Imagine if the rest of Canada said every business has to speak English, even amongst it's own employees, and regardless of whether or not they are dealing with foreign clients in other languages! Mass exodus has already occurred. Between 1850-1900 half the French Canadian population left for the USA. Back then, the English ran the economy. We were supposed to get "economic benefits" from the English minority....maybe it's time for independence....
As a French Canadian I find this idiotic. It's time for Québec to stop focusing on forcing the French language and instead start supporting French culture. We have so much more than just the language but they've put all the energy into the language, which is something that naturally evolves with time anyway, and it has overshadowed our actual culture.

Agreed the resentment this breeds on both sides is super unhealthy. I was kind of an angry young man and I resented French (and French people in general) so much that I went out of my way to not learn French. I regret it so much, it's such an asset to speak multiple languages. Why is Switzerland able to speak multiple languages without any issues? They speak fluent German, French, English, etc.

As a 60 y/o in Ontario who took French throughout high school with teachers who spoke with Parisian accents, I missed out on learning the true Francophone dialects of our country. I am embarrassed then and today that I cannot carry on a conversation in Quebec. But I feel even sadder for young Quebecois who will be limited to one province with even fewer opportunities to learn English (and other languages). As others have noted, the exodus of the 1970s will repeat itself.

I was born and raised in Montreal. I lived there until I retired, eight years ago. When I did retire, I couldn't wait to get the hell out. My father was English-speaking and my mother was French-speaking so conversing in either language was easy but I never considered myself a francophone. The only reason I stayed in Quebec for so long was because of my business, otherwise I would have left in the early 70's with the rest of my friends. I feel that I wasted a good part of my life putting up with Quebec politics and every stupid and idiotic government since the Robert Bourassa government and the introduction of their Bill 22. Montreal went from being the financial capital of Canada to third rate big city. I still consider Montreal third rate. I'm all for separation. I think Canada should throw Quebec out of Canada. We're not a bilingual country, no matter what the federal government says. I also believe that appeasing Quebec is bad business for the rest of Canada. I now live in BC. I don't need Quebec. I'm happy and doing very well without them.

You know that being bilingual as only helped people who grew up speaking French a higher chance at getting jobs in more prestigious sectors. Most government positions are taken up by French Canadians. The notion of being bilingual has been set up so that only people from Quebec, Ottawa and French Canadians have a better chance at getting employment in higher tiered sectors. I've seen this happen in Ottawa.

My company in Ontairo uses a VOIP phone system that's headquartered in Quebec, if they're not allowed to speak in English to us we're obviously going to switch to another company. I’ve been trying to learn french for the past 1 and a half. But Ultimately gave up because the teacher I have for level 3 was horrible. I am a Montrealer and all languages and cultures used to be free to express their uniqueness here before Bill 101.. It was a joy to live here. Slowly over the last 40 years this BS has slithered and grown.. taking away store signs, making English writing in stores either half the size or removed entirely, streets renamed, municipal services and bylaws in French only, dozens of English schools closed, radio stations controlled for French content, over a million people have left the province, but they are not happy yet. Now the medical and legal systems have to be cleansed of any trace of English. But be sure, it will still never be enough because this is motivated by hatred, not by preservation of language. I agree with yellow shirt guy, protection of the French language IS important (especially since a lot of Canadians actually don’t speak any French outside of Quebec, myself included, I live in Alberta and I know less than 10 people that speak French) But this law is ridiculous, why not just force more French music and tv shows on Canadian radio and tv, make the schooling system better so that kids want to learn French. This law is just gonna hurt people. There’s much better ways to protect the French language.
Good ideas except for the word "force". What about actually creating more worthy content in French, providing tax and other benefits if a person is fluent in 2 official languages (see the trick here, it would apply both ways).
When you live in a Province which is 95-98% English and less than 2% Speak French there's no practical reason to learn French Cause you won't be using it anyway.

More wasted time and money on something that is destine to disappear. I come from a french speaking family and I know very well you cant force people to learn anything let alone a complicated language the most people in Canada don't speak and care very little about learning it. Spanish or mandarin are far more important language to learn then French. The Quebec government keeps thinking that generation Y some how cares about a language you cant used anywhere in North or South America and some of EU. By doing this the government forces business to choose and we lose out on some good paying jobs and great economic opportunity's for the province. All this so the last of generation X can hold on til then end....No one over 60 should be allowed to hold an office in the government that take decision that will effect future generation negatively for years to come.
I agree that Quebec's unique language, alongside the myriad First Nations languages in this country, should be protected. I think our French classes should focus on Quebecois French rather than Parisian French, and I think there needs to be a lot more funding put towards language education more generally. I don't think Bill 96 or legislation like it will help. Protecting a language means exposing more people to the language, making resources for learning the language as accessible as possible, ensuring that no one is forced to choose between spending time in these classes and putting food on the table at home, etc. You can't scare or punish people into getting good at a language when the resources aren't even in place to accommodate every person who's enthusiastic about learning it

@@backagain5216 Lets say that you move in Spain and you find a job, for sure you'll have to speak in english because you don't know spanish, you'll have to work with the people that know english, but your work environnement will be spanish, and over time you will learn spanish. The problem in Montreal right now is that english people do not learn french over time because they can work in english all day long, I have coworker that are born in Montreal, went to english school and now work in english and 40 years later they still do not know a single word of french. You might say that it is a good thing and that everyone should be free to choose its work language, well, this cause a big problem, as immigrant are learning english instead of french and can still work and live in a 100% english world. Over time this dilute the french, it is assimilation at work and right now all expert agree that it is happening and something need to be done to stop it. Bill 96 is not perfect and I do not agree with everything in it but it's better then doing nothing. And Btw, this bill does not prevent people from being bilingual and everyone will continue to have english services, the english college and university will continue to be english, they will just add 3 basic french course (free of charge) so that people can at least understand a little bit of french.

The third guy makes so much sense. Who would the Legault government ever think that limiting English education would make Quebec attractive for companies or people? Taxes are too high and when companies have a choice they will locate to Ontario, BC or Alberta rather than put up with restrictive language laws and high taxes. People will do the same.
If you have to bring in a law to force people to learn language, then sorry to say you have already lost the battle. Learning a language should be individual's choice. People voluntarily learn English because it opens the world of opportunities for them. Likewise, give people a reason and an incentive to learn French. Simply forcing is not the way forward.

I was in Montreal for 4 days earlier this month and I talked to immigrants, at the park and elsewhere, and I asked them "Are you going to learn French", all of them, a handful of them, said no but they don't say why.

I learned how to speak read and write French in spite of having the misfortune of wasting time studying it for five years in Saskatchewan. It is very easy to see that the deep state that struggling hard to find teachers that are incompetent enough to make sure no student ever becomes fluent. There is no reason at all that most of our children should be fluent in French and Spanish as well as English when they graduate high school. They do it in Europe and everywhere else. The definition of being trilingual is speaking three languages. The definition of being bilingual is speaking two languages. The definition of being MONOlingual is being North American. Our schools are a waste of time.

I am French Canadian, fully bilingual and I consider it a cultural richness not a political tool. I have members of my family who do not speak a word of English, so they say, but listen to English songs only and speak a Franglais that is personally annoying ( Hey Bob, check mé break , sont fuckés). Most advocate for the French culture that I know, don't even respect the French they pretend to want to protect. As long as we leave the referendum on Independence away from the discussion, we can all get along fine without Government intervening in out daily lives.

He hired a local secretary to take notes for him and translate them to Parisian French for him. He said even the grammar was convoluted compared to modern Parisian French.

Laws are always founded on a good idea. I get french speakers should have the right to be served in french in Quebec, but I do not understand why it should be restricting the langage between coworkers. The goal should be to offer the option to be served in french, not to eliminate other langages... Meanwhile The Independent Advisory Committee mandated by the Office of the National Assembly of Quebec on February 16, 2023 stated that Quebec National Assembly members should get a 30% pay raise (base salary will then be $130k), and the premier get another $60k (new salary to be $270k). This will encourage “diversity” and encourage better candidates to run…they will be the highest paid government workers of their kind, while rents rise, and women are told to not wear hijabs, and children are told they can’t pray in private in school…what an insane province. I’d be mad as heck if I was living there with a median salary of $40k.
Students will be taught by instructors in Metis and Quebecois French. Course material will have been written in Conventional French. Agreed the resentment this breeds on both sides is super unhealthy. I was kind of an angry young man and I resented French (and French people in general) so much that I went out of my way to not learn French. I regret it so much, it's such an asset to speak multiple languages.

As a French Canadian, I am ashamed. This is literally a 40 year step back. Look at who is passing those laws... 50+ years old folks, speaking for the future of the youth. You have to wake up! This is not 1980 anymore. Business & technology is all universalised in English. I can't believe as a French Canadian I won't be able to send my children to an English school... to give my child the best chances to be successful in this fast evolving world where some people now works on a daily bases with other people around the world via live online communication methods (group call for example). I am blessed to have learned the English on the internet by talking to people around the world on a daily bases.
I have seen people miss great opportunities on the business side because they were just not enough fluent in English. Sadly, the English class you get when you are going to a French school will simply not make you fluent enough for many jobs.

As a 60 y/o in Ontario who took French throughout high school with teachers who spoke with Parisian accents, I missed out on learning the true Francophone dialects of our country. I am embarrassed then and today that I cannot carry on a conversation in Quebec. But I feel even sadder for young Quebecois who will be limited to one province with even fewer opportunities to learn English (and other languages). As others have noted, the exodus of the 1970s will repeat itself.

I was born and raised in Montreal. I lived there until I retired, eight years ago. When I did retire, I couldn't wait to get the hell out. My father was English-speaking and my mother was French-speaking so conversing in either language was easy but I never considered myself a francophone. The only reason I stayed in Quebec for so long was because of my business, otherwise I would have left in the early 70's with the rest of my friends. I feel that I wasted a good part of my life putting up with Quebec politics and every stupid and idiotic government since the Robert Bourassa government and the introduction of their Bill 22. Montreal went from being the financial capital of Canada to third rate big city. I still consider Montreal third rate. I'm all for separation. I think Canada should throw Quebec out of Canada. We're not a bilingual country, no matter what the federal government says. I also believe that appeasing Quebec is bad business for the rest of Canada. I now live in BC. I don't need Quebec. I'm happy and doing very well without them.

You know that being bilingual as only helped people who grew up speaking French a higher chance at getting jobs in more prestigious sectors. Most government positions are taken up by French Canadians. The notion of being bilingual has been set up so that only people from Quebec, Ottawa and French Canadians have a better chance at getting employment in higher tiered sectors. I've seen this happen in Ottawa.
QC isn't pro-French. It's Anti-English. Because of it, i've already made plans to leave before the end of the year. I have a first class honours, I work in the Games Industry and have over 8 years of experience in my field, and ive lived here for 3 years. My Permanent Residency was rejected last month because I don't speak french and now this law happens.

My company in Ontairo uses a VOIP phone system that's headquartered in Quebec, if they're not allowed to speak in English to us we're obviously going to switch to another company. I’ve been trying to learn french for the past 1 and a half. But Ultimately gave up because the teacher I have for level 3 was horrible. If they expect people to learn in 6 months, they have to weed out the bad teachers. I and other students reported him and they did nothing to correct the situation.

This province has become a dictatorship and I don't use that term lightly. It has nothing to do with "protecting the French language" and hasn't for a long time. I am a Montrealer and all languages and cultures used to be free to express their uniqueness here before Bill 101.. It was a joy to live here.
Slowly over the last 40 years this BS has slithered and grown.. taking away store signs, making English writing in stores either half the size or removed entirely, streets renamed, municipal services and bylaws in French only, dozens of English schools closed, radio stations controlled for French content, over a million people have left the province, but they are not happy yet.
Now the medical and legal systems have to be cleansed of any trace of English. But be sure, it will still never be enough because this is motivated by hatred, not by preservation of language. Simply hatred.

I agree with yellow shirt guy, protection of the French language IS important (especially since a lot of Canadians actually don’t speak any French outside of Quebec, myself included, I live in Alberta and I know less than 10 people that speak French) But this law is ridiculous, why not just force more French music and tv shows on Canadian radio and tv, make the schooling system better so that kids want to learn French. This law is just gonna hurt people. There’s much better ways to protect the French language.
Good ideas except for the word "force". What about actually creating more worthy content in French, providing tax and other benefits if a person is fluent in 2 official languages (see the trick here, it would apply both ways).
When you live in a Province which is 95-98% English and less than 2% Speak French there's no practical reason to learn French Cause you won't be using it anyway.

I come from a french speaking family and I know very well you cant force people to learn anything let alone a complicated language the most people in Canada don't speak and care very little about learning it. Spanish or mandarin are far more important language to learn then French. By doing this the government forces business to choose and we lose out on some good paying jobs and great economic opportunity's for the province. I agree that Quebec's unique language, alongside the myriad First Nations languages in this country, should be protected. I think our French classes should focus on Quebecois French rather than Parisian French, and I think there needs to be a lot more funding put towards language education more generally. I don't think Bill 96 or legislation like it will help. Protecting a language means exposing more people to the language, making resources for learning the language as accessible as possible, ensuring that no one is forced to choose between spending time in these classes and putting food on the table at home, etc. You can't scare or punish people into getting good at a language when the resources aren't even in place to accommodate every person who's enthusiastic about learning it

@@backagain5216 Lets say that you move in Spain and you find a job, for sure you'll have to speak in english because you don't know spanish, you'll have to work with the people that know english, but your work environnement will be spanish, and over time you will learn spanish. The problem in Montreal right now is that english people do not learn french over time because they can work in english all day long, I have coworker that are born in Montreal, went to english school and now work in english and 40 years later they still do not know a single word of french. You might say that it is a good thing and that everyone should be free to choose its work language, well, this cause a big problem, as immigrant are learning english instead of french and can still work and live in a 100% english world. Over time this dilute the french, it is assimilation at work and right now all expert agree that it is happening and something need to be done to stop it. Bill 96 is not perfect and I do not agree with everything in it but it's better then doing nothing.
And Btw, this bill does not prevent people from being bilingual and everyone will continue to have english services, the english college and university will continue to be english, they will just add 3 basic french course (free of charge) so that people can at least understand a little bit of french.

Taxes are too high and when companies have a choice they will locate to Ontario, BC or Alberta rather than put up with restrictive language laws and high taxes. People will do the same.

If you have to bring in a law to force people to learn language, then sorry to say you have already lost the battle. Learning a language should be individual's choice. People voluntarily learn English because it opens the world of opportunities for them. Likewise, give people a reason and an incentive to learn French. Simply forcing is not the way forward.

I learned how to speak read and write French in spite of having the misfortune of wasting time studying it for five years in Saskatchewan. It is very easy to see that the deep state that struggling hard to find teachers that are incompetent enough to make sure no student ever becomes fluent. There is no reason at all that most of our children should be fluent in French and Spanish as well as English when they graduate high school. They do it in Europe and everywhere else.
The definition of being trilingual is speaking three languages. The definition of being bilingual is speaking two languages.

I am French Canadian, fully bilingual and I consider it a cultural richness not a political tool. I have members of my family who do not speak a word of English, so they say, but listen to English songs only and speak a Franglais that is personally annoying ( Hey Bob, check mé break , sont fuckés). Most advocate for the French culture that I know, don't even respect the French they pretend to want to protect. As long as we leave the referendum on Independence away from the discussion, we can all get along fine without Government intervening in out daily lives.

Ontario cater to multiple languages. Quebec went through this years ago. Had to reintroduce English as they ended up with a generation that couldn’t function in the business world. Some immigrant homebodies never learn the language, remain in their ethnic areas. When you bring in large swathes of people they never adapt or comprehend or learn anything about ‘their new country’. You end up with many mini ethnic groups, sticking together which is natural, but they bring their ethnic beliefs, differences and prejudices with them. Quebec made the rest of Canada go bilingual years ago. They should remember that Canada is bilingual, that means two languages. If you get a ticket in Quebec it is usually in French. Everything in the rest of canada is in both languages. French Quebec want us to respect them but they do not respect English Canada. Take the shoddy French/English translations of our ‘highly educated’ prime minister. French/English garbled together, none of which is comprehensive.
As far as the purists are concerned they wish to live as they did in the 1600s. They wish to eliminate all non-French influences. I expect they will get what they want and anyone who does not speak french should go somewhere else. Ans they will.

@@neoqwerty A friend had to go to from Paris to Montreal for a baning meeting. It was in french and he said he could barely understand most of the meeting. He hired a local secretary to take notes for him and translate them to Parisian French for him. He said even the grammar was convoluted compared to modern Parisian French.

Laws are always founded on a good idea. I get french speakers should have the right to be served in french in Quebec, but I do not understand why it should be restricting the langage between coworkers. The goal should be to offer the option to be served in french, not to eliminate other langages... Such as the social worker should be able to use the langage of her clients, it just makes perfect sense.

Meanwhile The Independent Advisory Committee mandated by the Office of the National Assembly of Quebec on February 16, 2023 stated that Quebec National Assembly members should get a 30% pay raise (base salary will then be $130k), and the premier get another $60k (new salary to be $270k). This will encourage “diversity” and encourage better candidates to run…they will be the highest paid government workers of their kind, while rents rise, and women are told to not wear hijabs, and children are told they can’t pray in private in school…what an insane province. I said it before and I’ll say it again , most if not all immigrant specially their kids usually speak English and or French and their native tongue . Where’s the language police for their native tongue ? Education and language specifically , starts at home .

Check Kijiji just for fun , half the French adds are majorly misspelled and I’m not talking spelling but sintax . Educate your kids and u won’t need to spend millions if not billions

Montreal should start petitioning to separate itself from Quebec and become its own province. We have the population and land mass, although we are in a french province but the majority of montrealers are more or less bilingual. We have our own multi-cultural diversity and we are proud of it!
@Gooossey there’s also NDG,CDN and downtown that are heavily Anglo based.
@Gooossey depends which area of downtown your talking about. From Westmount Atwater to McGill is pretty much all English then you have the gay village which is more french

Whenever I go down to Quebec, a lot of the people who can speak English just pretend they don’t know. Eventually you’ll find one person who will help you out
We have an educational system that doesn't promote 2 languages. IT SHOULD!
