The ball almost impossible to see but you can still see some great shot making, between the players!

Fun factoid: 1977 was the last year the US Open was held on clay (actually it was called hard-true; a gritty, granular bastard cousin of muddy clay). Also, Jimmy Connors will forever be the only player to win the US Open on grass, clay, and hard courts. Quite a feat. Congrats to Vilas.

I was a big Vilas fan. And yes, his net play, plus pounding Connors' weaker forehand, won thus match. Not to mention his great strengths: backhand pass, and a first-rate overhead

Vilas had that classic Latin American southpaw stance. He and Roberto Duran reminded me of each other

Vilas among whit Borg popularized the top-spin in all hits and positions. the development of the flat backhand of Connors was amazing, like your indomable spirit. Jimbo conserved the N°1 of the ATP ránking in 1977, but Willy was by far the N°1 of the Grand Prix, and clerarly the best in the world this year. Two of the greatest and influential players ever.

What this highlight doesn't show is that Connors refused to shake Vilas hand at the end. Loved Vilas, he was a gentleman and a great player.

@Leverwork1. Har-Tru is not cheap sand! Har-Tru is made of crushed slate and is not FAKE CLAY. The French Open at Roland Garros is not played on clay either--it is played on crushed brick!

Also Vilas had a great slice backhand, with a lot of bite. This was probably his greatest moment, though don't forget Masters '74 on grass when he beat Newcombe, Borg and Nastase.
I do think he should have been consensus no.1 in'77, just had more impressive year than Borg. Borg's wins over him were in minor events ( and then Jan 78 Masters).
Btw, Vilas had another great win over Connors in that Masters, on carpet. 7-5 in the 3rd set

I think in 1977 Vilas had 44 wins in a row a record that still stands. Why he was not ranked No. 1 is a mystery to me? It seems that even computers could be biased. Even the lesser players like Ferrero, Moya, Rios or Rafter were being positioned as No. 1 players. Why not Vilas who had almost 1000 wins and multiple GS wins in his career.

I have to disagree with you leverwork because the best US players in those days weren't as good on har tru (not cheap sand by the way) as they were on grass and other faster surfaces. They moved the stadium because the old Westside Tennis club was too small to handle the big crowds so they moved it to Flushing Meadow. I would agree that deco turf was an advantage for the United States players.

This was a growing up period for Jimmy in having to accept losing, as he shows his lack of class at the end of the match. I love the FAKE clay the Americans use to call this . More like cheap sand.
Funny how the U.S. Open always changed the surface back then based on the best chance the women or men's players could win there own tournament.
Grass, Cheap Sand clay, grass, hard, deco 1, then 2, planes flying over the stadium, moved the stadium ,then back to regular hard court.

What - you mean changing to clay just as Borg and Vilas - and Panatta and Orantes - were peaking? The year they changed to clay, all the top Americans were fast court players: Connors, Ashe, Tanner, Gerulaitis. I think you're good at conspiracy theories, not so good on logic.......
