Vilas' greatest masterpiece. One of the best games of his life. Here he ratified the No. 1 in the world, which he had already achieved at Roland Garros a few months before.
Vilas tells in his documentary on Netflix, that before that game, he warmed up for 2 hours straight at full speed and that he entered the court totally sweaty but not tired. He was like that, an obsessive, lonely and mental madman. Before the Roland Garros final of that glorious 1977 against Gottfried, he warmed up 7 hours before entering the court, something never seen before.
Thank you. Excellent quality. Captures a time long forgotten, almost like a prize fight atmosphere that tennis used to have. Was that Trabert at 1:10:32 telling Sumerall when the mike wasn't supposed to be on, "They used to call this a sissy sport."? Well, they unfortunately did, and it sure was not.
I am really appreciative of all your videos. I think you have the best channel on RUclips. If you have already posted it, I'm sorry. But do you have the Lendl-Gerulaitis Masters where Vitas was up two sets to love, and Lendl came back?
Strange to see Jimmy at set all and 4-2 up in the third - looking like the momentum was with him. But then he won only 2 of the last 13 games - whoosh......
) . Vilas ha giocato un'ottima partita .
Thank you so much, I didn’t think there’d ever be a high quality version of this match up.

I was 7 years old when I watched this match with my parents. I remember that shot of Chris Evert watching during the 4th set.
Wow! Fearless

Wow, the guy was very strong, obviously.
This match took me by total surprise..I thought for sure, Jimmy would have won this match..remember it well, since I was a freshman in College..
I love the sound of the gut strings that they used to use. The modern polys play better but don't sound as good.

Vilas was strong and better that day!
The real problem of the Vilas race was Björn Borg.

Grande Guille!

Are there any men’s pro tournaments on green clay anymore?
The US Men’s Clay Court Championships are apparently still on Har-Tru clay courts like the one shown here but they are maroon and not green clay

La hora cumbre del Gran Willy. El verdadero número 1 de 1977
I’m sure this is one that Connors would like to have back.
Genius! You will already have your deserved award of having been #1 never recognized for being Latino and not being American, as Rod Laver said
How many know this was the last US Open played on clay? Not many I'd bet.
The lack of professionalism in both tournament logistics and broadcasting is staggering
