for that time, to craft their armor.

Gauntlets are one of those components that really should be custom fit to the wearer. You can get away with modern gloves that are a little off sized, but when those gloves are made from steel and require you retain functional dexterity, they should be custom fit. Real gothic gauntlets also utilize very complex articulation in the wrist to allow not only flexion and extension, but also radial and ulnar deviation. I've had the opportunity to try on an original from the Wade Allen collection and I was blown away with their movement. DSA also missed the historical lines of a real gothic gauntlet pretty badly with this piece.

  • @kryl0b
    @kryl0b 8 лет назад +6

I always thought of it as a gauntlet with separate fingers being a sign of status. I mean, in movies, whenever the big bad general, in black armor on the black horse rocks up, you never see them wearing mitten style gauntlets, which are, as you point out, better to protect you.
Wearing a gauntlet with fingers may be more of a way to say "look at me, I'm rich and powerful enough to afford THIS degree of detail on my armor!". and in movies with big evil black armoured generals, it says "I don't just WEAR armor. my body is MADE from armor."
It makes them seem less human, and as a result, more terrifying.
Of course, that's just speculation and observations on my part, and I could just as easily be wrong.

There are some 15th century German gothic mittens that look pretty damn costly. The mittens he showed were pretty simple despite all the lames. Some mittens from back then had the look of fingered gauntlets. Like you wouldn’t guess they were mittens until you saw them move or wore them. I think it was just a matter of preference.

Thanks for reviewing these gauntlets and giving such an in-depth explanation for why you don't necessarily like them. I do some writing for fantasy, and while there's a lot of info about swords and weapons- including yours!- I don't find as much for gauntlets or armor. Hope that you'll do more like this, including about the 'mitten' style.

Someone once mentioned the fluting was for decoration, however it is almost certainly for stiffness, allowing higher resistance to deformation with thinner metal, just fold paper alternatively a few times and you can see the stiffness added.

My training partner has had these gloves for around a year. We spar steel longsword often enough (with a long break recently). I have given him some good strikes to the hands and these hold up for him fine. His hands are much larger than yours. He wears liner gloves as you recommend and has never complained. Some of the rivets are coming loose and his gauntlets are quite rusty, however he's still pretty happy. They are just a bit heavy and there are better options coming onto the market that are less cumbersome and more flexible.

"One size fits all equally poorly."
Those gauntlets look pretty nice, though. I picked up some Deepeeka gothic gauntlets a while back and while they're nice to look at, the metal is a little flimsy and untreated (I was able to make a dent in them with the point of a pocket knife) so they're not exactly functional. Finger articulation is a bit rougher too. I may pick these up at some point. Finger gauntlets aren't really as protective as those big mitten clamshell gauntlets but I would like the freedom of movement more.

I have gauntlet's pretty much like the ones you reviewed (just not the gothic style and bought from a czech smith). I like them, they look cool and they protect well as long as your oponent doesn't hit a rivet. And we're doing full contact sparring (had a few bruises on my fingers after 3 trainign sessions so I was going to flatten the inside of the rivets and now I hope it'll get better).
    So good review! =)

I bought a great pair of steel gauntlets a few months ago. They are very similar to your pair, but instead of dozens of small plates on the fingers, mine has 3 half-cylinder plates on each finger. I found that this allows my fingers to move at any angle I could without the gauntlets on. The wrists also can articulate about 85 degrees up and 35-40 degrees down. I couldn't tell you who made them, since I got them from my local Renaissance Festival in an Armor shop. Very cool video, interesting to see other Gauntlet designs in use! I'd LOVE to see more armor reviews from you, would you even buy a full suit at some point?

I can personally attest to the shortcomings of finger gloves. It's difficult to make a high mobility glove and still have really solid protection and durability. As bad as they can be for mobility, clamshells will always be more protective, and often more durable.

I'm sorry Skall, I know you said you like their look, but to my eye they're hideous, especially compared to real gothic gauntlets with their sleek, slender and sublime shape (I like alliterations ;-) ). Their mobility, especially in the thumb and wrist area, seems also quite restricted, and of course they're way oversized for you.
I said it before and I'll say it again: with armour, there's only one option: go custom. Or make it yourself, like I do, but that's not an option for everyone, of course.

+Chaos Omega better then nothing however, and on an actual battlefield (as if that would ever happen lol) I'd probably prefer them because they are more flexible. That would allow to better grappling as fights between plated fighters usually ended in them grappling and sliding a dagger through the face plate.

In 2012 i got exactly the same pair from a German shop for 200-250€. I used them in
sparring with Feders and in Larpcombat. From the point of agility, you can do
everything with them. The main problem with this gauntlets is the leather
glove. They glued them to the steal
and this glue don't hold very long. Another disadvantage
are the rivets in the fingers. Direct hits on the fingers pull the rivets out
of the leather strip that holds it. Last year i removed the original leather
glove and replace it with light padded hema-gloves. Now they protect me really
    well.

One thing i can say after 2 years of reenactment with steel weapons is that mail gauntlets hurt a lot less than plate if you get hit in the hand, but padding will always help in the long run

i got those, i even got skeptical and did a file test they were very soft. so i took them apart. left brass bits behind and tempered the steel pieces. 1500*f for 30 mins. then quenched. waited.. then cook for 550* for 30 mins in oven. then pulled out let it cool down on its own. polished it up. riveted brass bits back on. it passed 53+ mohs per array of file test kit. im happy.

I've got a similar pair of gauntlets and can back up the absolute need of either having a separate pair of gloves underneath, or getting the gauntlets bound to entirely new/better gloves.
Can't speak towards the more segmented fingers, but my pair has only two segments and a knuckle piece that seemed to lessen the blow slightly.

Gothic armor sure does have a unique look with the fluting. Those look awesome and would turn a lot of heads as a historical custom. Shame they do not work great for protection though.
Why are the knuckle guards slightly different? One is riveted in the center while the other is attached from below.

The way to go would seem to be using asymmetrical gauntlets, one crab pincer mitten to completely protect your sword hand and one fully articulated gauntlet for fine manipulation or holding a shield.

  • @Warhamer116
    @Warhamer116 8 лет назад

I somehow imagine that keeping up with the "one size fits all" theme they made the original leather glove purposefully thin so the user could compensate for their hand size by using thicker or thinner underglove or no underglove at all so that the glove fits the user better- kinda reminds me of how the finnish army does their combat "gantlets" (essentially very very sturdy glove meant to be used with one or two softer and thinner under-gloves, making holding guns warmer in winter and increasing comfort when crawling in hazardous places like floors with broken glass)

  • @jimriddle988

Im not sure about historical accuracy but the fingered gauntlets I HAVE used (besides clams) in the SCA Heavy division had finger plates extending below the total depth of the finger. This allowed the metal to connect with the sword grip and disperse its energy into the grip/gauntlet instead of directly into the fingers like both sets of gauntlets would do. If your gauntlet was attached right it still allowed a direct grip by the hand on what ever surface you touched as well. Its just a little more material on the fingers but saved me from many hand shots that dented the armor and no doubt would have broke my fingers.

Hey guys you do a destructive test, test only the right glove. If you keep the left you can try a mix and match with the mit in on your right and that one on your left. Safety and dexterity combo. Would be good for full contract when you are healed, as well as be an "in the field" test too along with the destructive one.

When you pointed the fingers close to the camera, I noticed that there is another rivet on the back of the finger segments beneath the higher segments, I would guess that's what's holding them to the glove. Overall, beautifully crafted. stiffen the padding a bit and I bet they'd do well, though I think in this case the design trades protection for flexibility. However, all things considered in the era these would have been designed in, broken fingers would still be preferable to severed fingers.

I have a full late 14th century German style suit of armor and the issue with padding in the gauntlets are not a problem and I can take a heavy blow to the hands. If you want truly functional armor you go to Outfit4events and if you want good quality chain mail I recommend battlemerchant.
