  • On Day 7 of the 2016 WSOP Main Event, Australia's James Obst and Michael Ruane collide in a massive multi-way pot.
The back-and-forth battle ends with Ruane shoving all-in with a straight flush, Obst tanking on the river with a full house, and one of the greatest folds in WSOP history.

@@crackcrack8636 you seriously think he bets and calls with rather weak hands like J10 or 1010 on the flop? Something you maybe expect from random fish online on microstakes, but these guys are pro's and plays the ME. Actually, playing the hand like Ruane did makes no sense with the hands you mention. QQ or JJ would never flat when Obst re-raises on the flop. You most likely put Obst on a combo draw in that spot so any decent player shoves to protect. Why let him get there? I know Ruane probably never has a bluff also but his play doesn't check out with anything else than 98dd. That's why the fold is so good.

An amazing hand and one that really shows the value of good hand reading. A straight flush is obviously an incredibly hard hand to have but it's the only one that really makes sense with the action. A set of queens or jacks is probably more likely to jam flop on such a wet board and they will almost certainly check back turn when the flush hits. And if Ruane is bluffing what could he possibly have? It's hard for him to have anything but a big made hand or a flush draw when he raises and then just calls on the flop so he'd have to be turning something like QJ or a flush into a bluff. 98cc makes perfect sense in that he doesn't want to get all the money in on the flop bets the turn as he will with his flushes but is still able to jam it for value on the river after the board pairs. I don't know if I could fold it in real time and it's always possible Ruane has something unorthodox in a massive pot but it's a spot where the straight flush is by far the most logical hand.

And considering the pot is huge and his shove has almost no technical fold equity Obst is a genius player that knows he is beat. He doesn't beat QQ, JJ, Q10, J10, 98clubs. He beats no value and there are no bluffs on that board. That board is 100% value and 77 is the worst of the hands on that board. And ruane doesn't shove AK clubs over the top he just calls after the board pairs. I told 77 there every time. Although if river was a 7 and he folds quads that would be an unconscious laydown

  • @LihtsaltMarek
    @LihtsaltMarek 4 года назад +1

It is much easier if you see the cards, but the fold was pretty straight-forward.
Ruanne just called before the flop, so you can pretty much rule about QQ. He could have JJ or AK.
Because he raised on the flop, then that means he couldn't have JT or QT. He might have done this with QT of clubs, but the T of clubs came on the turn, so that combination is also dead. He also can't have AK or TT, because he would never raise with it on the flop.
If you deduce that your opponent is never bluffing in this spot, then it is a fold. He would never go allin with a straight(98 or AK) or a flush(AK of clubs for example) if the board pairs and your opponent is leading on the river. He either has JJ or 98 of clubs.
That being said, I still feel it is much easier for me to analyze the hand while seeing the whole cards. I would have probably been a nonbeliver and called like monkey if I were in Obst shoes.

Rae Rawaili I totally agree with you, Ruane should bet a little more on the turn. Some where around 4.2m to 4.8m. And leave himself a perfect river shoving amount

Great read, although Ruane's flop raise and calling Obst's 3 bet left him exposed a little. I suppose you could argue that Ruane has JJ there by not 3 betting pre facing the UTG open, but that still seems pretty unlikely. QT and JT make no sense with that flop.

The people who don’t think this is an incredible fold are only thinking about the fold in terms of the final board “well he only has the 8th nuts so of course it’s a fold.” What these people don’t understand is that pretty much the only hand that Ruane could have here that beats Obst, based on the way that all of the action played out, was a straight flush. Which was why it was so sick that Obst called that that’s exactly what Ruane had and laid his hand down.

Nice fold especially since QQ certainly 3bets preflop and JJ might also. Would be easier fold if Q or J came on River since then QJ also beats you but hard to know it here.

  • @BrettMKW

Hell of a laydown, but not unheard of. Obst has the worst possible boat and Ruane would have no reason to shove the river with a flush (what worse hands call him?) but it was very impressive to read him precisely for the straight flush.

Had to put Ruane on the straight flush like he said. JJ or QQ reraises the flop on that wet board. Any combo of Q10 or J10 will not call a 4 bet on the flop.

Good laydown, but to be honest, definitely not as sick as a lot of people see it as. If you think about how the hand played from the start to the shove, the only hands Ruane could have are JJ and 98cc as played. QQ is of course possible too, but he would more likely 3-bet that pf. He wouldn't call Obst's rereraise on flop with anything else than QQ/JJ/nut flush draw/98cc and he'd never shove the nut flush to Obst's bet on the river with the paired board. Obst is literally beating the nut flush only and that hand only calls the river, at best.

He has the worst full house possible. Forget the straight flush. Ruann could have a lot of hands that he's betting hard. And nut flush ain't one of them. Not that hard a lay down.
