Temples. Sealings. Garments. Aging leaders. A conversation about General Conference.

  • The recently completed 194th Annual General Conference of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints may merit no more than a mere mention in the history books of Mormonism. There were no theological breakthroughs, no major policy changes, no sweeping shake-ups among the top echelons.
    But the sessions did feature significant speeches, memorable moments and notable nuances. A British church leader delivered his debut conference sermon as an apostle. A longtime apostle returned to the conference pulpit after an extended absence. A Black general authority rose in the ranks to a historic level. Speakers publicly addressed the private wearing of so-called temple garments by the faithful. And the church’s aging senior leadership, led by a prophet-president inching ever closer to the century mark, made conspicuous accommodations to conference procedures.
    On this week’s show, Emily Jensen, web editor for Dialogue: A Journal of Mormon Thought, and Patrick Mason, head of Mormon history and culture at Utah State University, look back at the conference and what it may mean to the church and its 17.2 million members moving forward.

    I went back reread the Elder Carpenter talk, and I didn't see anything all that problematic. I did see the line the woman in this video mentioned, "However, if a cancellation of sealing is desired, agency is respected. Certain procedures can be followed. ". But I personally think that she was reading into this more than it is saying.
    I have seen couples who have separated for a time, but then eventually got back together and were even happier than before. I would say that is a situation to not be casual about canceling a sealing. Sure if there is abuse happening, the party that is being abused should definitely leave asap. But if there is not abuse happening, conflict remediation can help the marriage come back even stronger and happier than before.
    So of course all of the words of scripture and modern prophets and apostles should be applied by each individual through personal revelation, but it is impossible for leaders to make EVERYTHING they say applicable to every single case and individual.

      West Jordan is the third largest city in salt lake county and is still growing...and they are finally getting their own temple. It is suspected that it will be put on the west side which will be further from other temples in the area. We'll see.

    Are the SLTB and Utah State intentionally using the incorrect name to refer to the Church now?

    Listening to this podcast, and in regards to the age of the First Presidency, and the age of the President of the United States you have to take into consideration that leadership of the Church is focused on the Spiritual issues at stake and where people end up after this life. With the leadership of the United States, the only thing that the leadership is concerned about is the worldly status of things and there is a difference. We are led by God our Heavenly Father and his Son, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, who atoned for everyone who believes in His redeeming sacrifice and will help us who repent returning to live in the presence of Our Heavenly Father. This podcast makes it look like they are against the church.

    We believe we have a living prophet, a man who sees and speaks to God as prophets of old, and Emily’s concern is this man is quoted to many times in General Conference? I truly don’t understand her way of thinking through this entire episode.

    If the church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is the true church, then Jesus Himself chooses His Apostles and our opinion doesn’t really matter.

    As far as the Apostles “wearing out our lives” comment, I think the Apostles understand this scripture:
    “24Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. 25For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it. 26For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul? 27For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works.”

    How do you retreat and get refuge in the temple when your entire family can't be there (think children, non active and non members) If his comment meant a refuge for a moment during the week, that is a very expensive, some estimates $69 million per, to make a place for only a minuscule number of members to "retreat" to.

    • @boysrus61
      @boysrus61 Месяц назад

      Do you mean faith or cognitive dissonance? You want people to have more cognitive dissonance so they can believe everything they are told. If everything is true, then there won't be any evidence to the contrary correct?

    When your whole life is dedicated to serving the church and not your family it just seems to me that the priority isn’t family and spending time with those we love the most But to those who we generally don’t really know to that degree anyway! And then we wonder why people see us as a works church and not a grace church! You can see the simplicity of The gospel in the New Testament and this isn’t what we see in the church today!!
