SRK was not defining himself.. he was using his life journey as metaphor to depict how Humanity have journey-ed itself. like when he was rising in his life with his dream in mumbai, at that time humanity was also blossoming and as he grew old in his mid life crisis then humanity is also witnessing various problems ( todays world).. and in end he requested to fix by sharing love using resources.

SRK continues to represent India on global platforms but its sad some people still continue to undermine him and will look for faults or negatives in anything he does. Even in this talk people will say it was too idealistic or that he just spoke well but is overrated, he doesn't deserve to be there etc. But the fact is that he is actually one of the most genuine and witty personalities, sometimes people misinterpret his humour and wit for arrogance; but his deep level of intellect is something few understand. Also, people may question his message of 'love and peace' but I think it applies in today's society more than ever, I mean the very fact that small instances of kindness that were common back in the day are now taken as 'faith in humanity restored' speaks volumes about the world we live in. Moreover, unlike a vast majority of actors in bollywood, SRK has reached the heights of success people can only dream of by the power of sheer hard work, so he knows what he is saying and the only people who consider it unrealistic would be those who aren't themselves willing to put the effort he has to achieve their dreams, or even effort to step out of their daily comfort of being in the rat race to observe the world around them and make a kind gesture and follow the message he is promoting. Even with SRK out of the picture I just wish sometimes that people would be more optimistic and look at the positives rather than always be negative towards things, especially when all someone is trying to do is spread positivity and love.

I'm not against people who give appropriate criticism, but those who are hateful and call him anti-national etc. I know not many over here would be so low as to say that but in general the reaction that he gets sometimes is uncalled for. And yes many other people represent India on global stages and they do also receive recognition, check out Shashi Tharoor at TedX, SRK is just more popular which is why he attracts more viewers, but that does not take away from the fact that he tried his best to promote a good message.

Just so you know ,this talk was in Vancouver and not in the states. Also he wasn't addressing it to just Americans. He was addressing it to the world. He talked about himself so as to enhance the analogy. Also as for twitter part ,it was a facet of his topic called thoughts on humanity, fame and love which is just not about twitter. Also, Ted talks are global . They are seen by people all around the world. It's not just to address a certain group of people.

He wasn't just talking about America; he was talking about the whole world and the atmosphere that we have currently. Let me explain:
    1. Wall thing: America, yes.
    2. Faith thing: Islam and Isis and other stuff.
    3. Nuclear bombs: India Pakistan heightened tensions at the border [Both are nuclear countries and Pakistan keeps threatening us with their nuclear bombs. Pakistan has First Use Policy while India has NO First Use Policy].
    4. Oceans thing: The general perception that we don't need to protect environment.
    5. Mars: A few years ago India became the first country to reach Mars on their maiden try. A reference to that.
    6. War: Syria, Yemen and other war torn countries.
And what he meant was that Humanity has to love itself to survive, just like an aging movie star. If it does not love itself, and thus take care of itself, it will not survive because an aging movie star that does not love himself, will not be cast anymore as he won't be taking care of his looks and himself. He won't be an aging movie star anymore, he would just be an aging old man.
Hope that cleared up the confusion.
P.S. This TED talk was in Canada.

For those that didn't understand what SRK said like jabby,
    1) He was comparing the progression of humanity through the 90s and early 2000s with his own journey and imotions associated roughly, throughout the years.
    2) He wasn't talking to the America or any country in particular but to the whole of humanity/world.
    3) He was urging humanity to be like the stereotipycal self loving movie star i.e for humanity to love itself as a whole / for humans to be compassionate to others truly.

Jaby, this was a TED Talk and an official TED Conference in Canada. The Audience is very well equipped in this conference because it was the same one where Elon Musk was giving a Talk before SRK so mostly well versed people were there. I said mostly hehe. And it was also said this was a audience where 90% of them didn't knew about SRK or bollywood so mostly geeks.
The subject matter was about the modern age and the youth. The Internet has become a place for trolling and spreading hate and rumors. Now Politics is one of the most affected in today's modern world due to internet. America's election was hugely influenced by the online news and rumors as also in case of India's politics. As Internet is such a huge platform and free for all to give a piece of their mind, negativity has to be drawn down to a minimum. Love is something we should practice more and spread to others. Encouragement to people to do better. Internet or anywhere the youth today are more educated than ever in all of the centuries. So if the hate through any form if it keeps spreading it will eventually perish us. The whole world is at risk today due to hatred spread through religion, internet and politics. We have wrong leaders chosen due to the fear that these people have instilled in us. So simply SRK meant to say if we don't start spreading love, we will have a dark future. And the best time and resource to do this is NOW.

What he actually meant is humans have became mean, they want more power, humanity is turning face off from like say people in Syria who are killed everyday due to power struggle between USA and Russia, and we easily ignore this and we feel that we cant do anything for that, but actually we can if we had love for them we would try our best to stop this wrong things but we dont have it. And building a wall was just one point to it like a metaphor, the main point was we dont love other humans, nature our planet we are loosing it destroying it.

Jaby.. it's not his thoughts are heavy. If your thoughts are heavy, its difficult to lift them, let alone impart it to the world.
The thing that happens in stages of enlightenment, is your thoughts becomes lighter and lighter.. carries immense wisdom, but lighter.
When your thoughts becomes lighter, it's a sign of a spiritual journey.

I think he said the best thing in the world. He said, "no power or poverty can elevate you or put you down. The only thing that you need to live through is love." True. Even if we are at our bottom we don't break down until we find ourselves lonely, abandoned and devoid of people who care for us. At that time if we have someone, be that a friend, relative, a pet, their love lifts us again. And when we are at the top, if don't have people to share love with, the entire success sucks.
Later he picked that famous line from India which says, "you can learn a lot of things and still be a fool. Only a man who understands love is truly wise." He explained it with how it matters. Build walls and create barriers, or build homes and welcome everyone. iT MAKES A HUGE DIFFERENCE!!!

well jaby, he (SRK) is known as the king of romance, so he thought if there's something i can tell the world to do, its to love more. And from an artist who has sold the dream of love to billions, its the panacea to all that plagues the world. Its not over-simplistic, its whats called a root cause analysis.
Even Swami Vivekananda ( A great Indian Monk, late 1800s) had said that those who exercise tend to sin less. Some might call it too simplistic, or you can see the virtue of feeling more positive and hopeful when you've worked out in the morning.

I wonder if he was talking about USA... I mean yes, he was talking about building walls etc.. But, I do not feel that he was intending to target american audience... I feel the talk came from his pure feelings, and the examples he chose are "existing".. and hence he chose them.. But, all in all.... yea... it was very touching....

d moment u realize "kuch smjh me nhi aaya inko."..
srk started his journey with tHis new technology and scientific world, ( before this he was clear with things in life cuz everything means what it says)
his journey started afta death of his father. in this cruel world whr humanity was also hitting this new era of technology n fasten world. He was enjoying his life, he was flying,
in his mid age when he thot internet is only for gud deeds he got into some trouble cuz of this new internet world whr everything is different with wht it seems n d same things happening with humanity as well.
In his 50s( in the present time)before coming to this ted stage he saw himself in the mirror n thot that shud he has to change his face and ask the same question to humanity.
conclusion- he was trying to explain his beginning of success n humanity's success simultaneously. N wanted a change in him n humanity with love in them n itself. Cuz circle of life is ends from whr it started.

One thing I want to clarify here. The speech he ultimately gave is not entirely his creation. TED are very much in control of the ultimate version of the speech. This is why most TED talks conform to a particular time limit (18 - 19 minutes) and have a certain rhythm to it. Basically, the participants, after being invited, present a rough draft of what they want to say. TED then breaks it down and rewrites it according to their format, and rigorously coaches the speaker over several sessions to ensure uniformity among speakers in terms of the overall style. They also make sure you are fluent in every aspect of the speech according to the beats and bullet points they provide. So, the direction and components of the speech are not completely SRK's creation but also TED's. Just wanted to point that out, because Jaby mentioned he was a bit confused by the way the speech was designed. There is a wonderful episode on TED talks in the Roman Mars podcast '99 Percent Invisible' which explains the TED process. Of course, this is about the major TED events and not the TEDx events.

Whenever I see Shah rukh sir talking, I feel like being with Jim Carey sir. Although their styles and tones are different, I feel they both have, as you say, "deep thoughts". They can bring out their thoughts in simple terms at the same time poetically. They both act, not as they are, but as people see them. I love them both😊💐

hi jaby ..first of all its an honour for Indian culture and our representative to be on your youtube space and I would like to tell you that you are right about the fact you mentioned in the video that you are not too much aware about SRK and if he really meant what he said...this is my first ever comment to your video because I wanted to indulge to with him and his nature .. so I would just like to tell you in the most simpler words that trust me he is what he looked like and he actually meant it. btw m not SRK's biggest fan or any thing but since I have seen him from my childhood till now, all his interviews, his attitude problems, media coverage and his every tinny little things. I know for sure he means it. not sure if you read all " LONG and LENGTHY " comments but I would appritiate a normal reply like "ok" or " yes" to my comment if possible. Just to get an assurance that my million words in the comment didn't go waste. love your videos keep up the good work.
    Regards
    India
    with love
