He saw how much effort she put into her appearance and communicated his astonishment and appreciation. It was the first thing he said. And you know that while he was moonstruck by her appearance, he loved her before the transformation and he loved her after. Compare that with her father who didn't notice anything about his date's outfit and couldn't care less about her.

Moonstruck is a wonderful movie, with great performances by everyone. It’s interesting that the music from La Boheme, the opera they see, is interspersed throughout the movie.

Nicolas Cage is one of the few actual Italians in this movie, real last name Coppola, nephew of the famous director of "The Godfather", Francis Ford Coppola. Though only on his father's side, as his mother was German and Polish. Raised in Long Beach, California, he, Cher (half Armenian) and Olympia Dukakis (Greek) all had to learn to speak with a Brooklyn Italian accent from the actress who portrays Cher's aunt in the movie, Julie Bovasso, who was raised in the culture, and a sought-after acting and voice coach. Apparently, Cher rehearsed each and every line, repeating after her, in order for it to be an authentic performance. Others of Italian ancestry are Loretta's "dad", Vincent Gardenia, and her grandfather, the "old man", Corrado Gianna. Check out the background videos for a treat!
