Great insight into the mechanics of palm muting technique. Very relevant to me, a relative novice who always has trouble with muting B and high E strings...A very limiting and frustrating technical limitation. Thanks for this, man.
Sean Daniel Here's a handy list you may want to consult, next time you find yourself in a rut or in need of inspiration: ruclips.net/p/PLRxyIguFM1Df4sx4iueVKOnlb9oSHS7eK. Happy New Year.
Thanks so much, Sean. This video is so helpful, you break it down so perfectly. My more experienced musician friends have noticed how much I’ve improved thanks to this lesson. Cheers from Halifax, 🇨🇦
I am having a hard time palm muting the 1st and 2nd string, like when strumming or picking the palm of my hand gets lifted naturally and then leaves these two strings open!
Thanks for this video Sean. Can you give some details on the mechanics of your index finger? Specifically, is it straight or curved, and does that change from upstroke to downstroke? It would also be helpful to hear about the pick angle you're using. It's hard to tell from the video. One discussion board I found says to keep the pick at a 90 degree angle to the ground to make the transition from down to upstroke easier. But that makes it harder to hit all the strings cleanly. Thanks!
Sean, how about some videos on playing different genres of music? There must be guitar techniques that are used more often in country, bluegrass, rock, pop, punk, etc.. Maybe do a series on it
how long should it take to do this? I have been trying to practice but I can't get the hang of it. I am considering getting private lessons to work on this.
Revisiting this, because the chimey high e string is just forever killing me. I noticed something this time: You explain the muting as judo-choppig the bridge and show the edge of your hand parallel to the bridge, which make sense intellectually. So I kept trying that. Took me a few *cough* years *cough* to notice that you then angle your hand pretty strongly. The top part of your hand is by the bridge, but the tips of your fingers far enough forward to be over the soundhole. I also wonder if I have my hand too high overall. I still haven't found a position that gives me sound you get. I wonder if you could do a YT short about it? Maybe Sweetwater can give you a camera you can put inside the guitar? Anyway... always grateful for your excellent and useful videos!
It's definitely easier with a pick BUT you can also do it using your index fingernail or the flesh of your thumb, it just won't he quite as loud with your thumb, but palm-wise all the same stuff still applies.
Kinda like a taco from the food truck in Ybor--not bad going down but that rebound... Take a look at how worn your strings are over the sound hole where you strum-they be deeeaaad But seriously folks-- good lesson- I know I struggled with palm muting until I realized you needed to move the heel of your hand around to optimize the string pairs you wanted to emphasize When i have given slide guitar lessons its the hardest thing to get across to students because without good muting you will get a mess of overtones in open tunings. To tie into another video of yours- Duane Allman was one of the best at articulating just the notes he needed. There is not much video of Duane but I have watched this a bunch of times and found it really helpful ( about 1 minute mark ruclips.net/video/mcAph-PqJP0/видео.html

Seriously people, Sean Daniel is probably the best guitar teacher out there. “Judo Chop” the strings got me palm muting like a boss in no time at all.
Thanks Caleb!
THANK YOU SEAN! It's so hard to find videos with upstroke palm muting, this is exactly what I was looking for
Happy to help!
Thank you, this is exactly what I was looking for! Most videos just talk about palm muting 101 and not beyond the absolute basics.
thankyou! you are the only guitar teacher on youtube who goes into depth on maintaining the mute on the up strum
so proper wrist technique and upstrokes, i know a perfect exercise
Hey now!
I'm a Rockstar
😉😂
Gracias❤
The thumb movement-best tip I found after MANY videos, really helped.
This lesson has helped me so much. I've finally got the sound I wanted to hear instead of just banging out chords relentlessly. Thank you Sean.
Just what I was looking for.
Best guitar teacher around

Thank you Sean, the concepts and tricks you show on this channel took this basic guitar player and set him on a path for bigger things!
So awesome to hear! Keep rockin!
Thanks a lot Sean. Mind opened for me !
So great to hear!

So cool to hear! Keep it up Carol and i'm happy to help!
Thanks for sharing your ideas.
Always happy to!
Best lesson on palm muting!
This is the exact problem I've had. Thank you so much!
Thanks so much for watching!
Beauty stuff man...appreciated. Insightful as expected...
So great to hear it helped!

Gotta use your pinky in that case
This guy is fantastic. Nice man, thanks!
Thanks so much!
Man i wish the video also said how to palm mute upwards, been trying to find a video on that. HUGE HELP!
great exercise for this. thank you

Great idea for a series!
one of my biggest problems right now is i cant mute all 6 strings at once. the highest sounding string in particualar is a problem
how long should it take to do this? I have been trying to practice but I can't get the hang of it. I am considering getting private lessons to work on this.
It's 2 years later, how's it coming? I'm just starting now.
This is virtually impossible, my pick point upwards on the up stroke and just catches the strings
It takes some work for sure.
@@seandaniel23 sounds ok down stroke but the up strum sounds twangy
it’s been a year have you gotten better
this took me about 15 or 20 hours of work before it became nice sounding. hope you put the hours in and are still playing
Super helpful - thanks so much!!

Tremolo picking and alternate picking next please :)
Do you fancy the surf rock sound, Sean?
Great ideas! I have to admit I haven't played too much surf rock but I need to look into it!
Happy New year, Sean.
Oh, yeah, It is great fun to play surf. Looking forward to a future video on that! :)
What model is your Taylor?
It's a GA3, love it!
_...so it's all about up & down strokes on the G-string area..._
I guess if you need to paraphrase it...
Wow. Judo chop the bridge. I'll have to try that.
Careful though!
Ouch. You'll be hearing from my lawyers, Daniel! Lol. Just kidding
Does anyone have an example of a specific song that would be played with this style of muting?
Yo sean, i ve just sperimented, and i think your advice is good, but the key to me is to use a thin pick, otherwise it gets really tricky.
Solution to problem: Go Hetfield style and only go down... twice as fast
Thanks man i needed this help....
Happy to help!
This is all fine and dandy when you do play with a pick. Palm muting without one is what's really challenging.
Exactly. DId u find a solution?
When people ask me how I know karate, I say that I practice judo chopping the bridge
I practice mixed martial arts.
M'on DIEU - Si BIEN. Merci, merci!
Thanks for checking it out!
It's hard to tell in the video, but is the pick supposed to be vertical to the strings? When I play, my pick becomes angled.
What's that blue thing?
I find this difficult to do since I dont play with a pick, is there anything different I have to do?
It's definitely easier with a pick BUT you can also do it using your index fingernail or the flesh of your thumb, it just won't he quite as loud with your thumb, but palm-wise all the same stuff still applies.
Your karate-chop analogy really helped. The term "Palm" muting is kind of confusing since the mouse of the hand has nothing to do with the muting.
Are there even chops in judo? I guess not, but hey, the most I learned about judo was from that Chinese karate anime.
Believe it or not, I'm not a judo expert.
my hand is so small and it's hard for me to mute the strings
I don’t think I understand it. I’m not sure i understand or getting the effect. Palm muting is fuzzy to me
Damn, I need to start training Judo
Always gotta be ready to kick some ass!
Miroslav Popovic No doubt! I just *knew* Kung Fu wud be as important as basic Math, someday ! 😁😁

Great comment. I'll have to keep that in mind when I try the slide stuff.

My hands are small!
Ever considered changing your name to Jack and adding an S to your surname ? :)
Wouldn't want to infringe any copyrights.
First, also thx for the lesson, palm muting is annoying for my
Also, judo doesn't use chops
But what about 'JUDO CHOP!'?
My issue is palm muting then unpalm muting, like the Master of Puppets intro
But chopping is cooking... Not judo
He looks like pewdepie🤔🤔🤔😂😂😂
I'm still dog shit
