I actually love Serena in this episode. One of my fav episodes in the series so far because you really get to see a different side of Serena, especially where she talks to Alex 1:1. D&D is one of the most popular board games that's played by all ages, that also has It's own movie and cartoon. And comic cons are some of the biggest events in pop culture.
When my great grandpa got dementia, towards the end he just started saying things he thought we needed to know in life....like when I was 10 and smiled at me and said "Boy, let me tell you something...at the end of the day, if you can't find nobody to fuck....FUCK YA SELF! It's funny how incredibly hostile this show is towards nerds ("I hate these cons. It's just a bunch of 30-year old virgins who only use their opposable thumbs for video games, and pullin' it")- nowadays, shows like this tend to celebrate nerdy things a little bit more. That said... they totally nail it in many regards, and you can TELL that the writers themselves are nerds, or else so much of it wouldn't ring as true: they gotta be, or else they wouldn't get so much of the "last thing to complete my collection" stuff so well, know what Micronauts was, and more. So it's a bit of self-hate (especially with Alex going on about his "hoarding" complex with action figures- something I can relate to), but you know they speak from experience. Also, this has gotta be quite possibly the VERY FIRST mainstream (ish) mention of the Furry Fandom, in a random one-off gag. Keep in mind this show came out in 1999- this was before the Vanity Fair article (where a writer researched the fandom, and found a Fursuiter to talk to- said Fursuiter promptly got into his costume, pointed to the crotch-hole of it, and wanted to "yiff" him), and way before CSI's episode about them. They were REALLY unknown at this point. Serena is SO "That Girl" that nerds loved in this time period- that slinky-yet-approachable Goth thing was IN. And as nasty as the show is towards nerds here... I've met people like that gaming group. And Alex is frighteningly like I was at his age. Goat is hilarious. @@AlyssaQ420 she's not shallow. Near the end of the series she actually tries to date Alex but he is put off by her change in appearance because he only liked what was on the outside. If anything it was Alex who ended up being the shallow one at the end.
@@Devilsblood Yeah, at the end he's the superficial one for losing his attraction for her when she decides to temporarily ditch her goth look, but she's still rather hypocritical and petty for judging him based on his appearance in the first place. First she gripes about how people always judge her based on her goth attire, then proceeds to criticize Alex for dressing like a nerd and hopes he just dresses that way for his job.

its so surreal seeing this in 2024 given how much has changed and stayed the same
interesting that the aesthetic of this show is popular again now but with the added bonus that nerd culture is popular now too and not something just made fun of.
It's crazy to see how far Geek Culture has come since the 90's. You still have a segment of the population that still stereotypes people who attend these events as losers and virgins. When in reality you have folks who come from all walks of life who just go to embrace their collective interest.
Plus, there are plenty of nerdy girls who go to these things often with their nerdy boyfriends and thus, are anything BUT virgins
