- Hey Tennis Fans. This is Part 1 highlights of the Boca Raton, Florida final between archrivals Jimmy Connors and Bjorn Borg. Great commentary by Pat Summerall and Tony Trabert.
Note: I do NOT own the rights of this. Am merely a tennis enthusiast and just felt this deserved to be seen and enjoyed on the very popular facility You Tube.
Aw..man I remembered watching this at my grandparents home in Fremont California, those good old days..I was 12 years old. The 70’s and 80’s were the best times

the more you watch of Connors from the late 70s/early 80s, the more you appreciate what the guy was able to do in his career... he played tennis in a way that it just doesn't seem possible that you could be successful. It was like Connors was able to give the tennis ball a mind of its own.
Dont forget, he did it with a all steel racquet with a sweet spot the size of a grape, for control, lol.
Connors overall has a great game
He has good ground strokes. He has a good serve. He can approach good and play the net and move well.

The pace they're playing at is perfect as far as I'm concerned, lots of variety as well with Connors attacking the net , great to watch .
Wow this match was amazing. It’s unbelievable the control Connors had with the T2000 and the way he was able to volley with it.
This is actually a Lacoste ( Wilson bought the patent ) . It was not really tougher to play with it than with the traditionnal wooden ones.
I agree. I could not use one of those racquets because they were like a trampoline in which I did not feel I had control or good feel.
See him in 73and 74.the nadel of the 70s. Brutal
McEnroe, Borg, and Lendl said Connors was the hardest hitter of the players at the top back then. You can tell by those flat, hard groundstrokes and approach shots.
It's actually one of the very few matches where you can see Borg get real angry on the court. Connors acted like a jerk quite a few times and Borg didn't like it one bit. Besides he never really played well on that surface that was Jimbo's favorite maybe because it was actually kind of fast and Björn played like it was slow (like on European clay courts where he was the best). By the way Borg won that 3rd set 6.3 and the tournament. They played 2 more finals in Boca Raton in 1978 and 1979 and Borg won both of them. Thanks for sharing!

Borg loved this faster clay surface also. No advantage here for Connors.
Spot on analysis of Borg's play on HarTru. He tried the baseline game against Connors on HarTru, and it was a losing strategy. Jimmy was a master on that American "clay", and Bjorn never played well on it. Borg generally dominated Jimmy on just about every other surface with an all court game and strong serving, but for some reason, Bjorn was passive on HarTru. Jimmy ate him alive. Ironically, Jimmy hated that euro clay and rarely played there, while Bjorn was the clay master (before Rafa)...Bjorn rarely lost on the red clay.
Connors has to be considered one of the 10 greatest players of all time. You can how crisp and deep his strokes were and he was excellent at the net. His serve was not huge but he was one of the greatest returners alongside Djokovic and Agassi. Connors doesn’t get enough credit for how good he really was. That’s why he still holds the record for most tournaments won.

I heard someone (maybe Mary Carillo?) say that Jimmy May not have been the best player ever but he was the most important player. I can’t disagree.
he is considered one of them. A superstar, for crowds and for his colleagues. In the mid sixties was almost unbeatable, you can see Borg here, in his prime and having all sorts of trouble to beat the american

Connors (Along with Billie Jean King) put tennis on the map in the 70s, and he doesn't get much credit for that.

If any current tennis player wants to see what great footwork on a tennis court really is, then he or she should watch a Borg vs. Connors tennis match!
Especially Borg. He was a ballet dancer with a racquet. So quick and precise. Connors had some kind of natural instinct for positioning, he was not particularly fast, but he just knew where the ball was going to be.
Can't get much better than vintage Borg vs. Connors - two all-time greats. Thanks for posting. What a great video; five and a half minutes of pure exhilaration. Neither player is messing about, and I always loved Jimbo's never surrender and go for broke shots - can you hit it any flatter!?

The game is so much faster today....but these guys were more entertaining to watch. There's more variety in the points.
The issue is very simple. Nowadays everyone hits the ball hard due to the technology of the racket. In the 70'... and the 80' too (more or less), to win a point, they had to think where and how they were going to put the ball. Keep in mind that tennis, in those days, was like a game of chess in motion. You had to have patience to "suffocate" your opponent. At present it's enough to have a strong service or hit the ball hard to win the point. Tennis has lost the grace of watching tennis to see athletes who run a lot and hit hard.
Pete sampras and another power server did a test with wood rackets vs. Today's rackets and the difference on serves was 2 mph. Ground strokes were about the same also. The big difference, it was easier to hit top spin on the ball due to larger sweet spots. Also the camera tech of the 70s didn't show the speed and spin they did put on the ball, 60 70 80s were more variety of shots, today is whack it til someone has an error, you couldn't do that back then because of less surface area on the racket. Rosco tanner was clocked at 153mph several times, connors beat him 8 out of 9 times the faced each other.

Borg's backhand is the most unique shot I've ever seen.
Game so different then as the lack of power is so readily seen due to the racquets. Much slower but I think more entertaining as more shot making and volleys.

Jimbo is my heroes... He fight, nobody play as him .... He was, despite Borg, McEnroe, recordman of tournaments victories so many years...

Tremendous video. Classic match up. Two of the all time greats of the game.
This was a nice event to begin the year. Be nice to have something like it again. Despite old raquets, Connors hit pretty damn hard -- and Borg is incredibly quick. Djokovic almost seems to combine these two kind of games

And of course Connors mocked him to piss him off more, then on the next shot Connors serves his one ace of the year to further infuriate Borg!

3:37 I've watched Borg for years, and this is the first time I've seen him react like that after making an error.
Kevin Porter exactly, I watched Borg from the beginning of his career and I have never seen him react like this too. He was called IceBorg because of his very calm mind
That jerk Connors waving the finger at Borg is outrageous.
I would have to agree as well. But I also think that this match was sort of the tipping point in their rivalry. To my memory going forward Borg dominated the rivalry. Connors certainly had some success, ‘78 Open and a Masters win @MSG but I’m pretty sure Borg had a winning record from about this point forward. I suppose Jimmy should never have wagged his finger like that!!!

Me too. I also wonder if he was deliberately targeting Connors with that shot (which would also be a first)? We all know Lendl head hunted all the time but with Borg, it was almost unheard of.

Back in the days when tennis was a popular sport. For example, the local high school in my California town has five tennis courts. Back in those 1977 days on a sunny Saturday afternoon there would be people sitting on a bench waiting for a court to open up so they could play. These days on sunny Saturday afternoon there are zero people playing tennis and not a soul in sight anywhere near the tennis courts.
Sad ha. Many of those courts where I live in CA, they have converted them to pickleball courts..pathetic.

So impressed with Connors' net game. I knew he could volley, but he really seems to be piling on the aggression here. Maybe he realised he needed to against someone like Borg.

Borg was unbelievably fast. He could win points from impossible positions by using his speed. If he and Nadal were both playing with wooden rackets on clay, I believe it would be a toss up.

certainly one way of putting it. The decline of grass courts and serve-volleying would be a main factor.

Was able to purchase the Wilson T 2000 and the Wooden Wilson Jack Kramer for $3.99 each no tax baby! at Goodwill! Just saw the prices online whoa! It plays great. Just needed to clean it up a bit but it is great to play with some history.
The T-2000 is pretty hard to control - how are you doing with that?
Connors was a spectacular player. But Borg was a genius.

Connors won 109 singles titles, borg won 62 singles titles. Connors retains the no. 1 spot with mens total wins in the open era. Federer is no. 2
@@ag358there is no one with more titles at the age of 25 than Borg, the closest is Connors with 57, and without counting Borg WTT titles where he has 33.
@@Picus13 I posted no.1 singles atp in the open era, conners leads with 109. Borg had 66, i thought he had 62. If you count titles in both eras, rod laver leads with 198 with conners in second at 149, borg was 101. I didn't mention by age 25.
@@ag358 yes of course, Borg played at the open era, and at the age of 25 he won more titles than Connors at the same age, of course Connors won more and many others, but playing 20 year’s doesn’t mean that makes you the greatest, Rod Laver also played a lot of years, what I said is that at the age of 25 ( when Borg played his last year officially) and in a span of 9 years (the only years Borg played) there is no one with more titles than Borg, the closest is Jimmy Connors with 57.

Everything at its time. That fabolous players, with their perfect swim and their beatiful way of playing , top ten upon a time; today probably would lose with any actuallly top ten.

Borg and Connors. Both so good. Borg quit so young. I would say at 35 or so Connors was definitely better then Borg. Remember Borg’s attempted comeback. It did not work out regrettably. Connors was blasting away till he was 39. Both legends. Borg such a great athlete. Connors relentless technician.

If Connors had a stronger serve he would have won a lot more majors. His serve was consistent but not a real weapon

The rivalry that made the real golden era
There was one year when Connors was number one. He hit the ball so hard and with such precision that year he was probably the most undefeatable tennis player of all time. If his serve were as far ahead as his groundstrokes he would have been undeniably indestructible. Ilie Nastase had great talent and McEnroe had great hands but Connors was honed like a machine. When he was on no one could come close. His problem was statistics. No one can hit a ball that fast, that close to the net and that accurately to be consistent enough.
The most undefeatable player in one calendar year of all time is Vilas. He won 15 tournaments and I think 51 straight matches in 1977.
You really need to research connors a little more, he was ranked no.1 5 different years, was no.1 160 weeks, they didn't start til 75 so he actually had a lot more. He has won more matches than any male in thr open era, 1264-282 for a 82.4 win percentage. Only 2 men has won 5 us opens. He won the us ooen on 3 different surfaces, it was grass then clay, then hard court, remaining the only person to achieve this. Finally, he won 109 singles titles which he is no. 1. Borg won 62, McEnroe won 77 to put in perspective. Now that's consistent.

Nope. Federer and several others. Connors’s approach is almost always facilitated by Borg hitting a short forehand.
Those racquets are impossible to play with. Throw that in the equation of their greatness.

Used to play with the Dunlop maxply, the t 2000, connors played with felt like a hitting ball with a board.
no way, none Nadal plays the way he does with a woodie. Wish the pro tour would change to smaller racquets with standard strings ( prob. more important than the frames )I still on occasion play with a Wilson steel ( the 3000 model with brace )talk small 'sweet spot'... and a 3 rd gen Ashe head, the small midsize, I actually like that thou the top is dead -
Yeah..remember playing with the dunlop maxply, very stiff, however, had a tendency to crack on miss hitting overheads.
Thanks. Sorry to hear of his passing. In the early to late 1980's Nine network here broadcasted the US Open directly via CBS so we got to hear Mr Summerall a lot, not just Tennis but Golf too.
Pat was really warm and folksy - perfect foil to the more excitable Trabert.

Seen here: Borg used Bancroft (personal-Bjorn Borg) wooden racket; Jimmy used his vintage steel Wilson T2000. tennis in the hood boomed in 70s from these guys
Still have a Wilson T2000 with cover-always reminds me of the best.
So interesting that Borg was relatively unsuccessful in the States. Also one can hear the crazy tightness of his stringing. Apparently a strong would occasionally blow in his hotel room and it sounded like a gunshot!

The players today hit the ball much harder. Of course the rackets are far superior.
Today's racquet are super easy to maneuver and so much flexible in the hand. Sweet spot is much bigger and has so much 'give' to weak strokes. Back in that time the rackets were unforgiving. Incredibly difficult to hit the snap shots you see being made.
Rosco tanner was clocked several times while ge was ranked no. 4 in the world in 78, connors beat him 8 out of the 9 times they played.
@@ag358 Tanner's serve was extraordinary. He didn't get much topspin on his groundstrokes though, and could not hang with Jimmy Connors once a rally started. Connors did not use much spin either but his timing was usually outstanding and he took the ball on the rise.

Love this kind of slower, tactical tennis. Tennis should go back to wooden racquets or different kind of strings. Nowadays its nuclear bombardment with players bombing cruise missiles at each other.

I had no idea Boca West used to host a tournament.
It wasn’t exactly a tournament more of an exhibition. Just 4 players who had won grand slam tournaments. 2 semifinals and a final. $100,000 prize, big money for the time.

This match is honestly no different from modern play of tennis. Highly similar form of play
You gave your opinion of this era and video and everyone should respect it. Thankfully, tennis fans everywhere have different varieties of tastes.
I think today's tennis relies much more on power, and I find the 70's & 80's much more interesting than today
Borg was giving the ball alot of air. In cricket terms, we would refer to that as flight. Connors looked the better player in this match. Of course these are just highlights but....

With Borg's 80lbs of tension on has Donnay, it almost sounds like he's playing with a steel pipe.
Here, he's playing with his "Bancroft Borg" racket. In European tournaments he played with the Donnay, in American tournaments he played with the Bancroft.

Borg not getting a lot of depth with his groundstrokes at times here. Perhaps a sign of nerves, together with his uncharacteristic response to losing a key point here

I watched this in the day as a teenager. Connor was best at the net . Borg was the best baseline player.
Would have been interesting to see Borg play Nadal.

With Borg's incredible record on Euro clay (and Roland Garros), its so ironic that this is the only surface where Connors had a winning record vs. Borg (in ATP tourneys- Borg did win some in exhibitions). Borg totally dominated Jimmy on other surfaces, but never beat Jimmy on clay/HarTru in a tour event in his entire career. Not that Jimmy played a lot of Euro clay tournaments...but still, incredible fact. Borg did not do well on HarTru at all.
And who said Connors couldn't volley? Ok, McEnroe and Borg were better, but then those two were in a class by themselves.

Seeker22000 I don't think McEnroe was better than Connors he was only 6 and a half years younger. He might have had more talent but the records show Jimbo is definitely one of the greatest of all times. His bad luck was to play his best at the same time Borg played his...
Mcenroe was a better volleyer than Borg and Connors. Connors was probably a bit better than Borg. Especially as he got older and went to the net more often to shorten points. Also Seeker was talking about better volleyer not player.

I think Borg would have been way more effective had he strung his racket 25lbs looser than the 80 he used. He could have hit with way more spin and depth so more easier. Plus it probably would have added some mph to his serve.

match d'anthologie à wimbledon contre Jmc Enroe et finale complètement folle à flushing meadows contre Lendl.....il devient champion du monde 1982.
En 83 il aligne 10 jeux successifs à Lendl à NY en finale.....KO debout.
Respect total à Jimmy Connors.
Avec Mc Enroe et Gerulaitis ont avait la classe, le tempérament et le spectacle assurés.

Sad Hill KID KARSON même si Connors était un immense champion personne n'a été meilleur que Borg durant ces années et il a fallu attendre Federer et Nadal pour que ses records soient égalés ou battus et encore en précisant que Borg a arrêté de jouer en grand chelem à 25 ans ce qui n'est pas le cas des 2 autres ou de Jimbo d'ailleurs.
