This is the first, and most overlooked, animated series from the award-winning creative team of Chris Prynoski and George Krstic.
This critically acclaimed, reality-based, animated series follows the lives of Alex and Chaka, a brother and sister pair of polar opposites, as well as their East Village friends. A funny, trippy and often surreal take on modern life in the city, Downtown portrays the intersecting lives of a group of diverse characters who live, work, and play in the greatest town in the world - NYC.

I love how Serena is hypocrite, she's "weird" and a "outcast" but also points out people who she finds weird and nerd. I think that fact gives her a lot of realism as a character. I think the best thing this series has is the multiple cons that every character has, but it doesn't makes them bad, just real, like any other person.

Yeah I appreciate that too because they could've just made Serena not have any perceived flaws and that would've cheapened her character. They gave her problems just like all the other characters and it's great. Though I can't say I don't blame her mild discomfort when the guys perv on her, After all, there have been men who creep on goth and alternative women even back in the 90s.
Yeah agreed, every single character is flawed in their own way, even the goth goddess Serena. That makes every character convincing and realistic.

I love when theyre sitting on the bed alone and he starts nervously ripping apart the beer label, and when she starts getting vulnerable talking about herself she starts to play with the ripped up pieces. Its a really nice touch.

The most realistic moment in all animation
This show has so many little touches. I think my favorite ones are whenever actors dip in and out of accents. I don't think I ever see that in animation.
I adore how everyone in this show has flaws, no one is the “good guy” but no one is necessarily a “bad guy” either. It’s very realistic, even the voices sound authentic. I love this show.

I was a senior in high school when this show came out and it’s very strange being of two minds on it now. Part of me is nostalgic for that era of figuring things out and sometimes saying or doing stupid things. The other part of me is glad I was able to grow from that and be who I am now relatively unscathed.

this show is surprisingly relevant to today's culture despite how much it accurately conveys the time it was made. Another thing I've noticed is how it clearly shows that women specifically alt girls are just as "weird" as geek guys but often have difficulties connecting with each other because they see each other as stereotypes first and people second.

@@ITI-xi5zx I don't think it does that to a "T". At least with Jen, Chaka, Mecca, and Serena, they have defined personalities. Serena doesn't sexualize herself, it's the guys who are doing to her and it's not framed to be a good thing, at least from what I interpret. Chaka and Mecca's friendship shines through as they get along well even though they may argue at times. And Jen is well, Jen, surly and cynical but cares about the gang. All the main female leads in this show feel humanized as far as caricatures go.

If we're gonna talk about the women then just say how the show makes Fruity this horny dog, Alex is an incompetent mess towards women and the other geeks are just stereotypes. But these are called flaws, we see them first mostly but we see more of there character. Also if you only see the sexualization of the women in this show, you're the one who is sexualizing them.
The fact that it was the undertaker doing the voice over makes this episode even better

Serena has a “not like most people” mentality which is really awful considering she overlooks good people, people she actively searches for, and yet overlooks them because of how they look.

My favorite episode, satirizes the weirdness of comic cons in the most non-satirical way possible.
That's why I never go to those. Even the one that comes to my town I avoid like the plague. I don't care how popular geek culture is now, I'll never forget the days when being a star trek fan was pretty much a death wish.

I actually love Serena in this episode. One of my fav episodes in the series so far because you really get to see a different side of Serena, especially where she talks to Alex 1:1. She really resonates with who I am as a person. She’s edgy and Lowkey but she also has a sweet bubbly side and that honestly couldn’t describe me any better. I love her character bc she’s so similar to me ❤️

Geek culture was seen so differently in the 90's, people who went to cons were seen as weirdos and virgins that spend all their time obsessing over comic books, toys and video games. Nowadays it's cool to like these things, cons are full of girls who look like glamour models wearing cosplay and their boyfriends are attractive hipster types that probably have a popular gaming channel.
They only got more weird and deviant.

That's why undertaker is my favorite wrestler. When you take the time to think about how much things changed since back then you feel amazed. Back then D&D, comics, and comic cons were considered for kids and outcasts. Now comics are worth a fortune, millions. D&D is one of the most popular board games that's played by all ages, that also has It's own movie and cartoon. And comic cons are some of the biggest events in pop culture.

When my great grandpa got dementia, towards the end he just started saying things he thought we needed to know in life....like when I was 10 and smiled at me and said "Boy, let me tell you something...at the end of the day, if you can't find nobody to fuck....FUCK YA SELF! Because can't NOBODY fuck me like I fuck me." ....I'll never ever forget that moment. I also will never forget the horror on my grandmother (his daughter's) face when she found his VHS collection when they were cleaning things out when he passed away. I wanted to keep it so bad but at that point I was 12 and they definitely would've said no. lol RIP

It's funny how incredibly hostile this show is towards nerds ("I hate these cons. It's just a bunch of 30-year old virgins who only use their opposable thumbs for video games, and pullin' it")- nowadays, shows like this tend to celebrate nerdy things a little bit more. That said... they totally nail it in many regards, and you can TELL that the writers themselves are nerds, or else so much of it wouldn't ring as true: they gotta be, or else they wouldn't get so much of the "last thing to complete my collection" stuff so well, know what Micronauts was, and more.
So it's a bit of self-hate (especially with Alex going on about his "hoarding" complex with action figures- something I can relate to), but you know they speak from experience. Also, this has gotta be quite possibly the VERY FIRST mainstream (ish) mention of the Furry Fandom, in a random one-off gag. Keep in mind this show came out in 1999- this was before the Vanity Fair article (where a writer researched the fandom, and found a Fursuiter to talk to- said Fursuiter promptly got into his costume, pointed to the crotch-hole of it, and wanted to "yiff" him), and way before CSI's episode about them. They were REALLY unknown at this point.
Serena is SO "That Girl" that nerds loved in this time period- that slinky-yet-approachable Goth thing was IN. And as nasty as the show is towards nerds here... I've met people like that gaming group. And Alex is frighteningly like I was at his age.
Goat is hilarious. I can't believe a character who'd later show up in Megas XLR is seen here, excitedly going on about "Underage Midget Porn!" And then The Undertaker beats up a bunch of Sailor Moon Cosplayers.
Goth chicks man. Four years ago I was in EXACTLY Alex's situation.

Because Alex is the stereotypical "nice guy" and Serena is a combination of a shallow, manic pixie dream girl and a late-90's version of an e-girl who tries way too hard to be edgy. She's a sociopath who's just using him til she moves on to some other sad sap to play emotional head games with. That's just my analysis.
@@AlyssaQ420 she's not shallow. Near the end of the series she actually tries to date Alex but he is put off by her change in appearance because he only liked what was on the outside. If anything it was Alex who ended up being the shallow one at the end.
@@Devilsblood Yeah, at the end he's the superficial one for losing his attraction for her when she decides to temporarily ditch her goth look, but she's still rather hypocritical and petty for judging him based on his appearance in the first place. First she gripes about how people always judge her based on her goth attire, then proceeds to criticize Alex for dressing like a nerd and hopes he just dresses that way for his job.

It's crazy to see how far Geek Culture has come since the 90's. You still have a segment of the population that still stereotypes people who attend these events as losers and virgins. When in reality you have folks who come from all walks of life who just go to embrace their collective interest.
Plus, there are plenty of nerdy girls who go to these things often with their nerdy boyfriends and thus, are anything BUT virgins
