  • Alan Colby reappears after a seven year absence, only to be murdered before he can claim his inheritance. The Lowells have been living off the Colby fortune, and now someone is trying to kill Henrietta Lowell, the matriarch of the family. Among the suspects are Prof. Bowen (who is paid handsomely by the Lowells for his valuable psychic research), Fred and Janice Gage (who live off the Lowell fortune, which would have gone to Alan Colby), Prof. Bowen (who is paid handsomely by the Lowells for his valuable psychic research), Ulrich (who had a longstanding grudge against Alan Colby), Mr. Phelps (the executor of the Lowell estate) and Henrietta Lowell herself (who wants to continue psychic research) ...

I like that no matter how serious the crimes are there is always a bit of humor too uplift the dry sad terribleness of crimes committed, always something to laugh at or just smile!!! But the cases get solved!!!!

This is my favorite Charlie Chan movie for a number of reasons the gun the telescope the decoy the actors involved... Most importantly the absence of who is number one son... Pure detective work... And many surprises... I think this one is better than Sherlock Holmes... And having mystery... And then real explanation... one of my two favorite 1936 movies The other one being Charlie Chan at the circus

Thanks Mr. Ebert. The ones that are comparable to Holmes are Treasure Island and Wax Museum. I find it hard to watch Oland as Chan.

At 2.40 notice how his flashlight actually illuminates the hand in which he is holding it. Quite a trick!

Great commercials, but unfortunately they are constantly interrupted by some old black-and-white movie.

It appears the Golden Gate Bridge was under construction and not to far along (1933) I saw it in the background when Charlie Chan was flying into San Francisco.

@@fokkerd3red618 that is the San Francisco-Oakland
Bay Bridge going to Yerba Buena Island. It was completed
in 1936 six months before the Golden Gate Bridge.
