For hardcore B A U H A U S and LOVE AND ROCKETS fans out there: Buy the book! If you've loved the band's works for decades, this book will blow your fucking mind! It took me three months to read this book, as I would imagine the events happening, as told in the memoir. I'd pick it up, then couldn't put it down. It has so-very-many answers to cryptic questions that fans have wondered for years (well, decades). Buy it and but it now! No regrets! 😎
Edward, TY for commenting. Its so good, and so well written. So much detail. So many stories. There were even a few things in there that I forgot to ask and now Im kicking myself. Like, I wanted to ask about Derek Tompkins cutting out a bum bass note with his razor blade. I wanted to ask David where that happens so I can listen for it. Im also curious, was that a cut of the entire mix? incredible skill to do that so seamlessly. Raise a pint to Derek Tompkins, producer of Bela Lugosis Dead. also, I heard that Peter had a cold at that first session. THat was one of thge main things I wanted to ask about and I plum forgot.
Loved this interview I've been a huge fan of bauhaus and Love & Rockets since i was in high school. Like a lot of people i was first exposed to bauhaus with bela lugosi which caught my attention but it wasn't until I flipped the cassette over and heard boys I was instantly hooked. It sounded so different from anything I heard up until then. Then I heard all we ever wanted from the sky's gone out album that solidified my fandom. Sky's gone out and mask are my 2 favorite albums from bauhaus in the flat fields is a very close 3rd.
Same/ those bela b sides were dope. It was the singles collection that really hooked me. I finally found one for sale and it’s on the way. So exited! The alternate “spirit” single mix! And it has Bela… which might be a live version?
Found the gatefold Collection when I was 14, At Vinyl Solution, same day I met Jack G. From TSOL,, 1989.. Called me DeathRocker kid anytime I ran into him,, I sold it,, I know, I know... But only after I found the Gatefold Collection with the Photos of the band.. like mini posters... Jack ragging on my decision to sell the 1st one I found... Hahaha... When I was then 25.. Cheers from Orange County California
I saw L&R in late 80’s in Jacksonville FL at the newly restored Florida Theater on their motorcycle tour. It was an amazing show. Then, about 6 years later, the frenzy had cooled and I saw them at a small club in Orange Park, outside Jax. My girlfriend at the time and I hung out behind the venue in hopes of meeting them. After a few minutes, David J and Kevin H came out. They said hello, but basically blew us off. No big deal, because I really wanted to meet Daniel Ash. After about 10 minutes, the door guard came out and asked what we were doing. I mustered up a fake bravado response, something like “we’re waiting for Daniel Ash, and I know he’s still in there” lol. He just went back inside. About 30 seconds later, out comes Daniel. Absolutely a gentleman in every sense of the word. Humble, even almost contrite. I told him I had seen them in that earlier tour, and his response was almost one of shock. He was so appreciative. He stayed a few minutes, talked with us, and took some pics. I’m embarrassed to admit that he threw me off so badly by his kindness that I became instantly star struck and couldn’t think of all the questions about Bauhaus and Peter Murphy and Love and Rockets and his influences, etc etc etc. I could have gone on for days. But I didn’t, I just kinda froze lol. 😂 I’d love to have a do-over, because I still have mad respect for all 4 of those guys and the influence they’ve had on modern music. But Daniel? That dude is above. By far the coolest memories of any concert I ever attended.
I saw L&R on that same tour of their self titled album in 1989 the pixies opened for them and was my first exposure to the pixies. I remember L&R started the show with bound for hell and ended it with american dream with ying and yang somewhere in the middle. It was awesome!
Brilliant stuff. In early 90's one of my old bands, a goth one in this case (duh), used to play a cover of Bela and I, as the "singer", totally enjoyed it! Not that difficult a song but very VERY atmospheric
David J you are still brilliant. got to hang out with you a few times when you were up here in Portland as a DJ. You were very cool and humble. You guys should seriously all be seriously in The Rock -N-Roll Hall Of Fame. Your influence and timeless longevity.
When you can listen to a Band that you loved since you were a Teenager.. Knowing full well you made great decisions.. I will always be that DeathRocker kid...
Have the book and was always a fan, but one day at my job years back David J came through my line (was working at a grocery store). I asked if he was David J and said I was a fan. He promptly read my name tag and said "and your Jason" He had such a shit superior attitude. So disappointing after years of appreciation of his art. Few years on learned he was a somewhat local in that area I lived and met colleagues of his musically. Ducky Waddles... Still love Bauhaus, Love and Rockets, Tones on Tail, but honestly I think I met exactly who he is. Oh well.
Thats unfortunate! Like all of us, hes a guy. He might not be into being famous all the time. Ive had bummer interactions with heroes before, I feel the pain man.
My first record, purchased around 1972 when I was about 12 was Velvet Underground. I guess I've always been weird and dark. 🖤🥀🦇⚰ Was turned on to Bauhaus years later through a copy of MASK at a thrift store in a pile of cast off Goth albums.
Having read Mr. David J’s book a few times, Peter probably suffer from bipolar and Daniel was probably aware he has suffered for a long time. I could tell because I had the same symptoms. At the end of a day, all of you are always good friends and hope both Bauhaus and Love & Rockets have the bright future ahead.
Speaking with David was a highlight of my life. For real, I’ve been a fan for so long, and to have him be so kind and down to earth was just wonderful. So yeah- he DJs sometimes so go say hello!
PART 2 is up now! DANCING WITH Mr. BOWIE on the set of The Hungerruclips.net/video/0TsPnTvGjYk/видео.html

Thank you for your channel.
I believe the cheap electro harmonix fuzz he mentioned using was the Muff Fuzz, not to be confused with the big muff
Knives, thank you!
