Just dropped a glass baking dish on my ceramic floor. If you spend a lot of time standing in the kitchen, i would definitely go for wood. Wood gives such a wonderful warmth to a space. Same of the stairs. less breakage when you drop things too!

If you ever want to drill into your floor and need to find your in-floor heating tubes, turn on the heater and let the floor START to warm up, then use an infrared thermal temperature gun or better yet, an inexpensive infrared thermal imaging camera - you can detect the higher temperature of the coils versus the surrounding concrete/flooring.

So different from American construction! As for the stairs, the island, backsplash and even the floor, Portugal has some amazing colored/painted tiles that are so beautiful and very part of Portuguese culture and history. Might be amazing to add those to the mill. I might also have stair carpet rod holders installed and put a raffia runner down those stairs for traction and safety.
Of course wood would be beautiful on the floor and stairs if it truly conducts the hydro heat well.

Hey, what do you guys planning to use for internet connection for the future? By the way, concrete and stone walls block wifi much more than drywall. So, for the inside of the mill you may want to put access points or mesh system for wireless connection. I suggest pull cat6 wires to where you will be installing those.

Gardener here. When your tomatoes split like that it means they went to long without proper water and then were given excessive water. Causing them to grow to fast after sitting and growing to slow. Which is why it split the skin. Hope that helps sometimes a weeper hose on high water content plants is better than watering by hand. You run the hose set it to a timer and have it run for a nice amount of time (hours) since it only puts out a very small amount of water at a time. Less if it is rainy. I ran a garden and farm stand business offering a large variety. So we actually had 120 plants, so I am well versed and learned what is best for plants.

In general, I believe one type of flooring throughout a house is best, at least by floor. It keeps sight lines clean, overall better aesthetically, easier to clean and maintain and doesn’t make things choppy looking with multiple different materials.
For your downstairs tile, I’d recommend porcelain over ceramic because is is more durable and easier to care for and it’s less slippery.
Not sure about cork upstairs. You can get acoustic tile that is more durable than cork. However, cork will feel better to walk on with bare feet. If you’re going to have any rugs, throw or area, that won’t matter.
What else can you source in Portugal? If you are in a tropical environment, I’d even consider bamboo.
IAE, or course some great Portuguese tiles will be amazing.
Great progress! It’s always exciting to see things start to take shape and get to the finishing stage.

I live in Coastal northeast Florida, and I’m thinking about Drew‘s parents today. Thank you for the update yesterday. During hurricane Michael and Ian we were underwater. After Michael, a local contractor restored properties using marine lumber to replace the floor and to make wainescoating around the ground floor rooms. This is the same wood they use for boats. It is resistant to salt water intrusion. When these homes were flooded again during hurricane Ian, there was no restoration necessary, just cleanup, and allowing the wood to dry.

Take lots of pictures with measuring references of that underfloor heating system. Sooner or later, it will spring a leak! A leak in the tubing can and will follow along next to a tube for an unknown distance before it surfaces up through your flooring. You will then have to break out floor until you find the actual tubing leak. Knowing the layout of the tubing at that time does help a little. It did happen to me and I was lucky. I only had to bust out about 30 sq feet of floor to find and repair the leak and then the floor and floor covering. Of course they assured me it would never leak. Hah.

It looks amazing, what a work crew. In my house in the Netherlands we also have underfloor heating, we chose 0.60x0.60 stone tiles, keeps the heat longer en its cooler in the summer. You have a large room, do not go for small tiles, it will look very busy. The tubing of the floor heating sits in the island wall? Be aware, if you put the pump in there, that pump makes noise during the time you using the underfloor heating.

I have LVT or LVP on every floor in my house. It’s waterproof, won’t crack if you drop a heavy object on it. Doesn’t get scratched from dogs running on it. Just a suggestion.

You have to improve the front door. Add a metal lintel plate .25 thick above minimum about 6 foot 8 inch from the floor level. Knock the top off the door and make a bigger opening.
I would make the door with glass as to let light in. You need it.

Coloquem pf um recuperador de calor a lenha. Aquece a casa toda, faz a água quente circular e já vi que têm aí bastante lenha e muito tempo para a recolher. A meu ver faz sentido.

Beautiful pice of property! That house will be great. Even though I live in Florida If I build again I will put heated floors. Hope your parents did ok though the storm. We were not affected. But we have tons of people that came this way.

Incredible progress!!!! Fantastic team. I love the way they preserve the roman foundations in Greece as part of everyday life that people walk past. They put like a clear floor over the historic floor so it can be walked upon and appreciated but not worn away.😊❤🎉 ❤🎉😂

You should have a look on a quartz vinyl flooring. I have such in my home, it conducts the heat, is water resistant and imitates a wood. Durability is on a level of tiles

Oh my....it's looking awesome. I was so excited to see the men cementing the blue heated floor. I am imagining the entire finish, but I want to be surprised when you finally do the unveiling. I am so excited for you.

Nice video as usual. I have used Reolink for my current house which are all solar powered. My previous home was new so I used POE cameras and the Reolink NVR. So obviously a good choice.. lol

Lovely home , I hope that you are very happy there. We put cork/vinyl planking on stairs , added custom bullnose in the same material. Works fine , comfortable, quiet, easy clean, easy care, no wear after six years. Hydronic underfloor heating ground floor covered in outdoor/ indoor no slip porcelain tiles extended onto patios outdoors. These are great for comfort and allow for minimal rugs and so easy to keep clean. There is no maintenance on the tiles too! Best of luck with the rest of the build, it will be a spectacular property.

I was planning to visit to scout out for a move from US but found many expats saying animal abuse is too rampant and some leaving due to that. 😢 I still have ptsd from years of rescue so decided to exclude from my list. They passed laws in 2014 but don’t enforce. Hope you guys don’t have to deal with. ❤

If you ever consider building a larger pool think about building a natural pool that uses a reed bed to filter the water instead of using chemicals. There is a great video a of a home using cork insulation with a natural pool. The video is titled "Cork-clad home uses Trombe Wall & circular vents as free A/C".

Nice to see your veggies garden own grown is the best 😋😀 maybe isolation under the metal roofing to keep the heat from the sun away from the camper 🌞

There's so much planning, and you can't miss a step. When I had my master bathroom renovated, the contractor purchased my new faucet, but forgot to install it. They had already sealed up the tiles, and would have had to undo a costly procedure, so I had to just deal with not having a new faucet. I was disappointed, but wished I had noticed before the tub was being tiled over.

My comments here are probably too late, but I don't recommend real hardwood floors over in-floor heat. We have it here, and the wood shrinks in the winter and expands in the summer. The fake wood floors do not expand or contract.
